Baby Boomers Special Edition
Redefining Retirement.3

(June 09, 2006)  Today's Special Edition Bugler contains another stack of stories about the impact Baby Boomers are having on the idea of age and retirement.

For whom the retirement bell tolls
A blue-ribbon study has found nearly one in two U.S. families will face a financially grim retirement because of a lack of savings.

The greatest pain will be faced by those born between 1965 and 1972 because they face diminished Social Security income and fewer of them have pensions, the Center for Retirement Research`s new retirement-risk index has found.

The center, part of Boston College, also said 43 percent of working households were in danger in 2004 of having too little income to fund their retirement, USA Today reported Wednesday.

'Unless Americans change their ways, many will struggle in retirement,' said Alicia H. Munnell, director of the study and a former member of the White House Council of Economic Advisors.

'There is no silver bullet. The answer is saving more and working longer.'
(Monsters And Critics)

Ebenezer Scrooge would have been happy. Doom, gloom and an Eeyore like pessimism seem to be the appropriate emotions. The retirement program is BS. Work and misery are all that there is to look forward to.

The fantasy scenarios are extraordinary. The streets full of pensioners who are functioning without Social Security or Medicare. Gen Y households full of Alzheimer's riddled 70 year olds who are going to live until 95. Euthanasia parlors (like the one in Soylent Green) dot the suburban landscape.

Oh, Lordy, it's grim stuff.

Well, there's no question that the Baby Dearth is going to cause some changes in the landscape. There's even less question that the future won't resemble the past. Dreams of a retirement that involves slowly molding into a grave while playing cribbage at a fishing retreat are probably a thing of the past (unless you want to live in one of these somewhere in West Kansas).

As usual, embracing reality is the key to prospering.

(We're reminded of something we saw in a new client's office that said, effectively, "It is only when we have the courage to face things exactly as they are that a light will develop by which the path can be seen.")

The truth is that life, post 50, will be an adventure for anyone who wishes it to be. It will be a hardship for anyone who wishes things were other than they are. We're getting more excited all of the time about the changes baby boomers are about to make.
