Webby
(May 30, 2006) This table shows the recent nominees and winners of the Webby Award in the Employment category.
If you're like us, your fist reaction was probably "Huh?"
As you can see from the table, the "competition" is all about the advertising industry. (It's not an accident that TalentZoo, good as it is, is in the Advertising/Marketing Recruiting Business) The Webbies are just another form of inside baseball in the old advertising industry.
Each of the sites in the nominee's class is a highly polished offering. They are all credits to the Online Recruiting Industry. But are they really the five best for 2005? It's as if Jobster, Recruiting.com, Simply Hired, Indeed and a host of others had never materialized. Perhaps it's the
atmosphere in New York City.
This is not to say that the Webby nominees and winners are not important contributions. It's just one view.
It would be nice if there were an unbias awards process within our world that recognized contributions. There are several extraordinary things going on these days and recognizing them is a critical part of moving the industry forward.
The grassroots Recruiting Blog Awards, organized by Jason Davis of Recruiting.com this year are a good model. Jason's goal was to strengthen the underlying community through collaboration and visibility. It was a solid contribution to the industry as we've seen in a dozen years.
We're thinking hard about the subject. If you've got a brainstorm to add to the mix, please let us know.
