Reveille and Hyperbole:
NAS Recruitment Communications, a recognized leader in the specialized field of human resource communications, announced today it has partnered with Talent Networks to deliver the new "Jobs2Web" Search Engine Optimization (SEO), ensuring its nearly 5,000 clients the latest in next-generation internet recruiting solutions. With more job seekers initiating searches on the main search engines such as Google and Yahoo, companies must ensure their jobs are optimized for search engine indexing in order to drive traffic directly back to their career sites. The new Jobs2Web service extracts and reconfigures a company's job content so it can be easily indexed and submitted to the major search engines. The result extends any company's online advertising strategy beyond job board advertising, allowing it to drive candidate traffic directly back to its jobs and career sites for application into its ATS systems.

Batman has one, so do Superman and Donald Trump.  This fall even the stars of Lost will have a set.  And any five year-old will tell you, if you don't have a six-inch tall replica in plastic, you're not legit.  Now, thanks to Yahoo! HotJobs the recruiting industry boasts its own line of recruiting all-stars. On the heels of last year's wildly successful launch of the Super Recruiter action figure, HotJobs is extending their product line and unveiling Captain Candidate, a fully-flexible, multitasking machine at the 2006 Society of Human Resource Management conference. Captain Candidate answers the call of the Super Recruiter on the first ring.  No job is too tough, and Captain Candidate plays well on any team. And, there's no need for lunch breaks; Captain Candidate draws nourishment directly from his/her computer monitor.

Softscape, the industry pioneer in people management technology, today announced that independent research firm Bersin & Associates has positioned the company as a global enterprise market leader in its new report, "Performance Management 2006: Market Trends, Best Practices, and Vendor Profiles." The report also highlights two of Softscape's innovative and integrated customer deployments, Seagate and LandAmerica.

Net-Temps, the leading online job destination exclusively for staffing companies, announced today another addition to its already extensive jobs distribution network. Jobs posted on Net-Temps are now cross-posted to the newly launched Google Base website. This addition continues to bring new levels of marketing power to Net-Temps' recruiter customers for whom job visibility and audience reach are critical. Developed by search engine giant, Google, users can post a wide variety of content for free and have it distributed across Google's network of sites including Google search, Froogle, and Google Local. The Net-Temps job posting network is comprised of industry-specific, national and local websites with employment sections, job listing services and career resources. Through its vast network, Net-Temps' ability to broadcast its jobs across the Internet ensures its customers continue to receive a diverse audience responding directly to their jobs.

Professionalassociates, part of GCG plc, today announced the accelerated U.S. launch of its online sourcing service that matches highly qualified independent consultants and interim managers with potential management consultancy and Fortune 500 employers. www.professionalassociates.com was launched in the UK in 2005 to meet the growing challenge faced by companies when sourcing highly skilled experts for specific projects and interim management roles, as well as help world-class consultants source roles that more precisely match their particular skill set. The service is free to qualified independent consultants.

Experience, Inc announced the national rollout of its alumni recruiting service, directly connecting corporate recruiters with more than 400,000 graduates of the world's top colleges and universities. The first company to offer the breadth of a nationwide alumni network, Experience links recruiters with a college-educated pool of active and passive candidates. Unlike active job seekers, passive candidates would consider a career move if the right opportunity came along, but aren't likely to post their resumes to online job boards. Until now, this made recruiting passive candidates a challenge. Building on its existing eProNet service that spanned 30+ schools, the Experience alumni network now includes alumni of all 3,800 schools that are part of the Experience network for college recruiting. Candidates from the country's top schools - including Stanford, MIT and Yale - are now able to use the same online service for their entire professional career, including internships, entry-level, mid-career and executive searches, all powered by Experience.

National PEO, LLC, a full-service human resource outsourcing company, has found their service offerings fit in perfectly with the needs of several vertical businesses, one of them being the construction/building and real estate industry. To date, National PEO has provided their services to several highly recognizable construction companies such as VeeMac Construction, Gary Day Construction and Major Builders based in Las Vegas, among many others. National PEO recently added recruiting to their service offerings, and have experienced tremendous response from the construction industry to help them fill positions ranging from on-site managers to laborers. National PEO offers their services in both English and Spanish to make the benefits process easier for those non-English speaking employees.

Australia:
Tripping over the wire tangle
Three dotcommers and only two chairs left. Whatever you do, don't stop the music yet.
THEY say two's company, three's a crowd. So it must be a rather awkward tango in the Perth CBD between iiNET, Amcom Telecommunications, and PowerTel. PowerTel's chief Paul Broad joined iiNet's board yesterday, just a few days after his company acquired a 10.5 per cent stake in the internet service provider via a capital raising. PowerTel is expected to finish up with a 15 per cent shareholding. Amcom, which has refused to comment on whether it will launch a takeover bid for iiNet, acquired more shares in its Perth neighbour this week to ensure its stake did not get diluted by the issue of new stock to PowerTel. Mango growers warn of labour shortage
Mango growers in the Northern Territory are warning of another labour shortage this harvest.  Growers have told a Senate inquiry this week that guest workers from the Pacific islands should be allowed into Australia to help fill shortfalls. Darwin grower Peter Delis says the inquiry told them no evidence of a labour shortage has been presented so far. (abcRural)

Canada:
Innovative solution could ease labour shortage
The local Boston Pizza is following in the footsteps of many other restaurants in Alberta and will be hiring foreign workers to help ease the stress of the labour shortage primarily caused by the oil and gas boom in Whitecourt and in many other areas of Alberta.  The restaurant will likely see the arrival of six professional cooks near the end of this month. Local Boston Pizza owner Clark Marcolin said the reason he is bringing in labour from offshore is that there just aren't enough local people available to fill the full-time positions - especially late shifts, when staff are required to close up for the day. Global:
US survey: More advertising dollars moving online
On Friday, the Newspaper Association of America released estimates that US newspaper advertising increased just 0.3 percent during the first three months of 2006, compared to a 35 percent jump in online advertising — numbers that came days after Merrill Lynch termed the state of the newspaper industry a "deep depressing dive." Maybe too strongly worded, but as newspaper analyst Colby Atwood told the New York Times, "The handwriting is kind of on the wall." "Increasing amounts of revenue and focus should be on the online properties," Atwood said. "This is a transition that's taking place over several years here. It's not happening overnight, but it's definitely happening." (Editorsweblog)

B-to-B Ad Effort Offers Food For Thought, Targets Pocketbook By Way Of Breadbasket
AT A TIME WHEN DEMAND for business-to-business media appears to be inching up, the business media industry is kicking off a big advertising push designed to raise its awareness on Madison Avenue. The effort being announced today by trade organization American Business Media, features a new ad campaign created by New York-based DiMassimo Inc., and focuses on the influential nature of B-to-B media outlets. Not surprisingly, the campaign is being placed in some B-to-B media outlets known to be influential on Madison Avenue, namely, the print editions of the advertising trade press, Chief Executive magazine, and The Wall Street Journal. The campaign, themed "Business Media. Devoured by the Influential," will also be featured on the websites of influential business publications such as Forbes.com and CFO.com.  (MediaPost)

Volvo Arrange World's Largest Competition for Workshop Personnel
The world's largest competition for workshop personnel is about to get underway. The organiser, Volvo Trucks, is hoping for at least 12,000 participants from all over the world. The goal is to raise the level of competence of the personnel as well as the status of working as a mechanic. A competition for workshops has existed in Sweden for 50 years, but it became global in 1977 and took on its current form and the name VISTA. Its purpose is to develop the competence of personnel working in the service workshops. The competition is decided through theoretical and practical exercises in which the participant' skill and knowledge of trucks and heavy engines are put to the test. Today's modern trucks contain a great deal of sophisticated electronics and systems that put significant demands on the service staff. Any problems must be corrected quickly in order to get the truck back in service. The competition is first decided on the national level in three theoretical rounds. Thereafter, the competitors go on to regional finals. (TNN)

Labour shortage threatens energy industry safety
Low investment in human capital in the energy industry has created a global shortage of skilled labour which poses a serious threat to safety, a major oil company chief told a gas conference on Wednesday. Petronas chief executive Hassan Marican told the World Gas Conference in Amsterdam that the energy industry had been ignoring the problem for too long. "Today we face global shortage (of skilled staff) in every part of the industry chain. I raise this issue not because it's increasing our costs but because I'm seriously concerned about the safety element," Marican said. (Reuters)

South Africa:
Turning the brain drain into brain circulation
Among the key reasons that highly skilled migrants are often reluctant to go home is that they fear losing the cultural, scientific or entrepreneurial environment necessary to maintain or enhance their skills base. Most foreign graduate students from developing countries fear that after their return they will be cut off from knowledge because of administrative hassles and restrictions on visa applications. The situation could be solved if recipient nations issued "permanent visas" to scientists and other skilled workers. In the Netherlands, for example, the director of the University of Maastricht has proposed awarding foreign graduates a permanent visa, allowing a voluntary "recirculation" - at a time of their choice - that both their country of origin and country of training could support rather than block. UK:
New website matches subbies to contractors
A new website aimed at matching subbies to main contractors will be launched in the next few days – in direct competition with another online service set up last year for the same purpose. Known as subconpages.com, the search engine will be launched initially only in south-west and central England. But the website's marketing manager, Michael Tate, told CJ: "We intend to go national very soon, but we can't register all the subbies who may be interested at once." (ContractJournal)

US:
Research shows impact of immigration on Utah
Since the recession that occurred after the deflation of the dot-com industry and the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, migrant workers have filled the worker gap Utahns created when they left in search of better jobs in neighboring states. Recently, experts have studied the economic ramifications of the migrant workers on both state and national levels in efforts to find solutions to the current immigration dilemma. "Undocumented people are here. Undocumented people are working," said Ken Jameson, a University of Utah professor of economics. "In point of fact, everybody has essentially welcomed immigrants and we have all taken advantage of that." Jameson said the two best examples of the economic benefit of undocumented workers in Utah are the tourism and agriculture industries. The turkey industry in particular simply would not be able to function without the immigrant workers. (BYUNewsNet)

Deep Release:
Retailers Battle for Talent with Compensation
Axiom Consulting Partners and Western Management Group release report on the practices and trends in compensation in the retail industry.

Retail jobs that have the greatest impact on sales and margins are commanding the largest pay increases. In an era of 3.0% base pay increases, the average annual wage has jumped 10% or more for jobs such as Sales Team Leader, Sales Supervisor and Senior Buyer. This surprising finding was gleaned from an analysis of Western Management Group's "Retail Sales Compensation Survey" results over the previous two years. The analysis, performed by Axiom Consulting Partners, also found that variable pay ("bonuses") has emerged as the new currency for rewarding performance at certain leading retailers.

Although challenging to use variable pay in retail jobs populated by teenagers working part-time and turning over every two months, there are many other critical jobs impacting store performance that are increasingly on a performance incentive system. "When implemented properly, variable incentives are powerful tools for providing focus on the things that matter and motivation to perform higher," said Peter LeBlanc, Managing Partner at Axiom Consulting Partners. Retailers are looking for cost-effective ways of recruiting, retaining and motivating talent and the study found that incentive pay is becoming an important reward.

Axiom Consulting Partners offers its "Retail Sales Compensation Survey Summary Report" in response to the increasing need for retailers to maximize the return on their compensation dollar. This report offers key insights for practitioners responsible for planning and advising senior management on compensation matters. The research report also features industry forecasts, data, trends and recommendations.

The "Retail Sales Compensation Survey Summary Report" findings from Western Management Group's survey of Fortune 1000 retailers include:

  • While base pay wages increased 3.0% overall, Sales Team Leaders and Supervisors jumped 13.7% in 2005 and the Senior Buyer benchmark went up 9.4%.
  • On average, only 40% of the participating companies reported using variable pay for the various retail jobs examined in the WMG survey.
  • Variable pay is a desirable option among customer-facing jobs where performance is more easily defined but harder to manage to a consistent standard

Download the Retail Sales Compensation Survey Summary Report"" for more about variable pay and trends in the retail industry for 2006 and beyond.
