It's an enormous array of operations who directly interface with candidates and potential candidates on a professional, interest or industry basis. The number of associations around the globe is easily 5 times this size.
That's 150,000 discrete associations. And, that's before you factor in local branch operations/chapters. We figure that there are easily 1,000,000 operating networks, with an association/chapter at their center. Minimum network size is about 20 while the maximum chapter sizes range into the thousands of members.
This is one alternative to the "six degrees" model of the universe that the referral systems and social software tools are trying to tap into. These networks are local, self-selected and self supporting. Reaching out through them involves subsidizing their operations and supporting their view of the world.
In this world, the closer you get to the local branch, the tighter the networks actually are, operationally. The closer to the local branch that you can target, the more likely you are to have precise local results. Associations tend to be old fashioned networks with physical manifestations.
