Reveille and Hyperbole:
HotGigs, the only On-Demand Staffing Exchange for both contract and full-time resources, today announced that it has secured a $5.3 million round of Series A financing from Updata Partners, a leading technology-focused venture capital firm based both in Virginia and New Jersey. This marks the first round of outside equity funding for HotGigs, a company that is rapidly gaining prominence for its powerful business-to-business Staffing Exchange and related Software as a Service (SaaS) offerings. HotGigs will use the funding to expand its management team; scale its employee base; develop new product/service offerings; and launch significant national sales, support and marketing efforts.

The New York Times Company announced  that in June 2006 advertising revenues for the Company's business units increased 0.7% and total Company revenues increased 1.2% compared with June 2005. "To date in July, print advertising has been challenging, especially in categories such as studio entertainment, automotive and corporate, where we are experiencing declines," said Janet L. Robinson, president and CEO. "At the same time, we continue to benefit from solid gains at our digital properties, particularly About.com."  Advertising revenues for The New York Times Media Group rose 1.5%. National advertising revenues increased as strength in banking, financial-B2B/insurance and telecommunications advertising offset softness in the studio entertainment, national automotive and hotel ad categories. Retail advertising revenues decreased due to weakness in department and fashion apparel store advertising. Classified advertising revenues declined as softness in automotive and help-wanted advertising offset solid gains in real estate advertising.

JobKite.com, a next-generation job site, today issued results from a nationwide employee survey that reveal nearly one in two Americans consider their boss to be the Devil. On the heels of the buzz surrounding "The Devil Wears Prada", JobKite surveyed more than 3,500 employees from all over the U.S. Of 418 responses, 231 said yes, they like their boss. 187 said no.

Eptiva, LLC, a provider of web-based human resources and recruiter tools is showcasing its on-demand HR solutions via a new look for its Job Hunter Pro website. On-demand or "virtual" solutions are applications accessed via the Internet: typically on a subscription basis. This solution-delivery model is increasingly popular because it is so cost-effective, requires no additional client infrastructure, and enables 24/7 access from virtually anywhere. The Job Hunter Pro Virtual Candidate Coaching solution is a good example. Independent recruiters and placement firms go to great lengths to source, screen, and refer qualified candidates. What is often missing is adequate coaching on a candidate's presentation and interviewing skills. There just isn't enough time for in-depth candidate coaching.

Questex Media Group announced the launch of Workforce Performance 2006, which will take place September 10-13 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The event will highlight performance strategies and solutions that improve business execution and maximize organizational performance. "The sophistication and maturation of software and services behind workforce performance – including advances in learning, training, performance and knowledge management technologies and services – give organizations the opportunity to align these disciplines and drive both individual and enterprise performance," said Suzanne Graf, event director for Workforce Performance 2006.

HireAbility(r), a leader in integrated recruiting software and services, and Position Manager(r), the premier Applicant Tracking System designed for hospitals and healthcare have joined to increase the number of job applicants through hospital career sites across the US.  Ever since Position Manager integrated HireAbility's ALEX(sm) automatic resume processor, new and existing healthcare clients have been converting higher percentages of their career website visitors into bona fide job applicants. The companies credit the improvements to the streamlined user experience and fast, easy application process, made possible by the integration.

WorldatWork, the association for human resources professionals focused on attracting, motivating and retaining employees, is holding its first European Total Rewards Conference from 26-27 October 2006 in Brussels. Among the speakers are world-renowned experts who have driven the human capital discussion to the top of the public agenda. The conference chairman is Xavier Baeten, director of the Executive Remuneration Research Centre and the Strategic Rewards Research Centre at Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School (Belgium). He is known for his expertise in executive remuneration, strategic reward management, employee benefits and stakeholder management.

San Diego continues to lead the U.S. in unduplicated online job ads and hit a new high in June, according to The Conference Board Help-Wanted OnLine Data Series(TM). Nationally, new unduplicated online job ads increased in June to 2,436,300. The June level was 81,800, or 3 percent above the previous month and followed an increase of 4 percent in May.

Furthermore, Boyden has established a service to allow surrounding Baltimore, Maryland businesses the opportunity to utilize their facility and video system on an as needed, as available basis. LifeSize Room is a high definition video communications product that delivers crystal clear video and high fidelity audio, allowing participants to create a real, true-to-life experience.

Recruiting costs have increased, efficiency has decreased and New Hire Quality measurement has climbed from 2% of participating organizations to 40%. In spite of these gains, job candidates are increasingly unhappy with recruiting and retention practices across the board. The Staffing Performance Report breaks out 13 industry specific reports containing the latest information to help organizations compare their performance data with their competitors. Hundreds of employees and job seekers also lent their experiences, positive and negative, to provide a fuller snapshot of surviving the work-a-day world. According to the report, 40% of organizations surveyed, measure New Hire Quality – a drastic improvement from seven years ago when less than 2% measured their performance. That number is expected to increase as quality remains the top priority for over half of organizations surveyed.

GettingHired announces the signing of its 200th employer pilot contract to their revolutionary job board site, GettingHired.com. Employers understand the inherent value in scientifically matching a job seeker's Behavioral Characteristics, prior Work Experience and Educational Background to their particular job opening requirements, and finding candidate's who's workplace personality is a match for their open positions and company culture. GettingHired's unique RightMatch(TM) Career Compatibility Assessment is utilized to scientifically match job seekers with open positions posted by employers, ensuring the right hire for both job seekers and employers. Furthermore, these candidates are automatically recommended to employers on a daily basis using the RightMatch Daily Notification(TM).

Quigo, a pioneer and leading provider of targeted, auction-based, pay-per-click advertising, today announced that Cox Newspapers, Inc., one of the nation's foremost newspaper publishers, will generate new revenue by deploying private label versions of Quigo's AdSonar platform across sites affiliated with its 17 daily and 25 non-daily papers, including news sites affiliated with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (www.ajc.com); Austin American-Statesman (www.Statesman.com); Dayton Daily News (www.daytondailynews.com); and The Palm Beach Post (www.PalmBeachPost.com).

With 60 as the new 40, 3.4 million baby boomers are beginning the countdown to retirement. Approximately four million baby-boom superwomen born between 1946-1950 are poised for retirement with their boom-generation husbands. In her new book, Retired with Husband: Superwoman's New Challenge (VanderWyk & Burnham, September 2006), Mary Louise Floyd, a retired educator, says that superwomen are the force that will lead the nation's largest generation into a redefinition of retirement, set the pace for future generations and add a new chapter to human history.

Near-Retirees' Skills? Priceless
Adapting to New Threats with Integrated Message Management
The massive exodus of baby boomers doesn't represent a mere changing of the guard. Both younger IT workers and seasoned executives can ride a tidal wave of opportunity, as long as they think strategically. Seasoned IT workers will be able to leverage their experience big time. One way to do that is to broker a deal around the crafting of an extensive exit report or interview, notes Yang Lee, associate professor of information, operations and analysis at Northeastern University in Boston. Departing baby boomers will hold all the cards as corporate officials scramble for information, Lee explains. They'll be asking questions like these: "Do you know where the information is? Do you know how I should do such and such? How did workers do this when you were here?" she says. (computerworld)

Technical skills offer way in to finance
Technical skills and experience of large projects are the key requirements for breaking into financial services for people who lack knowledge of the sector, say employers and recruiters. Tim Walker, a partner in Deloitte's technology practice, said, "What is transferable is heavyweight project management skills and roles that are technically focused. Outside those areas it gets very difficult." (ComputerWeekly)

Go Ahead, Let Them See You Sweat
Sometimes you've got to sweat a little to get what you want at work.
Consider this: A member of Deloitte and Touche LLC's tennis league told team captain Marc Crockette that her opportunity to work abroad is a direct result of playing on the team. She was hitting ground strokes before a match with one of the firm's partners recently and casually mentioned that she'd love to work abroad. He told her that a two-year position recently opened in the company's London office and voila! She had an interview. Joining your company's athletic teams can enhance your physique and your career. How? The boundaries between cubicles and corner offices disappear on a court, field or pitch. If you work at a large- or even medium-sized company, you'll probably meet people you otherwise wouldn't even nod at on the elevator. "Company partners and people in the mailroom play together," says Crockette an auditor of employee benefit plans at Deloitte . "Your title is left behind the moment you leave the office." (Forbes)

Web Analytics Hiring: Where to Begin
Now that you are serious about Web analytics and are looking to make it more of an initiative (rather than 25 percent of someone's job responsibilities) how do you find the help you need? When we talk to new or prospective Web analytics clients, we often hear stories of how disappointed they are with the performance of the people they've chosen to lead their analytics initiative. There seems to be a major disconnect between the analytics roles companies need to fill and the skill sets available in the current workforce. As director of analytics for an interactive agency, I face this in trying to grow my team every day. What skill sets best serve our clients? What type of people do I need? Who can solve problems our clients and prospects face every day? (ClickZ)

Net Startups Nab Funding
HotGigs has received a $5.3-million first round of financing from Updata Partners.
The Minneapolis-based company, formed in 2003, runs a "staffing exchange" that, unlike most jobs sites, lets companies advertise to candidates for free. It requires staffing firms and independent contractors to pay to get access to job listings. HotGigs adds a layer of social networking for the job seekers involved, allowing users to build out profiles and connections. It follows a portfolio company of Mr. Beim's called TheLadders, which does the same thing for $100K-plus salaried positions. (RedHerring)

Jobster Relaunches as MySpace for Jobs
Jobster relaunched on Wednesday, adding more social features to the mix. The site is now an open social network similar to MySpace or Friendster - it allows you to create a profile page, tag yourself, list the companies you've worked for and answer questions on your work-related experiences. You can also add "faves" (coworkers and collegues you admire or would like to make contact with) and see who has favorited you in the "fans" section. Additionally, you can explore the site based on tags and add tags to describe other users. So how does this integrate with Jobster's job search? Well, searching for a job still gives you the standard listings, email alerts and RSS feeds, but you can also skip across to the social network to see what the employees of those companies really think about them. You might even want to get in touch with a few key employees, just like on LinkedIn. The aim is to give a more human face to the companies you're researching: what do they discuss around the water cooler? What are the lunches like? At least, that's the theory. The question is: will you really be honest about your company if you know the whole world is watching? I'm not so sure. (mashable)

Jobster launches a brand new interface
Over the last couple of days Jobster has released a brand new interface and in the process redefined job search, tags and social networking all at once. The only thing missing is freshly brewed coffee, which you need so you can take the time to understand what they have done!

UK:
Our people are our biggest (secret) asset
Most companies that claim to value their people don't know what they're worth, and those that do know don't tell anyone.  Human capital management is a phrase that brings many HR professionals out in a rash. But while it might be painful jargon, failing to measure the value of your people is no longer an option. The trouble is, no-one seems to be sure exactly how to do it effectively - even the most senior HR directors. Rob Lake, head of corporate engagement at Henderson Global Investors, works with companies on corporate governance and reporting. He has been interviewing group HR directors at FTSE 100 companies to find out what they do and how they measure their effectiveness. (Personnel Today)

Deep Release:
Flexibility Ranks First, Entrepreneurship Last, When Baby Boomers and Active Retirees Seek Retirement Jobs, According to New Survey from RetirementJobs.com
Online Retirement Job Destination Releases What's In, What's Out List

According to a new survey released by RetirementJobs.com, entrepreneurship ranked at the bottom of a list of key job factors baby boomers and active retirees consider for an ideal retirement job.  Flexibility or lifestyle integration were ranked as important by 7 out of 10 respondents asked to rate the job factors in describing their ideal retirement job.  Just 30% rated entrepreneurship as being important.

"We found that 50+ job seekers place a big premium on flexible work conditions, to the point where they will often trade a suitable schedule for reduced compensation," said Tim Driver, CEO of RetirementJobs.com.  "It probably stands to reason that if someone is after a more relaxing lifestyle, starting a business is not always likely to be a fit.

But let's not forget there are countless examples of great ventures started by people over age 50."

RetirementJobs.com research shows that on top of experience, workers over 50 stay in jobs longer, waste less time at work, and relate better to companies' older customer base.  Employers are increasingly luring 50+ workers given that half the U.S. workforce of 130 million people is scheduled to retire, or take a retirement job, in the next 15 years.
Job Factor Percent of Respondents Rating Factor Important
Flexibility or Lifestyle Integration (partial day, week or year) 69%
Security and Stability 67%
Independence and Autonomy 65%
Service and Dedication 58%
Cash Compensation 53%
Technical and Functional 53%
Managerial 48%
Benefits 48%
Pure Challenge 46%
Entrepreneurship 29%

Follow up interviews with respondents enabled RetirementJobs.com's analysts to identify a qualitative set of likes and dislikes among people in their careers after age 50.  To view the "What's In, What's Out" list, please visit the URL below:

What is a Retirement Job ?

Survey Methodology
RetirementJobs.com conducted in-depth research relating to visitors' definition of an ideal retirement job. It was followed by interviews with a representative sample of respondents.  RetirementJobs.com visitors generally learn about the site through search engines queries, syndicated partner sites, press mentions, and word of mouth.  Data was analyzed by RetirementJobs.com's team of Certified Compensation Professionals.
