Reveille and Hyperbole:
Localcents.com announced the beta release of their new online service, providing a free venue for community members to post, search for and view classified ads. In addition, the site can be used to download and print out coupons offered by local merchants. Localcents.com seeks to involve communities and improve access to local information. Rather than restricting its reach to major cities, Localcents takes a more organic approach to online classifieds. Ads can be posted at any zip code in the United States. Entering a starting location will automatically pull together everything within a 30-mile radius. Based on the results, those who are searching can then choose to reduce or expand that radius to fit their needs.

What is the link between employee wellness and on-the-job performance? That's one of the questions reporter Cait Murphy of Fortune Magazine asked herself as she participated in the energy management training for executives at the Human Performance Institute in Orlando, FL. Murphy's independent report, titled "The CEO Workout," appears in the July 10, 2006 edition of Fortune. Murphy spent two-and-one-half days immersed in this mind-body approach to energy balancing, during which she reports a number of perspective-shifting insights: Stress is good, eat every two or three hours, incorporate rituals for rest and recovery, and, for optimal performance, manage energy, not time.

Kronos(R) Incorporated (KRON), a leading provider of software and services that empower organizations worldwide to effectively manage their workforce, and Unicru, Inc., a leading provider of talent management solutions, announced a definitive agreement for Kronos to acquire privately held Unicru. Under the terms of the agreement, Kronos will pay approximately $150 million in cash for Unicru. Acquiring Unicru marks a significant milestone in the execution of Kronos' strategy to broaden its offerings in human capital management. Kronos believes that the combination of Unicru's expertise in selecting and hiring the highest quality people with Kronos' expertise in deploying and managing the workforce will enable customers, for the first time, to integrate employee selection strategy with actual labor performance and tie labor planning to sourcing and hiring. The acquisition is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Kronos' Fiscal 2006, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. The deal will be financed with a combination of existing cash and debt.

ResumePostOffice has created a resume distribution portal that allows employers and recruiters to find leading professionals from all industries for free. Job boards and Internet recruitment sites can also profit from ResumePostOffice's resume distribution services by joining an affiliate program, which allows them to earn 20 percent per sale for each job seeker that uses the resume distribution service.

Australia:
Australia's Employment Increases 52,000 in June (Update6)
Australian employment rose the most in two years, prompting economists to bring forward their forecasts for a central bank rate increase to next month. Bonds slumped. Employment climbed 52,000, five times more than economists expected, after a revised 47,700 increase in May, the Bureau of Statistics said today in Sydney. The jobless rate remained at 4.9 percent. Competition for workers among construction companies and mine operators has driven record wage increases in an economy in its 15th year of expansion. The Reserve Bank of Australia will raise its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point to 6 percent in August, according to 20 of 23 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News after the report.  (Bloomberg)

Outsourcing Industry To See Gains: Analyst

Restructuring in the outsourcing industry will benefit companies that specialize in offshoring, business processing and high-end consulting, according to a Thursday report by Banc of America Securities. "Deflationary pressure continues to force the industry to restructure around low-cost delivery methods, improved automation and increased use of standardized elements," said Abhishek Gami, the author of the report and a Banc of America analyst. "Companies with mature capabilities in offshore service delivery, business process outsourcing and high-end consulting should continue to benefit." (Forbes)

Citizen Participation and Technology
OhmyNews International Citizen Reporters' Forum: Session 1  Citizen Participation and Technology / OhmyTV  After Dan Gillmor's invigorating keynote, Amit Asaravaia of Techsoup.org introduced the speakers for Session One: Citizen Participation and Technology. They are: Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist.org, J.D. Lasica, founder of Ourmedia.org and Bryan Nunez, Technology Manager of Witness.org. And as Amit reminded the audience, it's not about the technology but about designing the future.
Craig Newmark
Craig believes that their approach is a very simple one -- and simple is good. Call it Web 0.1 rather than 2.0! Craigslist is primarily a classified ads and discussion board. Yes, it helps people but he personally believes that what's also important is the work being doing for international citizen reporting. Citizen reports help add power to speech. India:
India's outsourcing market to face challenge New Delhi, July 13,
India's domination in the outsourcing market may be challenged as emerging destinations gain prominence with firms seeking access to skills, predominantly non-English languages, that are lacking in existing locations. "India leads the offshore delivery landscape, accounting for over half the agent positions in the first generation offshore locations (India, Philippines, Canada and Ireland), a UNI report said here. However, other "emerging destinations" are likely to gain prominence as firms "seek access to skills, predominantly non-English languages, that are lacking in the existing locations," a market intelligence report of the National Association for Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) said today. Already, several India-based companies have begun to build scale in these new locations, the report added. ( IRNA )

Infosys to strengthen its workforce
Hyderabad : Keeping in lines with the guidance of hiring 25,000 people in FY07, Infosys Technologies has added 8,097 employees during the first quarter. It has also announced a hike in salaries for the freshers from the next fiscal. (andhracafe)

South Korea:
Employment Growth Slows for Second Month in June

The rate of employment growth in Korea slowed for a second straight month in June. The National Statistical Office reports 255,000 new jobs were created in June compared to the same month last year. That is the smallest monthly increase so far this year. Also, the average monthly gain during the first half stood at 307,000 falling short of the government target of 320,000. Finance officials blame the disappointing results on a slowdown in the construction sector and expect conditions to improve in the second half.  (Arirang News)

UK:
IT outsourcing boom is over
The boom in companies outsourcing their IT is over, a U.S study has claimed, with organisations now much more likely to think more carefully and strategically before they rush operations overseas. The study by management consulting firm DiamondCluster International found that while the majority of organisations remained committed to increasing their IT purchasing, numbers overall had decline significantly from previous years. "The outsourcing market is maturing in fundamental ways," said Tom Weakland, who leads the outsourcing advisory services practice at DiamondCluster. (Management Issues)

US:
Signs of the times

In the age of Monster.com and other online job listings, it seems so old-fashioned to see a simple "Help Wanted" sign posted in a shop window. But the notices, or their contemporary equivalent - large, vinyl "Now Hiring" signs outside a business, or reader board messages - are popping up all over town. They may be an indicator of a stronger economy and stiffer competition for workers. "The unemployment rate has been relatively low for the past several months," said Brian Rooney, a labor economist with the state Employment Department. "We're hearing anecdotally from employers that there is more competition for workers." Employers say the signs are just one of the methods they use to recruit employees. Many say they also place job listings on the Web, run classified ads in the newspaper and request referrals from the state Employment Department. (The Register-Guard)

Upstate employers face worker shortage when boomers retire
An exodus of retiring baby boomers from the work force over the next several years means places like schools and hospitals will be hanging out help-wanted signs. But with a coinciding flight of 20- and 30-somethings from upstate, getting enough people to answer may be a challenge, according to a report released Wednesday by the Buffalo branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Roughly half a million upstate workers are projected to retire between 2000 and 2010, and nearly 800,000 more will stop working between 2010 and 2020. That means that even a region that has seen little job growth in recent years will experience a demand for new workers. Nearly 20 percent of managers and 19.2 percent of community services workers are expected to retire by 2012, while about 13.5 percent of health care employees will stop working upstate, according to the report by economist Richard Deitz. Deep Release:
Labor Department Presents Third Recognition of Excellence Honors; Recipients Showcased at Workforce Innovations 2006
Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco presented the third annual Recognition of Excellence (ROE) honors in Anaheim this week at Workforce Innovations 2006. These honors recognize talent development programs from around the nation that have achieved outstanding success. This year's five awardees come from Sacramento, Calif.; Decatur, Ga.; Albuquerque, N.M.; Circleville, Ohio; and Washington, D.C.

"Recognition of Excellence honorees are proof of the workforce system's capacity to develop new and innovative approaches for preparing workers to compete in the global economy," said DeRocco. "Every year, ROE honorees offer examples of education and job training programs that meet the needs of local and regional economies and can be replicated throughout the country."

The Employment and Training Administration (ETA) presents ROE honors in five categories. The "Educating America's 21st Century Workforce" category recognizes innovative and effective strategies to prepare workers for the challenges that require higher skills and more education.

Honorees in the "Building an Industry/Business-Driven Workforce Investment System" category respond to the needs of business, while preparing a skilled workforce for continued job growth.

"Recognizing the Demographics of the Workforce," the third category, highlights organizations that effectively address the critical need to find ways to integrate every available worker into the labor force. Honorees in this category provide effective services to individuals with disabilities, those with limited English proficiency, homeless individuals, migrant farm workers and others.

The "Serving Out-of-School Youth" category recognizes innovative techniques and collaboration with businesses, industry and essential partners in workforce and economic development to solve the education, training and hiring challenges of preparing out-of-school youth and young adults.

The final category, "e3 Partnerships," recognizes the value of projects that demonstrate sustained partnerships among employers, educators and economic development leaders, a practice ETA calls the "Power of e3."
