Third Annual Web 2.0 Conference
The Web 2.0 Conference focuses on emerging business and technology developments that utilize the Web as a platform and defines how the Web will drive
business in the future. But within the chaos of disruption lies the seeds of opportunity. We'll focus on the startups and
financiers tending those seeds, of course - including the second annual Launch Pad. But we'll also highlight how the incumbents are also taking advantage of disruption, or, at the very least, how they are responding to it so as to protect their market positions.

Gates to hand Microsoft to Ozzie in Web 2.0 charge
Bill Gates will end a 33-year reign at Microsoft Corp in 2008 and hand over the software reins to new chief software architect Ray Ozzie, the man who last November slammed the company for almost missing the software as a service boat. Two years from now, Gates will put an end to his day-to-day duties at
Microsoft, in order to donate more of his time to his charity, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, he said yesterday. He will remain chairman. (Computer Business Review Online)
Netscape, AOL Look to Crush the Web 2.0 Out of Digg, Reddit
Netscape, which is run by America Online (AOL) these days, has launched a massive new revamp (which can be found here while it runs in beta) of an effort that shifts this once traditional online news portal to an interactive and vote-based "Web 2.0" interface that has been dubbed by many as a potential "Digg-killer."
Essentially, this is the classic story of a massive company moving into the space where a small one is thriving through force of innovation and verve. And the big question, of course, is: will the e-Walmart crush the very soul from the Web 2.0-Mom and Pop Shop? (Blogcritics)
Your Teachers May Be Conspiring Via Podcast
Technology allows professors to trade lectures, assignments.
While many college students turn up their iPods as a diversion from homework, an increasing number are turning to their MP3 players to complete their assignments as academic podcasting continues to expand its scope. Now professors aren't just uploading lectures-to-go, they are seeking out new ways to use the
technology to connect with students and share their work with other educators. Schools such as the University of Florida and Vanderbilt University have adopted news-based podcasts so that students can remain informed despite their hectic schedules. Ohio University provides a podcast tour of the university
library. And while some universities are wading in the podcasting pool, others have already taken the plunge by integrating iPods directly into lessons. (MTV)

Edge Online is reprinting an article from last month's issue of the British gaming magazine. In the article, Bug Hunt, they look at the role of the modern QA tester. While once a good way to make yourself known to the company's HR staff, it's more and more simply a summer gig between classes for college
students. They also discuss the hard working conditions, soul-crushing scheduling, and the public misconception that what a QA tester does involves the word 'play'. (Games.slashdot)

Times' Web Ad Revenues Surges 27%
ONLINE AD REVENUES AT THE New York Times Co. last month soared 26.9 percent from May of 2005, while ad revenues at the company overall grew 4.4 percent--the highest increase so far this year. The company's Web presence has been bolstered significantly by the acquisition of About.com, which helped yield a
total of 39 million unique visitors for all its Web properties last month, according to Nielsen//NetRatings. About.com has enjoyed an expansive 59 percent year-over-year growth in ad revenue, in large part because of an increase in cost-per-click advertising, as well as increased demand for display ads. Seniors Are The Future
In the current debate over social security there is
an assumption that the senior
population of the future will be much like the senior population of today as viewed by the youth of today: Senescent, poverty stricken, interested primarily in dowdy clothing, denture creams, TV re-runs and Florida
condos. The more catastrophic minded economists and health care professionals imagine a night of the living dead, with millions of Alzheimer's patients wandering the streets, helpless and penniless, because Social Security failed them. Business and political leaders appear to have little grasp of what is
actually happening in America and among other Western nations as their populations age. Without the wave of illegal and legal immigration that started in the 1970s, the U.S. population would soon shrink. Whatever path this economy takes, we must recognize that the issue of aging is a permanent problem.
Deep Release:
Most Professionals in High-Level Positions Believe Taking Risks Is More Important Than Playing it Safe
In a recent survey of over 630 working professionals conducted by Caliper, a Princeton-based human resources consulting firm, over 7 out of 10 people feel that taking risks is more important to success than avoiding mistakes.
In addition, people in high-level positions—those who are C-level and Vice Presidents—stressed the importance of taking risks much stronger than those in Administrative or Managerial positions.
Does these mean that if you want to move your career forward, you are better off trying something new, and possibly failing, then never trying at all?
Herb Greenberg, Ph.D., President and CEO of Caliper, shares, "Many top achievers are risk takers—they are simply not afraid to go out into uncharted waters. As a result, they move themselves, as well as their organizations, ahead."
This theme is explored in much greater depth in Caliper's new book, Succeed on Your Own Terms, which is being published by McGraw-Hill in June. The message is that people who are truly successful are willing to take risks. And willing to risk is only one of four qualities that top achievers
had in common. The other three qualities these people shared are really loving what they do, self-awareness and the ability to focus on their strengths instead of their weaknesses.
Authors Herb Greenberg and Patrick Sweeney discovered that these are the qualities that drive more than four dozen remarkably talented individuals from a dozen countries who have made their marks in business, politics, sports, the arts and global affairs. Through their compelling stories,
readers will learn to identify their defining qualities, develop their own definitions of success, and learn to recognize their defining moments.
As a bonus, readers also receive a free personality assessment to help them focus on their most powerful personal motivators and capitalize on their key strengths.
