Read all about it - your digital daily paper
Way of the future: New and improved iterations of this e-paper may become a familiar morning sight on trains and trams. THE newspapers of the future - cheap digital screens that can be rolled up and stuffed into a back pocket - have been just around the corner for the last three decades. But as early as this
year, the future may finally arrive. Some of the world's top newspapers publishers are planning to introduce a form of electronic newspaper that will allow users to download entire editions from the web on to reflective digital screens said to be easier on the eyes than light-emitting laptop or mobile phone
displays. (The Australian)

LABOUR SUPPLY THREATENED BY HIV/AIDS, MEETING TOLD
By 2010, Sub-Saharan Africa's total labour force is expected to have shrunk by 9 per cent due to HIV/AIDS, a meeting in Ghana heard last week. Labour losses may top 20 per cent in the worst affected countries. By 2015 the losses could reach up to 12 per cent overall, reducing the labour supply by as much
30-40 per cent in the highest prevalence countries. Over one hundred representatives from the public and private sectors concluded a two-day policy dialogue workshop Friday in Accra on the impact of HIV/AIDS in the workplace. (UNECA)

Online Newspaper Readers Younger, Buy More
People who read newspapers online buy more products online, a new study from the Newspaper Association of America found. Eighty-two percent of "power users" purchase products online compared with only 55% of individuals who don't frequent newspaper Web sites. The study conducted by MORI Research on
behalf of the NAA surveyed 1,501 Internet users by phone as well as 9,576 online newspaper users via an online "pop-up" survey on 10 newspaper Web sites. "Power users" are defined as readers who visit Web sites on an average day. The mean age of a power user is 39 compared with 42 for non-users. Forty percent
are between the ages of 18 and 34. Fifty-two percent hold college degrees versus 35% of non-users. (Editor and Publisher) CMO Tenure Dwindles to 23 months
The average tenure of a CMO has shrunk even further, according to a new survey from Spencer Stuart, down from a sobering 23.6 months in 2004 and 23.5 months last year to an even tighter 23.2 months this year, AdAge reports. There's no easy answer to why the window of opportunity slams so fast for the
CMO. But marketing executives believe that while the pressure to perform is exacerbated by the short-term demands of Wall Street, they are also hindered by lack of access to CEOs. A CMO Council study from last year found that top marketing executives admited that poor performance has led to a lack of
influence within the corporate hierarchy. Only 10 percent of respondents to the CMO Council survey said their marketing groups are "highly influential and strategic" within the company. Less than half said their teams are "well regarded and respected," even though two-thirds of CEOs polled in a separate
survey by Chief Executive magazine said their marketing groups are "mission critical" for creating top-line growth. (MediaBuyerPlanner)

CFOs Expect More Hiring During Third Quarter
Chief financial officers (CFOs) anticipate increased hiring activity in accounting and finance in the third quarter, according to the most recent Robert Half International Hiring Index. resulting in a net increase of 4 percent, up 3 points over the second-quarter forecast. (AccountingWEB.com)
Downloading newspaper to hand-held not too far off
Newspaper readers, the future is nearer than you think. Some publishers plan to introduce electronic editions this year. The Houston Chronicle will be among the first to experiment with paperless newspapers. Cheap digital screens that can be rolled up and stuffed into a back pocket will allow users to
download entire editions from the Web. These reflective digital screens reportedly will be easier on the eyes than are light-emitting laptop or cellphone displays. (San Angelos Standard)
Series planned on aging workforce
The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce Workplace Excellence Committee has prepared a three-part series on the aging workforce. It will explore changes in workforce demographics, including impending Baby Boomer retirements and a shrinking pool of younger workers that will lead to pronounced shortages of
labor, knowledge and skill in a growing number of industry sectors. Such changes likely will force businesses to reinvent the way they manage workers and preserve critical knowledge and skills. The series begins July 13 with a session on demographics, trends and challenges. Additional sessions will be held
Sept. 14 and Oct. 19. Cost for July 13 session is $35 for members; $45 for non-members. It will run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the East Bank Club, 500 N. Kingsbury St. (Chicago Tribune)
Deep Release:
Nearly One in Five Companies Allows Pets in the Workplace According to New Survey
Leading up to Take Your Dog to Work Day, The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association Releases Results of New Survey Showing Number and Benefits of Pets at Work
Are the dog days of summer going corporate? With Pet Sitters
International's annual Take Your Dog to Work Day approaching on June 23, many people might be wondering just how many pets are actually in American workplaces. Well, according to an all-new survey conducted by The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), there are more than
you might think.
According to this national poll of working Americans 18 years of age and over, nearly one in five U.S. companies allows pets at work. And a majority of those polled believe there are benefits to having pets at work, such as relieving stress, improving relationships with co-workers,
making for a happier workforce and creating a happier work environment.
According to the survey:
- 55 million Americans believe having pets in the workplace leads to a more creative environment
- 53 million believe having pets in the workplace decreases absenteeism
- 50 million believe having pets in the workplace helps co-workers get along better
- 38 million believe having pets in the workplace creates a more productive work environment
- 32 million believe having pets in the workplace decreases smoking in the workplace
- 37 million believe having pets in the workplace helps improve the relationship between managers and their employees
- And 46 million people who bring their pets to the workplace work longer hours!
"More and more we are starting to see the benefits of pets as they transcend the role they play at home into other non-traditional areas such as places of work," said APPMA President Bob Vetere. "This survey solidifies what most of us already know: Americans can't seem to get enough of
their pets."
The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) is the leading not-for-profit trade association serving the interests of the pet products industry since 1958. APPMA membership includes more than 900 pet product manufacturers, their representatives, importers and livestock
suppliers representing both large corporations and growing business enterprises. APPMA's mission is to promote, develop and advance pet ownership and the pet product industry and to provide the services necessary to help its members prosper. Visit
