Demographic crisis looming for aging Canadian population
The federal government must reduce the amount of personal income tax Canadians pay in order to keep workers here and stave off a demographic crisis that could devastate the country's economy, a newly released Senate report urges. ''The time to act is now, and actions must be implemented on a priority basis,'' says a report from the Senate banking committee titled The Demographic Time Bomb. (Canada.com)

Scientific Diaspora Could Ease Brain Drain
Many expatriate scientists and medical professionals who work in Canada want to contribute their skills to their native developing countries -- all that is lacking are mechanisms to help them do so without permanently returning to their country of origin, reports a study to appear Friday in Science magazine. For many years, industrialised countries have been attracting scientists, engineers, information technology experts and talented university students from poorer countries in what's called "a global brain drain". "The brain drain is a very big problem for developing countries. In sub-Saharan African countries, the majority of medical doctors have left," said report co-author Abdallah Daar, director of ethics and policy at the R. Samuel McLaughlin Centre for Molecular Medicine at the University of Toronto. (IPSNews)

Israel:

Engineering skills shortage 'real'
South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) president Viv Crone has warned that the country could be in danger of becoming a technology backwater if it doesn't address key engineering skills shortages urgently and use a multi-pronged approach.
Although there seems to be divergent views around whether this shortage exists or not, Crone believes that it does and is serious. (Fin24)

Opportunities surface from skills shortage
The shortage of skilled workers in the industry plays right into our hands," says precision water-jet cutting and profiling company Aquajet director Gavin Courtis. "Jobs that previously required intricate milling and grinding can be quickly handled with the use of our products and the traditional machine-shop artisans can often be by-passed." Supplying the security, chemical, transport, architecture and aerospace markets with abrasive water-jet cutting equipment, Aquajet is the largest company of its type in Africa. US:
Newspapers fight back against online classifieds
For the past decade, newspapers have seen their help-wanted advertising under siege from online rivals. Now, as the Internet begins to eat into automotive and real estate classifieds as well, newspapers are fighting back. Classified advertising accounts for more than a third of revenue at newspapers, which until recently didn't want to accept that advertisers are increasing their spending on the Web, which is better suited to connecting individuals and delivering up-to-the-minute information. Deep Release:
Social Networking Sites Continue to Attract Record Numbers as MySpace.com Surpasses 50 Million U.S. Visitors in May

comScore Media Metrix  released its monthly analysis of consumer activity at top online properties and categories. In addition to shopping for Moms and Grads, checking out job sites, and staying on top of personal finance and politics in May, Americans also flocked to their favorite TV show and sports sites, including those focused on the World Cup and NBA playoff games. The social networking phenomenon also continued its stratospheric ascent, as MySpace.com reached new heights with 50 million visitors in May and YouTube.com nearly doubled its traffic from April, reaching 12.6 million visitors.

"The popularity of social networking is not expected to wane in the near future," said Peter Daboll, president and CEO of comScore Media Metrix. "This is a phenomenon we're seeing not only in the U.S., but also around the world. The challenge for social networking sites will now be monetization and how advertisers will respond to the global marketing potential of these sites."
