IHRIM and Knowledge Infusion announced the results of their 2006 Talent Management Survey. The results revealed that an overwhelming majority of companies cite Talent Management initiatives -- including performance and learning management, succession planning, recruiting, and competencies -- as an explosive interest within their organizations for the next three years. Survey respondents are from IHRIM's 3,000 members and Knowledge Infusion's comprehensive customer base, primarily in HR management. The reasons cited for the increase in the importance of talent management initiatives included recognition of the essential link across training, knowledge and performance, the looming talent shortage and the realization that internal redeployments can often be more effective than external recruiting.

Jobster Inc. announced today that it continued to extend its leadership position by signing contracts with more than 115 new companies in the first quarter of 2006, bringing the total to more than 250 employers actively using Jobster's subscription-based recruitment targeting service. Australia:
Teens finding McJobs online
GENERATION Y don't even have to leave their bedrooms to apply for a job at McDonald's since the fast-food giant launched an e-recruitment platform in March. Out with the old: As it's 50th year draws to an end, McDonald's is embracing technology, putting its rosters and application forms online Gone too is the paper-based induction into the world of Ronald McDonald and having to write down shift times on a loose piece of paper. From this year, staff at McDonald's 740 Australian restaurants will also be able to access their payslips online, and next year more e-learning modules will be added to the online platform. Resources industry staffing problems expected to worsen
Finding and retaining staff is one of the biggest issues facing Australia's booming resources industry, according to a new study. The People at Work report, published by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy, says the issue is only going to get worse. Author Bernard Salt says the problem in hanging onto staff has a lot to do with different values between the generations. (ABC Rural)

China:
Staff hiring: Passion is key!
While the international hotel giants battle to expand their empires in China and mull over branding and marketing strategies, there is something critical they can never ignore - staff. "Talents are given priority in Marriott, their potential, loyalty, interest and team spirit matters," says J. Willard Marriott, the founder of US-based Marriott International. "Take good care of your associates and they will take good care of customers, who will then return." (China Daily)

Global:
Doom and Demography
For decades, the world has been haunted by ominous and recurrent reports of impending demographic doom. In 1968, Paul Ehrlich's neo-Malthusian manifesto, The Population Bomb, predicted mass starvation in the 1970s and '80s. The Limits to Growth, published by the global think tank Club of Rome in 1972, portrayed a computer-model apocalypse of overpopulation. The demographic doom-saying in authoritative and influential circles has steadily continued: from the Carter administration's grim Global 2000 study in 1980 to the 1992 vision of eco-disaster in Al Gore's Earth in the Balance to practically any recent publication or pronouncement by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Google's Orkut Captivates Brazillians
Ask Internet users in the United States what they think of Orkut, the two-year-old social networking service owned by Google, and you may get a blank stare. But pronounce it "or-COO-tchie," as they do in Portuguese, and watch faces light up. "We were just talking about it!" said Suellen Monteiro, approached by a reporter while she was chatting with friends at a bar here in Rio. The topic was the guy whom 18-year-old Aline Makray had met over the weekend at a Brazilian funk dance, who had since found her on Orkut and asked her to join his network. (IHT)

Job search evolving on Web
Q I'm in a good job now, but, at 37, I see a new generation of competitors over my shoulder — clinging to their iPods and instant-messaging each other all day — and I'm wondering about a new generation of technology in the job market. In job hunting, what must I know to upgrade as the world moves on? — W.V.P.
A Think back to when, a dozen years or so ago, some of your co-workers were amazed — or disbelieving — that people like me were insisting the Internet had made it possible to put one's resume in the hands of employers all over the country ... instantly!  (Telegram.com)

The old software model dies here
There's no doubt that the enterprise software landscape is shifting. The question is, how far and how fast? I think it's happening faster than most people think, even those who are looking to the future. In the past week, there have been three fascinating examples of how the new model of enterprise software is already racing ahead of the old model. This future vision is not vaporware; it's available now.  While today's incumbents dither over how to transition to new licensing models as they slowly migrate to more collaborative services architectures, tomorrow's leaders are forging ahead to set completely new parameters for simplicity, control, ease of use and flexibility in the next generation of enterprise software. In Demand: Employment Agencies for 50-Plus
WHEN Verizon Communications decided to close down Douglas S. Burch's department, nudging him into early retirement after 27 years on the job, he had no complaints. "I decided to take the money and run," said Mr. Burch, 54, a software designer. He renovated his home in Alexandria, Va. But after two years, he said, "I was getting bored." One night as he was flipping channels, he saw an ad for Senior Employment Resources, a placement service in Annandale, Va., that specializes in jobs for older workers. He made an appointment, filled out a form and 19 days later began a new career handling insurance claims. (NYT)

BPOs giving the best shot on Hire St
High attrition rates and talent shortage in the BPO space have led to innovation in HR policies. In a bid to attract the creme de la creme of the talent pool, India's leading BPOs are spending crores on recruitment campaigns and are hiring specialised ad agencies to conceptualise and design them. Not only this, call centres are banking on call centres to hire people. Some of them have set up dedicated call centres within their offices to hire candidates. WNS, a Mumbai-based BPO, rolled out a glossy ad campaign, which cost the company around Rs 4-5 crore. Conceptualised and designed by Blackslate, the ad brought WNS a whopping 30,000 job applications. Satyam scouting for women at senior levels
"It is a little awkward if you don't have a single woman leader, particularly when the customer might have 4-5 women in their group."
The good news on the gender front is that companies like Satyam Computer are actively seeking to recruit women at senior or leadership levels. The company has 19 per cent of women in its workforce of around 28,000; "but at the leadership level this percentage comes down to 7 per cent", Mr A.S. Murty, Director and Senior Vice-President, Human Resources, Satyam Computer Services, told Business Line. (The Hindu)

UK:
Jobs website hits new heights
AN authoritative new survey has revealed that fish4jobs, the recruitment website that's part owned by the Bishop's Stortford Citizen, attracts more jobseekers than any other online job's site in the UK with over 1.6 million people visiting per month. The NORAS 2006 survey (National Online Recruitment Audience Survey) also shows that fish4jobs is attracting more and more users from all walks of life and job types. (Citizen)

US:
Jobs grow, but no worker shortage
Colorado may be near its all-time job peak, but most hiring managers won't begin to feel the pinch of a tightening labor market for at least another year, if at all, local economists say. Even then, don't expect a return to the heady days of the late 1990s and early 2000s, when job-hopping was rampant and employers forked out hefty salaries and perks to attract workers. (MSNBC)

Agriculture Workers and Farmers Eager for New Immigration Reform
The federal immigration legislation that has fueled nationwide protests, but stalled in the Senate yesterday is getting mixed reviews from South Valley's immigrant community, who worry about what their future may hold. Local farmers, however, see the seeds of a solution to an ongoing labor shortage in some of the proposals. (HollisterFreeLance)

Confidence Slips Among Accounting and Finance Professionals
Worker confidence among accounting and finance professionals slipped 4.2 points, to 108.8, during March, according to the Hudson Employment Index. The dip in confidence reflects the fact that nearly a quarter (24 percent) expect their employers to lay off staff in the coming months. Despite this, confidence remains higher than the 107.2 level of a year ago. (AccountingWEB.com)

Hugh Hewitt comes out of the Amnesty closet
Hugh Hewitt has publicly embraced his inner elitist and called for an amnesty for illegal aliens, in so many words last Friday: ...if you look at the "compromise" that collapsed today, it said begin the process of exploring the initiation of a potential fence sort of stuff. Why not just do what the House said, mark the 700 miles, and say we'll make the amnesty effective the day the 700 miles are finished?Hewitt's hardly surprising remarks came during a radio interview with WaPo columnist Charles Krauthammer, after years of denying he was in favor of amnesty, and denying that President Bush was in favor of amnesty. Hugh's been spending a lot of time recently promoting his new book, "Painting the Map Red," in which he warns of a potential GOP civil war over immigration, and that such a rift might cost the Republicans their majorities in Congress in the 2006 mid-term elections. (RedState)

Vietnam:
Vietnam's IT sector sees labor shortage
Vietnam's information technology ( IT) industry is coping with shortage of qualified software engineers, local newspaper Vietnam News reported Monday. Nearly two-thirds of local software companies are short of skilled employees, partly because local IT training establishments have failed to churn out qualified graduates, and firms in the country have offered lower salaries than those abroad. Deep Release:
Some Views of Hiring:

Some varying impressions of the current job market:

■ CareerBuilder.com says 31 percent of hiring managers expect to increase their staffs in the second quarter, 12 percent expect staff cuts, and the rest expect no change. Demand is strongest for health care, sales, information technology, retail and accounting/finance workers, that online job site says.

■ Monster.com asked hiring managers about plans to hire 2006 college graduates, and 72 percent said they planned some hiring, compared with 64 percent last year. The sales sector seeks the most entry-level workers, with jobs also offered in administrative and support services, customer service and retail call centers, retail, wholesale, advertising and marketing.

■ The Hudson employment index slipped a bit in March, as 32 percent of workers surveyed, compared with 33 percent in February, said they expected their organizations to add employees. Seventeen percent of the respondents expected their firms to lay off workers.

■ SnagAJob.com says summer jobs will be plentiful but won't pay much. A poll of national restaurant and service company chains revealed optimistic hiring plans, but the employers said they expected to have more than enough applicants, so there won't be any upward pressure on wages.

■ At the high end of the job scale, ExecuNet.com said 80 percent of executive recruiters are confident that executive hiring will continue to improve over the next six months. They're expecting 27 percent more executive search assignments during that time than in the previous six months.
