Canada:
Temporary Foreign Workers Face Tight Restrictions
Faced with a red-hot construction market and tight domestic supplies of skilled labour, one option is for Canadian employers to look abroad for temporary foreign workers to fill positions. "The intent of the federal government's foreign worker program is to assist employers in finding the workers they need when the supply of available Canadians to do that work is exhausted," says Mark Zeliger, regional manager of the foreign worker program for Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Outsourcing HR Reaps Benefits for Small Business
According to the Small Business Administration, small business owners spend between seven and 25 percent of their time handling employee-related paperwork. Not the most productive use of their time. But by outsourcing some or all of their employee-related functions — such as payroll, benefits, healthcare or recruitment and retention — small business owners can focus on what they do best. And in the process they can improve productivity and even save some money. (smallbusinesscomputing)

Firms told to spread their search engine bets
Users still click on the most prominent search results, but they are beginning to look beyond Google  New research has highlighted the importance of search engine optimisation (SEO) and paid search-engine links for firms looking to boost their online presence. Online marketing agency Harvest Digital found that nearly half of all internet users spend a third of their time spent online searching, and 43 percent of users are likely to click on links because they are on the first page of results. The issue of free classifieds puzzles publishers
The issue of free classifieds won't go away any time soon. It's a tremendous challenge for publishers, because they're used to getting paid for the ads they run. But Google, Microsoft and many other companies – including Craigslist, the site that's not really a business – don't plan to get paid for the classified ads they carry. At least not directly. And that makes every traditional classified advertising publisher crazy. Publishers have to adapt to the new business rules while still keeping the old business going and growing. (OnRec)

Most Brits 'want immigration limits'
MORE than three quarters of Britons want to see an annual limit on immigration, a survey said today. The poll for right-wing immigration think-tank Migrationwatch said 69% of people also feared Britain was losing its own culture. Asked if there should be an annual limit on foreigners coming to the UK, 50% strongly agreed and 26% agreed. Only 4% strongly disagreed and 6% disagreed, with the rest not expressing a view. US:
Web brightens local newspaper landscape
As major daily newspapers watch circulation and ad revenues erode, some publishers are finding the Internet a bigger reader magnet than others. In the Chicago market, the suburban Daily Herald's Web site enjoyed the largest percentage jump in the region, attracting an additional 16%, or 128,704 readers, to a print weekly readership base of 789,930, according to data released Monday by the Newspaper Assn. of America. The Web had an especially bracing effect on readership in a demographic not known for buying newspapers: 25 to 34 year olds. The Arlington Heights-based Herald reached 103,642 readers in that age range with its newspaper alone, while its Web site expanded the Herald's reach among the 25-to-34 set to 151,612 – a 46.3% boost that's the second-highest percentage increase in the nation.  (Crain's)

Newspapers look for new ways to reach readers
The local delivery boy's job is safe - for now. But as consumers' reading habits rapidly evolve, newspapers are looking beyond the front doorstep for the best places to deliver the news. Free single copies, richer online content and more niche publications are a few ways newspapers are working to reverse a gradual readership slide, according to circulation executives gathered Monday at the Newspaper Association of America's annual meeting. Paid newspaper circulation has been declining for years as papers cut costs and readers - especially young adults - turn to the Internet for news. (BellevueNewsDemocrat)

US: Baby Boomer Retirement Dilemna
Baby Boomers Seek Solutions For The Problem Of Their Lack Of Financial Planning. The saving rates for Americans is at it is lowest point since the Great Depression. With retirement near, baby boomers are seeking an alternative to retiring in poverty or working to age 75. It is expected that 78 million Americans will retire in the next twenty years. But, a lack of savings and poor financial planning have created a baby boomers retirement dilemma. With so little saved up, experts believe these retirees will have to either depend on social security, which is a sad bet for retirement given the state of the finances of the federal government or postpone their retirement until age 75. Major worker shortage forecast for Maine
MCCS and similar academic institutions are expected to fill only about one-third of the state's work force needs through 2012, forcing businesses to import employees from other states, hire people who aren't qualified, or lure staff away from other companies, said Jim McGowan of the community college system's Center for Career Development.  (BangorDailyNews)

Replacing the Undocumented Work Force
Read the full report (PDF)
Perhaps no aspect of the debate over immigration policy is more hotly contested than the impact illegal immigrants have on the U.S. economy. With more than 7.5 million undocumented immigrants currently employed in rapidly growing sectors of the economy, understanding the effect of immigration on the labor market is critically important for policymakers grappling with immigration reform. Black population declines in New York City
Preliminary census estimates show New York City is experiencing a decline in its black population for the first time since the Civil War. An accelerating exodus of U.S.-born blacks coupled with a slight decrease in birthrates and a slowing influx of Caribbean and African immigrants are responsible for the drop, The New York Times reported Monday. Deep Release:
Business Owners Are Looking To PEO Companies For Human Resource Solutions
Solve Your Human Resource Problems With A PEO

Let's look at the real profit picture.

In today's competitive market, only the smart leader sees profit margins climbing. He/she realizes that one of the largest expenditures (which must be constantly addressed) is balanced and cost-effective staffing. The successful leader realizes that a PEO provides a competitive edge.

A PEO arrangement is not a totally new concept. It has been tried and proven by some of today's leaders and most profitable companies. It can help to stabilize your costs and insulate you from unexpected increases, which can send your profit margins tumbling.

The PEO industry can be referred to by many different names; PEO (professional employer organization), employee leasing, staff leasing or human resource outsourcing companies just to name a few. These types of companies will handle many of the day to day tasks that can rob you and your staff of it's valuable time, which could be redirected towards growing your business.

Services offered by most PEO companies are as follows;

1. Payroll Calculation and Processing
2. Employee Health Benefits And Administration (Health, Dental, Vision And Retirement)
3. Provide Workers' Compensation And Administration
4. Provide Unemployment Compensation And Administration
5. Provide all the proper forms so that you are sure your employees are in compliance with all Local, State and Federal laws

The best part about the PEO arrangement is that the business owner writes one check per payroll to cover all employee related expenses. Furthermore, since the PEO becomes the employer of record the PEO is responsible for all Unemployment and Workers' Compensation Claims and court appearances further reducing wasted time.

A PEO arrangement is not for every business owner, but for the majority a PEO is a viable solution to save money while freeing time to grow their business.

You can save time looking for a PEO in your area by visiting http://www.planmarc.com. PML is a company dedicated to educating business owners about the benefits of a PEO (professional employer organization) and to helping business owners find a PEO that best fits their needs.
