Reveille and Hyperbole
Bernard Hodes Group, a leading provider of integrated talent solutions, released SmartPost, their award-winning job posting and sourcing intelligence system. SmartPost solves two major problems commonly
found today in recruiting: posting to the right job boards for the specific hiring need, and understanding the results of an online sourcing campaign to better recruit in the future. SmartPost addresses both problems head-on in an easy-to-use, time-saving format.
Human Resources suppliers are spending up to 10 percent of their annual revenue on marketing efforts, but that outreach is rooted in traditional activities that fail to deliver the sales leads that executives seek. That's a key finding of "Trends in HR Marketing," the first in a
series of research reports by HRmarketer.com, the no. 1 marketing and media visibility service for companies
selling to HR decision makers and employee benefit brokers.
A business directory, the Y, and a foodservice distributor may not appear to have much in common. But now they do. They've just made a strategic commitment to improving employee performance, and can expect better corporate performance as a result. YellowPages.com, the YMCA of Los Angeles, and Performance Food
Group (PFG) recently selected MindSolve Technologies, Inc. as their Employee Performance Management software-as-a-service provider.
Customer satisfaction, benchmarking, and online reporting are the focus of three chapters contributed by Valtera experts in the recently released book, "Getting Action from Organizational Surveys: New Concepts, Methods and Applications." The book, edited by Allen I. Kraut, contains a collection of innovative
research in the field of organizational surveys written by industry thought leaders.

Products and services can be located by zip code or city and within a radius starting at 25 miles. The listings are integrated with Microsoft MSN's satellite-image-based Windows Live Local, so users can view maps and aerial imagery of places were listings are located, officials said this week.

Australia:
Workforce to top 10 million
AUSTRALIAN job seekers are riding the coattails of the Asia-Pacific region's growth and this should be the year the nation's workforce tops 10 million. As the economy has grown, so has employment. The country added just shy of 1 million new jobs in the five years to last year. (CourierMail)
Newspaper job ads 'at three-year low'
The latest ANZ job ads survey shows the number of ads in Australia's major metropolitan newspapers fell by a seasonally adjusted two per cent in February to an average of 19,972 per week. This follows a 0.9 per cent decline in January and marks the lowest monthly number of job ads since April 2003. (FairfaxDigital)
Employers embrace web to advertise jobs
THE number of jobs advertised on the internet has hit a record high, as more employers embrace the web to find staff, a new survey shows. The outcome shows the employment market remains strong across most sectors and hints at a wages push by workers. The Olivier Internet Job Index rose 5.59 per
cent last month, seasonally adjusted, with more than 200,000 jobs counted on average each week on the major jobs websites. The gain adds to the 6.06 per cent rise in January and marked a solid start to the year. (BorderMail)
China:
Too Many Job Options Can Cause Decision Paralysis
One of the nice things about using online hiring systems is that you have metrics, or measurements, that tell you what is going on. When these hiring performance metrics go wrong you can dig deeper, identify the problem and change the process. Then the numbers go back up. (Talent

Social Networks Don't Have a Business Model
Social networking sites need to offer real-world benefits (not just online social benefits) to keep people coming back. Social networks don't have a business model. At least that's what an article in Businessweek says:
...as the sites multiply and investors take a closer look, questions abound concerning whether social networking makes for a wise investment. And skepticism is rising over the long-term financial health of these online destinations, with some analysts saying these are the early stages of a
social-network bubble. "We have yet to see a viable long-term business model for social networks," says Nate Elliott, an analyst at Jupiter Research. "We have yet to see anyone come close." (Publish)
WAN Paris Report: Newspaper Revenues Online
My speech last week for Borrell Associates to the World Association of Newspapers Advertising Conference in Paris received good play in The Guardian of London, MarketWatch in the U.S., PaidContent.org, and from WAN itself. Yet, most of the news stories focused on a comparison I made between the relative
values of print edition readers and online edition readers. That was a good 'take-out' quote for those stories to use. However, I made that comparison towards the end of my speech just to show the newspaper advertising executives that they must greatly increase their online revenues, particularly if their
readerships continue shifting from print to online. (Corante)
Trends in the Accounting Workforce
The results of A Decade of Changes in the Accounting Profession: Workforce trends and Human Capital Practices, released in February, indicate that women are increasingly attaining leadership positions in public accounting firms and that both men and women are taking advantage of the alternative career paths
offered by an increasing number of firms. The Study was conducted under the aegis of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' (AICPA's) Work/Life and Women's Initiatives Executive Committee and more than 2,600 CPAs took part in the research. (AccountingWEB.com)
Newspapers needn't fear Craigslist Ad site's founder sees bright journalism future - on Web
Craigslist.org founder Craig Newmark said he thinks the impact his free classified ad site has had on newspaper revenues has been exaggerated. The Internet is bursting at the seams with blogs and forms of community-driven content such as the mostly free online classified advertising site Craigslist. The
social and financial implications of these fast-growing online communities will be tackled at the South by Southwest Interactive Conference in Austin, Texas, Friday through March 14. The conference is a lovefest for self-described uber-geeks and others involved in blogging, Web design, online community
networks and other Internet-related communications. The Rocky Mountain News last week talked with Craigslist founder Craig Newmark about his business and its impact on traditional media in advance of his appearance at the Austin interactive conference. (Rocky

The Myth of a Linux Talent Shortage. Is it true? You tell us.
Last fall I wrote an article entitled "Critical Shortage of Linux Talent Slowing Adoption". I composed a parody, a spoof about the ignorance of human resource management. I wrote: Most human resource people believe Linux is an air conditioner company. They get confused between the term Linux and Lennox. So,
HR recruiters define their job profiles like this:
Linux programmer needed by enterprise. Skills required:
REFRIGERANT METERING DEVICE CALIBRATION
LEAK TESTING
LIQUID & SUCTION LINE SERVICE VALVES KNOWLEDGE
START-UP
CHARGING FOR TXV SYSTEMS
Five to ten years of relevant training and master plumbers' license required. Will accept equivalent for H1B applicants. Microsoft Certifications a plus.

India:
‘A good resume can give you the best RoI'
Online hiring is a big game now. And almost all the e-recruitment firms claim that, at any given point of time, they are sitting on over a lakh of resumes. What with corporate India on a hiring spree, and sectors like retail, telecom and information technology constantly sprucing head count, business is
booming. Pegged at Rs 150 crore, the e-recruitment business is expected to double to Rs 350 crore in two years. DNA Money speaks to N Muralidharan, managing director of the Malaysia-based JobStreet.com India. (DNAIndia)

Massey University launches nurse workforce on-line study
Massey University has launched an international online survey for nurses, which aims to address the chronic shortage in the health workforce. The World Health Organisation says the health workforce is in crisis with a chronic global shortage of health workers. Unions in New Zealand estimate the workforce is
about 2,000 nurses short. Survey project director, Annette Huntington, says all nurses will be asked to take part in the survey when they apply for a renewal of their practicing certificate. (RadioNewZealand)

18,000 online job seekers reveal their tactics
The results of the UK's largest online recruitment survey are published today, providing a detailed snapshot of how Britain's 11 million job seekers tackle finding a job. The National Online Recruitment Audience Survey (NORAS) 2006 results are gathered from 18,724 people – the biggest sample to date. Key
statistics to emerge show the average online job seeker:
· is 34 years old
· has 13 years' work experience
· earns £34,000
· visits over five sites when actively job-hunting
The majority, 64 per cent, are looking for a full-time permanent position, with 27 per cent seeking temporary work and 21 per cent searching for a part-time job. Seventy-nine per cent applied for work electronically, with 43 per cent emailing their CV to an employer and 28 per cent completing an online
application form. Just six per cent put a hard-copy CV in the post. Search engines were the main route for people finding a particular recruitment website (35 per cent), followed by links from another website (20 per cent). (OnRec)

Military recruiter's Craiglslist ad promised no Iraq duty
An Oregon National Guard recruiter is in hot water after posting an ad on the popular Web site 'craigslist' promising recruits they would not have to serve overseas if they signed up. The ad, which has since been deleted, was posted in the Portland section of craigslist and read "our unit is deployed, so you
will not have to serve overseas." (KATU2)

Student helps to create online network
Fed up with the limitations of Internet sites such as Myspace and Friendster, USF student Charles Trippy and a team of young entrepreneurs decided to create their own social networking site called Eekline.com. Eekline is about a month old and has more than 5,700 members.
It provides free accounts and features such as customizable profiles, options for local bands and businesses as well as blogging capabilities. (USFOracle)
Graduate gets job through online source

Building a workforce, one apprentice at a time
Josh Charlie, 23, of Hoquiam is in the appreticeship program for the Local 317 Carpenter's Union. He is helping to put up the frame for a wall for Grays Harbor College's new instructional building. Tethered high from a safety harness and some rope, Hoquiamite Josh Charlie could well be mistaken for a trapeze
artist. Charlie, who completed the carpentry program at Grays Harbor College three years ago, is now putting his classroom skills to the test. He's one of several apprentices working on the new instructional building at the college under a new state law that requires state public works construction sites to
employ a minimum number of apprentices. (DailyWorld)

Survey Sez:
Survey: Accounting Workers' Confidence Falling
A quarterly employment report from staffing company Spherion Corp. finds that more accounting and finance workers are pessimistic about the economy and their ability to find a new job.
The report's Accounting and Finance Employee Confidence Index, a measure of confidence among accounting and finance workers in the United States, decreased to 61.9 during the period between November 2005 and January 2006, compared to 63.8 during the previous quarter, according to a recent survey by
Spherion. Most of the workers saying that they were pessimistic about the economy and their ability to find a new job had originally been neutral on the economy's and their own prospects.
Workers remained confident in their job security, however, with 78 percent believing their jobs would not be eliminated in the next year.
Despite the drop in the overall confidence index, accounting and finance workers are more likely than the overall U.S. workforce to believe the job market and economy are improving and to have confidence in the future of their employer and in their ability to find a new job.
"In our recruiting business, we continue to see high demand for all types of accounting and finance workers across the country, especially those that have experience working with large public accounting firms," said Spherion Professional Services vice president Brendan Courtney, in a statement. "We don't
see this trend cooling anytime soon, as the need for skilled workers continues and the talent pool shrinks."
The Accounting and Finance Employment Report is based on data Harris Interactive gained from an online sample of 8,805 employed adults, 425 of whom work in accounting or finance positions and were interviewed in a series of polls.
