You Should Know
Canada:
Aging boomers to slow growth, study says As people retire, workforce shrinks
Canadians need to brace for a major restructuring and slowdown in the country's economy a decade from now, according to research by economic forecasters at Global Insight (Canada) Inc.  The aging of Canada's population means the most the economy can expect to grow in any given year will be less than a measly 2 per cent, they predict. For now, Canada's economic growth potential is about 3 per cent a year -- the most the economy can grow without overheating and causing inflationary pressure. (Globe and Mail)

Googlemania hits Waterloo
Internet search giant Google Inc., whose plans for expansion in Canada have been a closely guarded secret over the past year, offered a brief glimpse of its strategy yesterday as it attempted to woo several hundred computer science grads.  After buying Waterloo-based Reqwireless, a firm that makes e-mail software for wireless devices, Google will likely look to acquire more Canadian companies that fit with its aspirations to expand its operations into the southern Ontario tech hot spot. (Globe and Mail)

Turning the brain drain into the brain gain
Jason Brogan knows all about the brain drain. After graduating from the University of New Brunswick, the Minto-raised software engineer moved to Boston to get his career on track. "I moved out of necessity because I wanted to start my career," said Brogan, who went to work for Polaroid's research and development department in Waltham, Mass. "It was good to leave as a life experience "... I worked with brilliant scientists from around the world." But after five years in the eastern hub, the call of home lured him back. (CanadaEast)

65 means freedom to start a whole new career
A growing number of Canadians are looking at working past retirement age, some to start a new business or pursue a dream job. For a growing number of well-established Canadians, "the retirement dream" involves work -- and not just hobby jobs but substantial second careers.  At 68, Canada's new ambassador to the United States, Michael Wilson has been far too busy to even contemplate the prospect of traditional retirement -- although he did schedule a ski vacation before taking up his new duties in Washington, D.C., this week. (Globe and Mail)

Finland:
Finance Ministry predicts improved employment, healthy growth this year
The Ministry of Finance is predicting a good year ahead for Finland, with GDP growing at a rate of 3.7 percent.
The ministry's cyclical report, which was issued on Tuesday, predicted that the growth rate might be even faster in the early part of the year, slowing down in the second half. All indicators are seen to point in the right direction: in addition to healthy, and broad-based economic growth, the international situation is good, thousands more jobs are being created, state finances are in surplus, and the state debt is declining.
With tax cuts adding to consumer demand, the stage is set for a very good economic year for Finland.  Employment is set to improve at the same rapid rate. Last year's figure of 50,000 new jobs is not expected to be duplicated, but job growth is nevertheless expected to reach 30,000 - an increase of 1.4 percent. Combined with last year's 50,000 new jobs, the employment level should rise to nearly 69 percent. At the same time, the unemployment rate is expected to fall to below eight percent.  Structural unemployment nevertheless remains a problem, and job creation appears to be very structural and regional. The paper and electronics industries are shedding jobs, sending many people to the unemployment lines. In other areas, at shipyards and in the metals industry, for instance, there is a slight labour shortage, which is expected to get worse.  The trend is likely to slow down in 2007, but the government's goal of 100,000 new jobs during the current parliamentary term appears to be close to becoming a reality. Ghana:
Brain Drain Hits Military... all its branches have been affected
The Ghana Armed Forces says the string of resignations that have hit the service is not limited to the Air Force.  Officials at the military command say other units of the service are also suffering from the brain drain.  A report carried by the Enquirer newspaper on Monday says officers of the Air Force who benefit from expensive training programmes in the United States of America and elsewhere quit the service for greener pastures thereafter. Global:
What Have You Done For Me Lately? Trade associations strive to provide a worthy organization for members to value
When that yearly invoice for membership dues lands on a distributor, manufacturer or rep's desk, a trade association's future is in the balance. The member looks at the invoice and considers whether it is worth it for them to continue their membership. It is this moment where association executives wish they could be mind readers. What is going on in that member's head? What aspects of the association would they consider worthy of their dues, and which would not? Looking at the future of trade associations, members and association executives know that the associations will continue to be a presence in their respective industries for a long time. As stated, the concern for association management is that they must continue to provide a valuable and active service for their members. With a shaky economical climate, they find that more stress is placed on the association's value to the members. Those members, in looking at their dues invoice, parallel a "What have you done for me lately?" attitude. (Industrial Distribution)

15 million classifieds, no waiting
Vast.com, another all-in-one search engine for classified advertising, launched Wednesday. Founded by Raval Navikant, Vast.com offers 15 million listings scraped from 50,000 Web sites, according to the site. But, tongue in cheek, Vast.com also says: "Vast is built and kept up-to-date by an army of a billion highly trained monkeys." Vast may be big, but it's not complete or even attractive. Its design barely deserves the word "sparse." What sets the spider-built-site apart is its invitation to Web developers to freely steal its secrets. Visitors are invited to "steal" Vast's entire data set. "You can rebuild all of Vast.com, if you'd like, offer targeted classified search results to your users; build visualizations or mappings; or process the data to find interesting correlations," a posting says. Rockstar fights brain drain
$25 million to some staff ROCKSTAR'S parent company has shelled out more than $25 million in stock incentives to keep some of the company's brightest and best working with the outfit. Take-Two fears that Rockstar will suffer a brain drain if they don't pay a lot of money to keep the current staff in place. (Inquirer)

Background Checks That Never End
A new security outfit takes a close look at potential hires, and then keeps on looking  Popular online grocery company Fresh Direct, which delivers provisions to armies of apartment-dwelling New Yorkers, suffered a troubling blow in late 2004. One of its drivers was charged with, and later pled guilty to, stalking and harassing female customers. The background investigation that Fresh Direct's screening firm had performed on the employee hadn't revealed previous misdemeanor and felony convictions on the driver's record. (Businessweek)

Blogger Firings Down, Hirings Up?
Have you noticed that it's been awhile since we last heard about a company firing an employee blogger?  The Technorati and Indeed.com data appears to back this hypothesis up. My gut is that there has been a decrease in blogger firings because a) the ensuing publicity is terrible, b) more companies have a tolerance for bloggers and c) they may be hiring bloggers instead. I don't feel it necessarily reflects that more organizations have blog policies in place - although they should. (WebProNews)

This finding was one of a number of insights revealed in the third annual "Employee Rewards Watch", a study of 468 UK firms. US:
 'Brain drain' alarm overblown
The "brain drain" isn't as prevalent as previously assumed, according to a study of about 1,800 young, college-educated Mainers. Released Tuesday by the Finance Authority of Maine, the survey of college graduates found that about half of the respondents chose to remain in Maine or to return here to live and work and that more than half who graduated from an out-of-state college returned. Also, half of all 18-year-olds who attended college outside the state ended up transferring to a Maine institution to complete their degree and half of the state's "best and brightest" students attended college in Maine. "Overall, 75 percent of the graduates in 1997, 1998 and 1999 ended up earning their degree from a Maine institution," said David Silvernail of the University of Southern Maine's Center for Education Policy, Applied Research and Evaluation, which conducted the survey. DOD pushes ahead with HR reforms
The Department of Defense officials say they are moving ahead with a planned human resources overhaul, despite a courtroom setback. The Pentagon will place 11,000 non-union employees into a new pay structure in late April. But a legal ruling over the labor relations portion of the proposed reforms is till blocking efforts to extend the human resources changes to employees represented by unions, GovExec.com reported this week. Over 2000 professionals from around Southern California came together March 9, 2006 for Orange County's Largest Mixer III at the Orange County Fair and Exposition Center in Costa Mesa, CA."It was an amazing event. MapInfo Uncovers Baby Boomer Demographics and Lifestyles Traits;

From Retirement Locations to Ethnic Backgrounds to Wealth Status, MapInfo Uncovers Fascinating Insights into One of the Country's Most Influential Demographic Groups

MapInfo Corporation (NASDAQ: MAPS), the leading global provider of location intelligence solutions, today released demographic insights into Baby Boomers, an influential demographic group that is watching its first members turn 60 this year. Composed of people born between 1946 and 1964, this group is a critical target for many retailers' marketing campaigns. MapInfo has delivered the following insights into who they are:

-- Leaving Behind the Empty Nest--While historically retirees stay put, Boomers are known for setting new trends. MapInfo demographers analyzed the Census Bureau's American Community Survey to find out where Boomers were moving. Moves to Southern and Western states are predominant but some larger states, like several in the Northeast (New York and Pennsylvania) and Midwest (Illinois), are also Boomer magnets. The following list identifies the top ten destination states, and the number of state-to-state migrants aged 42-60:
    1 Florida 139,372
    2 California 100,081
    3 Texas 65,477
    4 Arizona 56,913
    5 Virginia 42,838
    6 Pennsylvania 36,194
    7 New York 34,835
    8 New Jersey 31,036
    9 Illinois 31,000
   10 Georgia 30,390

-- The Times They are a-Boomin'--Baby Boomers are entering the stage of life where differences in wealth and income begin to magnify. According to the latest Federal Reserve Board study, average household net worth (assets minus liabilities) rose nearly 30 percent for leading-edge Baby Boomers between 2001 and 2004. That was the fastest wealth gain across all age groups.

-- Ethnicity and Diversity --These "aging hipsters" come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Fully 11 percent of Boomers are Hispanic or Latino. Among non-Hispanic Boomers, 11.4 percent are African American, 4.4 percent are Asian, Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and 1.7 percent represent all other races including those of two or more races. White, non-Hispanics represent 71.6 percent of all Boomers.

"Baby Boomers are the largest generation in American history, and their shifting lifestyle choices make them one of the most compelling demographic segments to research," said Sebastien Rancourt, PSYTE Advantage product manager for MapInfo. "While these data points are interesting to the average American, they are particularly important for marketers who realize understanding the values, cultural perspectives and lifestyle leanings of such a group can offer competitive advantages."
