How do you squeeze 26.2 miles of marathon course into a single office building? Deploy Solutions, a Boston-based provider of recruiting and hiring solutions, has found a way. The Boston Marathon won't occur for another week, but Deploy employees are navigating their own indoor course, and it's all for a good cause. On March 16, the starting pistol officially launched Deploy's "Race to Finish Hunger," a food drive that continues through April 17, the day of the 110th Boston Marathon. The course of the actual event has been mirrored through the HR company's office complex, with donation checkpoints located along the marathon route. Each checkpoint sports a collection box for different food items. All donations will benefit Pine Street Inn, a regional non-profit organization working to provide homeless people with homeless shelter, affordable housing, and training & job programs.

Immigration, Workers and the Blogosphere
After checking out the blogosphere today, it occurs to me that blogs just might have a real impact on the current debate over US immigration policy. There is certainly no shortage of opinion on the thicket of issues raised by immigration reform. (MonsterBlog)

‘Lost knowledge' threatens business growth, safety
If NASA wanted to send an astronaut to the moon, it couldn't do it. Thirty-seven years ago, $24 billion and countless hours worked by 400,000 employees landed Neil Armstrong on the moon. But in the 1990s, budget cuts and offers of early retirement led engineers to leave the space program—and they took with them the knowledge, experience and judgment needed to re-create a moon landing. Archives of research and blueprints of rocket boosters are lost. To put another human on the moon, NASA will have to start from scratch. (SHRM)

Employment Brand Names and Slogans
One of the crucial elements in building an employment brand is to develop a "theme" that sends a clear brand message to potential candidates. That theme must clearly communicate what working at your firm is all about. One of the best ways to communicate what you are all about is through the use of brand slogans and brand names. In order to be effective, slogans must be short but also compelling and impactful. Over the years I've proposed quite a few brand names and slogans to firms, so if you're looking for one...here's my list of great employment brand slogans, organized by theme. (Dr. John)

Monster.com is a Monster in the Job Search Engine Market
This according to the InternetStockBlog:

"Monster is the leader in a business that many, many companies are in and many more want to be. These set up into two classes of competitors. One class has money and traffic, the other class is desperate. Yahoo! (NASD:YHOO) is in the first class and has large online jobs operation. Watch for Google (NASD:GOOG) to get into this business and companies like Craigslist to expand their presence.

The second class of companies are the desperate ones, the newspapers. Careerbuilder.com, owned by Gannett (NYSE:GCI), Knight-Ridder (NYSE:KRI) and the Tribune Company (NYSE:TRB) is one of the larger job sites. Dow Jones (NYSE:DJ) and the New York Times (NYSE:NYT) are also in the business as are papers in the U.S. and abroad. These are companies with low stock prices primarily because Wall Street believes that the internet is destroying their businesses. They cannot afford to go gentle into the night."

Indian Headhunter Offer 'Speed Dating' Job Services
On a hot summer weekend in India's technology capital, 28,000 young graduates converge on a suburban indoor stadium and create a stampede for jobs in the exploding software and business service industries. A large board advertising Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. falls to the floor with a thud, jostled by a crowd of graduates clutching their resumes in search of a big break with the Nasdaq-listed company. Switzerland:
Zurich is the "best place in world to work"
Zurich's bright lights prove alluring to expatriates (Keystone)  Geneva ranks second in the annual Mercer Human Resource Consulting study, while the Greater Zurich Area was runner-up in the best European business location competition, of Foreign Direct Investment magazine.  Zurich achieved high marks for its stable political environment, international relations, banking and health services in the Mercer poll, which compared 51 cities in 39 categories. The city lagged behind some others for airport and recreation facilities.  (Swissinfo)

US:
Americans still clueless about retirement
Studies show workers are overconfident, underestimate future needs Most Americans' retirement savings are far below the level they need to be for a comfortable living after retirement. Jack VanDerhei of the Employee Benefit Research Institute talks with CNBC's Erin Burnett. Americans are as clueless as ever about their retirement prospects, according to a pair of new studies.  (MSNBC)

Mexicans join tech force
A rapidly growing contingent of Mexican immigrants is writing software at Microsoft, opening a new chapter in the story of Hispanic immigration to the Northwest. These tech professionals, who have come to the Puget Sound region from top-ranked Mexican institutes, are increasingly making their mark on the Redmond software giant. Just a decade ago, no more than 10 Mexicans worked at Microsoft, said Joel Sifuentes, a Microsoft software design engineer who was recruited from the Monterrey Institute of Technology in 1997. Iraqi Terrorists Suffering a Manpower Shortage
April 10, 2006: The enemy in Iraq is having a manpower shortage. This is noted by the reduction in the number of attacks on American troops, and the smaller groups of attackers involved in things like ambushes. This is one of the reasons for the new American policy of fighting it out with ambushes rather than hitting the accelerator. Because of money and recruiting problems, most ambushes in Iraq are conducted by a very small number of attackers. Unlike Vietnam, where the communists might deploy a hundred or so gunmen for an ambush, in Iraq ambush teams are most frequently 5-10 men. This is partially due to the different environment (not much jungle in Iraq) and partially to organizational ones (the enemy was a lot better organized and lot better trained in Vietnam). But mostly, it's a matter of money.  (StrategyPage)

Deep Release:
7 Secrets to Energize Your Workforce
Infusing energy into the workforce is what every business needs to stay ahead of the game according to Annmarie Edwards, author of 50 Tips to Energize Your Workforce. "Energizing your workforce will maximize your staff's potential and provide your company with the tools to excel and prosper for years to come," says Edwards.

According to a 2005 survey conducted by SHRM and CareerJournal.com, which indicated that, hiring and retention are workplace challenges for most employees. In another study done by Monster this year revealed that, 40 percent of HR professional reported an increase in employee's turnover while 70 percent indicated a concern with employee's retention.

A shrinking workforce coupled with the hiring and retaining of talents are pressing issues for workforce management. Edwards suggests the following seven tips to help businesses energize their workforce.

  1. Build bridges. The formation of a strong social network is vital to building connections within staff. A social network has many benefits such as increased productivity, improved communication, and a greater commitment from employees.
  2. Lend an ear. An open door policy enables employees to talk to management freely about work-related matters without feeling intimidated.
  3. Facilitate teamwork. Empower employees through team building activities, which can help to create a sense of belonging. Team building can also improve productivity as teams are challenged to compete with each other.
  4. Educate staff members. Learning new skills is empowering. Conduct career development workshops to identify and expand individuals skills.
  5. A motivated and energetic staff is key to productivity. By sharing the mission and vision of the company, employees will be motivated to work toward company objectives. They will be aware of what the company hopes to achieve in the short-and long-term, and how important their individual role is to the company's vision.
  6. Fun is a highly effective motivator. Leaders can infuse fun into the workplace by organizing events for staff members such as: bowling parties, after-work social events, luncheons, and holiday parties.
  7. Happiness is contagious. Leaders who display a positive attitude and pleasant demeanor, and who set a positive example will energize their workforce and increase employee job satisfaction.
