Reveille and Hyperbole

The ABC audited newspaper circulation data released yesterday (for the year ending September, 2005) tells a stark story of differing market realities and results among the major daily newspapers. The Globe and Mail's circulation has increased with total average weekday circulation up 3.3 per cent to 327,000 and total average Saturday circulation up 3.8 per cent to 409,000. Notably, these gains are attributable to increases in paid circulation (paid 50 per cent or more.) At the same time, other newspapers are reporting circulation drops despite massive increases in their discounted circulation (paid at 50 per cent or less.) National Post total average weekday circulation is down more than 3 per cent, totaling a 25 per cent circulation drop over the last 4 years. Saturday circulation is down more than 2 per cent, totaling a 33 per cent drop
over the past four years. Yet at the same time, the Post's discounted circulation has almost doubled in a single year; up 92.7 per cent on weekdays and 97.7 per cent on Saturdays. "You have to wonder about your business model if year in and year out you're discounting more and yet selling less," said Phillip Crawley, Publisher, The Globe and Mail. "These reports are definitive proof that trying to fatten up your numbers with discounting simply degrades your circulation."

Mohive, a leader in e-learning publishing systems, announced their "100% E-Learning Content Tracking Guarantee" program. The program guarantees that all e-learning content created in Mohive Toolbox will track all relevant data in a company's Learning Management System (LMS). Saba's Learning Management System is the first system to qualify for the guarantee. This means that all e-learning content created in Mohive Toolbox will be 100% track-able in Saba's LMS. Mohive Toolbox, Mohive's enterprise e-learning publishing system, is an enterprise software system that enables organisations to efficiently create and publish e-learning content.

s1jobs and Broadbean have announced a strategic alliance deal which is the first of its kind in the UK recruitment industry.  The tie-up brings together the UK-based multi-site job posting company and Scottish recruitment site in an exclusive arrangement, creating a fully integrated recruitment solution.

The second editions of the "Employee Survey Question Guidebook" and its companion volume, "Employee Surveys: Practical and Proven Methods, Samples, Examples" have been published by Performance Programs, Inc.. Used together, these books provide everything an organization needs to create, administer, and interpret an employee survey. For the first time, both volumes are available as e-books as well as hardcopy book format.

RightNow(R)Technologies (RNOW)  has signed its 100th higher education customer. This milestone underscores RightNow dominance in the market for colleges and universities, which it has achieved by driving significant improvements in student recruiting and retention while at the same time delivering quantifiable reductions in operational costs.

Madgex has completed an major upgrade to the jobs.co.uk site.  Building on the successful candidate/CV database functionality, the jobs.co.uk site is now able to link the candidate and recruiter via its user-friendly job board software. The system is simple and fast to use. Using Madgex's award-winning Origin Job Software platform, jobs.co.uk now offers job seekers a comprehensive job search facility, which links to the recruiters via a feature-rich response management system.

Review of HR reform at Bank of China
Recently, on the list of "The Ideal Employer for Chinese Graduates in 2005" released by Swedish Universum Communications specialized in employer brand management, Bank of China looms over the whole list, ranking the top fourth. Surpassing such transnational banks as CitiBank, HSBC and Deutsche Bank, it tops all financial enterprises. (China Economic Net)

Global:
Why Microsoft is no Craigslist

Microsoft is going after Craigslist for its classifed ads, and the New York Times wonders if the online community can survive the challenge. To which we ask: Why wouldn't it?It certainly isn't the first time that Craigslist has been in someone's crosshairs, and it certainly isn't the first time that Microsoft has tried its hand at this game. Classified ads--which for decades constituted more than 40 percent of the total advertising revenue for many daily newspapers--were a lucrative target of Microsoft's Sidewalk city guides in the late 1990s. But that venture ended with Sidewalk being sold, and CEO Steve Ballmer said later that he would have kept Microsoft out of the media business if he could have done it all over again. Even if Microsoft does become a viable competitor to Craiglist with Windows Live Expo, ultimate success won't be easy. The wildfire popularity of Craigslist may have been a fluke, but that fluke now generates 3 billion page views a month--and, even more important, a kind of grassroots loyalty that few companies can replicate. (Cnet)

Craigslist Encounters: The Darker Side Of Craigslist
We here at SFist don't have that much bad to say about Craigslist. We've found housing, bought and sold things which we never thought possible and maybe even watched a movie about it. Yet, sometimes the dark underbelly of Craigslist rears its ugly head high enough so that it punctures the little dream clouds we are floating on. First, Craigslist gets sued because people are posting clearly discriminatory housing ads. Unfortunately, the mainstream news media picked up on it and gave midwestern house wives and our mothers another reason to fear "the Netscape." However, they do have a point, as it took us all of 30 seconds to find an ad that shows a strong, discriminatory preference. Generally we think that discrimination is bad, however, in the case of roommates it might just be easier for the ad to say something, rather than driving all the way to the inner sunset just to find out if a person is 420 friendly or not?  Oh well, at least the ads above charge rent. A second storm may be brewing as people are now accepting rent in a form other than checks. (SFist)

Focused on Internet search results, new ideas in advertising
As advertsing revenue decreases, the internet is increasingly utilized for advertising space. Newspapers are increasingly looking to the Internet to help them capture new readers and advertisers at a low cost. Here is what a few papers are trying to keep advertising revenue :

  • Some newspapers are selling ads near their search results, like Google and Yahoo. Instead of competeing with these serach engines, some papers are offering search engines that focus on local results, giving readers more than just links to newspaper articles.
  • McClathcy is experimenting with offering flat-rate fees starting at $50 a month for advertisers who want their ads to pop up first alongside search results. In contrast, advertisers must bid for spots on sites like Yahoo or Google and agree to pay a certain amount for each user who clicks on their ad.
  • Newspapers are also experimenting with free classified ads for individuals, which has long been a major source of revenue for newspapers. This idea is to attract a bigger audience to the classifieds, then tr to sell other services such as upgraded placement of ads.

Hiring Your First Employee
For months, you've operated your new business as lean and mean as possible and continue to wear every hat yourself. Finally, you've hit a point -- or your breaking point -- where, in order to remain competitive and prosper, you'll need to welcome a helping hand aboard your tight ship.  But before bringing just anyone on board, you need to understand that extra manpower entails a whole new string of legal obligations, liabilities, expenses and, of course, paperwork. One estimate tallies the average cost of recruiting, hiring and training a new employee at close to $4,000. (TheStreet)

Foundation 9 Entertainment: A Hiring Frenzy
Foundation 9 is going thru a self proclaimed "hiring frenzy," according to one of the founding partners...Foundation 9 Entertainment, the largest independent game developer in North America, announced today that its rapid employee growth has necessitated facilities expansion at four of its seven studios. "We're in a hiring frenzy," said Douglas Hare, founding partner and co-president. "Our need for talented individuals has only continued to grow since Foundation 9 was formed a year ago. Publisher demand for our services has never been higher, and we're expanding to respond to the demand." (Gamecloud)

Employment contracts in Saudi Arabia to end at age 60
In a measure that could adversely affect many Indian workers, Saudi Arabia is set to implement a new labour law next month that would cancel employment contracts for men at the age of 60 and women at 55. The provision is cotained in a new Labour Law scheduled to be implemented from April 13, local media reported today. The rate of Saudisation of jobs in private companies will be raised to 75 per cent with the implementation of the new law, according to 'Arab News' daily. (The Hindu)

Preparing for the Changing Workforce Requires the Right Tools
What do George W. Bush, Cher, Donald Trump, and Dolly Parton have in common? They all turn 60 in 2006. This year marks a generational turning point, as the first of the more than 75 million baby boomers reach the traditional retirement decade. Expected to live to an average age of 83, these individuals are and will still be a major force in the progressively changing workforce climate that businesses are operating in today. The gradual exodus of the baby boomers from full-time work, as well as the work/life balance priorities of the Gen X and Y workers behind them, demand that companies prepare for an increasingly fluid and flexible workforce. They will need to clearly understand what competencies and skills they need to reach corporate objectives, create succession plans and career paths for employees to follow, and be prepared to chart performance and development clearly to reach those goals. Online news challenges older media Broadband drives change, study says
Macalester College sophomore Keri Piepgras can pick up a copy of the New York Times for free at the Campus Center every day, but she doesn't. Instead, she gets her Times delivered to her laptop computer through a high-speed Internet connection in her dorm room.
"I find newspapers bulky," she said. "I just prefer to get it online." Piepgras, a 20-year-old economics and legal studies major, is one of 50 million Americans who get their news online every day, according to a new study. This is a new high-water mark for online news consumers and one fueled by the explosive growth of broadband connections that make downloading news stories and pictures a snap, the study says. India:
IT firms get tough with resume fakers

Wipro's filing a police complaint should be a wake up call for the industry to jointly fight the growing menace of fake resumes  David Edmundson, CEO of US consumer electronics retail giant RadioShack was forced to resign last month. The reason: His resume lied about his educational background.  Faking resumes is not uncommon in the Indian IT industry also. However, when some unscrupulous independent Human Resources outfits act in collusion with jobseekers to improve the latter's chances of getting a job, and subsequently, landing a decent commission from the company that is hiring, the issue is far more serious. Christmas seems to have come early to the IIMs. And as the big pay packets roll in, the entire country seems to applaud in awe... That IIM pass-outs are hot property for domestic recruiters is old news, but now an increasing number of international companies is luring them too. Gaurav Agarwal of IIM Bangalore - starting salary of $193,000 - will vouch for that. The city got its share of the creamy recruitment pie as well when McKinsey, Bloomberg, Microsoft and Barclays recruited four IIM alumni - Chetan Manikonda, Aditya Lanka, Suraj Marpak and Narsimha Raju - from here (Times of India)

Ireland:
'Economy to boom for 15 years'
Stockbrokers says the implications for the economy generally are extremely bullish based on the population projections out to 2020. The reports identifies the baby boomers of the 1970s and early 1980s as uniquely important to the ongoing solid outlook.  Between 1971 and 1983 over 900,000 people were born in Ireland, with the annual number of births averaging almost 70,000.  That was the highest sustained annual number since the foundation of the state. It peaked at over 74,000 in 1980, the highest number since 1922. Between 1922 and 1972 the average was significantly lower at 61,000. (IrishExaminer)

Mexico:
Spurring economic development in homeland a frustrating goal
Years ago they crossed the border in search of better lives. Now they want to give people back home the one thing that might have persuaded them to stay: good jobs.
With donations collected at house parties and neighborhood barbeques, well-organized migrant groups in California, Texas and the American Midwest are drawing up plans for economic development projects that they hope will reduce the pressure to leave Mexico. "We want immigration to be an option, not a necessity," said Efrain Jimenez, vice president of the Zacatecan Federation of Southern California, which is spearheading the creation of several "productive projects" in rural Zacatecas state in north central Mexico (Mercury News)

New Zealand:
Seasonal Work Permit Pilot extended to September
More overseas workers will be available to meet seasonal labour peaks in the horticulture and viticulture industry this year, says Immigration Minister David Cunliffe. "In December 2005 a seasonal work permit pilot was launched to run until July 2006, as a further avenue for meeting the industry's labour needs in the peak season," Mr Cunliffe said. "However, industry has signalled the season will go on for longer than expected – so in response we're extending the pilot to September 2006. "This way, we're providing a responsive, fast and efficient process to help meet the immediate labour needs of one of our most vital industries - while ensuring the employment of New Zealanders remains a top priority." Since September 2005, Flagship, a leading training solutions provider based on the South Coast, has been managing one of the largest apprenticeship schemes in the country; Network Rail's engineering apprenticeship programme at HMS Sultan in Gosport. New employment guide for the over fifties!
According to the Office for National Statistics the number of pension-aged workers surged to more than 1.1m in 2005, the highest level since records began in 1992. By 2010, forty percent of the workforce will be aged 45 or over, and the proportion of older people in the population is growing. Changes in age discrimination laws due to come into force in October this year will mean it will become unlawful when employing or training people to discriminate directly or indirectly on the grounds of age. Many people now continue to work past the age of fifty. Despite all the promises about an end to age discrimination, it's still not easy to find employment if you're over 50 - or even younger in some cases. (OnRec)
