This paper explores which trends are likely to become more pronounced, and what strategies governments and employers can employ to lessen the impact to their organizations. Download PDF - 263 KB

Australia:
McDonalds rolls out online recruitment
As part of its e-People strategy, McDonalds Restaurant is rolling out an online recruitment and staff induction platform to 730 retail food outlets across Australia. The platform, known as metime, is a fully integrated, multi-functional online recruitment, learning and communications solution that was piloted last year on the NSW central coast and provided by TodayCorp. Metime allows candidates to apply for employment and be assessed online. This is followed by a face to face interview, an online new employee orientation and induction program that is completed prior to the employees first shift. (Computerworld)

Stanford prof predicts life expectancy of 100 years by 2030Associated Press
The average life expectancy for people living in most industrial nations could reach 100 within the next 25 years, according to a Stanford University researcher.
Advances in anti-aging technology and treatments for diseases such as cancer could push the average life expectancy from just under 80 years old to 100 years old by 2030, said Shripad Tuljapurkar, a biology and demographics professor. Tuljapurkar presented his latest work on life expectancy last month at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in St. Louis. Tuljapurkar, whose research has been used by the U.S. Social Security Administration to develop probability models for population projections, is part of a growing international debate about the effects of increasing life expectancy on social programs and health care. How Staffing Builds A Corporate Asset... and How Much Is It Worth?
A few months ago I had a conversation with a VP of HR of a High Tech firm who recounted a discussion he had with his CFO.

CFO: "By the way, what is the value of having 350,000 candidates in our database?"
VP of HR: "Those candidates represent a lot of value for us, and also we have to keep them for legal reasons."
CFO: "Oh, okay for legal reasons."
VP of HR: "Yes, but it is also very valuable for us."
CFO: "How valuable? I mean is it tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands…?"
VP of HR: "Well, I am not too sure…"

This article draws on a financial model outlined in Taleo's report "Economics of Candidate Databases" to describe how the VP of HR may respond with the precision required by the financier. (Taleo)

Westerners Follow Outsourcing to India to Work at Call Centers
They have been labeled as "adventure workers" who have been joining the Indian work force from the U.S. and Europe. It has been sometime since India's outsourcing and information technology firms have been hiring foreigners at higher and middle levels for their expertise. However, workers from abroad are seeking lower-end jobs as well, such as answering phones at call centers, for a pittance of what they earn in their home countries. (NewAmericanMedia)

Women and the workforce
The New York Times' bizarre and suspiciously predetermined editorial effort to talk women out of working continued last week with a front-page article emblazoned with the headline, "Stretched to Limit, Women Stall March to Work." The gist of the story is women's workforce participation grew at a "blistering pace" between the 1950s and the mid-1990s. But since then, the growth in the percentage of "adult women" (are there any "child women?") working for pay (as opposed to working "at home" for free) has stalled and even slipped since the turn of the millennium. This change, according to the Times, has left women's workforce participation rates "well below that of men." (Scripps-Howard)

India:
Trend of working from home to breed productive, liberated workforce
SonicWALL Inc., an integrated network security and productivity solutions provider, has announced the results of a survey of 941 remote and mobile workers worldwide. The survey, conducted by Insight Express and SonicWALL at the end of 2005, indicates that the growing trend towards home working is likely to breed a more productive and liberated international workforce. 76% of employees surveyed believe that working remotely is an aid to productivity and 61% are also convinced that their managers agree with them. Security came low on the list of priorities, however, with 88% of the individuals surveyed admitting to storing passwords in easily discovered locations, and only 12% employing encrypted files to store and manage their login data. 56% said they rely on their memories to keep track of their network passwords, while others used the same passwords for all devices, stored the information on cell phones, or stuck notes with the login information onto their computer (4%). UK:
Search engines drive most traffic to recruitment sites- research
Search engines are the most popular way for Web users to find recruitment sites, with fish4jobs proving to be the most popular site, according to new research. The National Online Recruitment Audience Survey (NORAS) 2006 results gathered data from 18,724 people, representing the group's biggest sample to date. The report identified the average online job seeker as 34 years old with 13 years' work experience, earning £34,000 and visiting over five sites when actively job-hunting. Nearly two-thirds (64%) are looking for a full-time permanent position, with 27% seeking temporary work and 21% searching for a part-time job. Nearly four in five (79%) applied for work electronically, with 43% emailing their CV to an employer and 28% completing an online application form. Just 6% put a hard-copy CV in the post. (Netimperative)

Doctors attack online recruitment
Some doctors believe talented students are missing out on jobs  A new online application system for junior doctor posts is harming the job prospects of many top students, more than 80 senior doctors have warned.  The Modernising Medical Careers system scraps interviews in favour of points scoring from application forms answers. In a letter to the Times, the specialists claim the process is untested and is leaving students bitter, angry and demoralised. (BBC)

US:
Las Vegas Faces Labor Shortage
A 'material lack of qualified labor in Las Vegas over the next several years' threatens new casinos and high-rise condominiums being developed here, a Deutsche Bank study found. (CasinoCityTimes)

Study: US Outsourcing Fears Greatly Exaggerated
The movement of computing work to countries outside the United States represents an economic and scientific challenge, but the fears of job migration far outweigh the reality so far, according to a new study by the Association for Computing Machinery. The lengthy report, which was released on Thursday, is the result of a yearlong project by the organization to assess the impact and implications of the offshoring of software development and research. (CRMNews)

Employers of Illegal Workers in a Catch-22
Those who try to help employees obtain legal residency get caught in a bureaucratic tangle that can take years to unravel and carries some risk. Business owner Tom Nogradi said he wanted to do the right thing. So when his employees admitted they were undocumented and asked for help applying for green cards, he agreed to sponsor them. But things didn't go as expected. Immigration agents raided Nogradi's Valencia company in 2000, looking for illegal workers. He lost 15 employees. (LATimes)

Workforce Woes and Wins Offshoring Isn't so Bad!
Sending IT jobs out of the country may actually increase opportunities in The U.S., according to a recent study by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The ACM says the cost savings resulting from outsourcing offshore will create new business opportunities and new jobs for technology workers, especially for those trained in software architecture, product design and project management. The study, Globalization and Offshoring of Software, estimates that up to three percent of American IT jobs will be outsourced to other countries annually in the coming years. However, this loss will be outpaced by the new jobs generated as a result of business investments. (CIOBlog)

Trends in the Accounting Workforce
The results of A Decade of Changes in the Accounting Profession: Workforce trends and Human Capital Practices, released in February, indicate that women are increasingly attaining leadership positions in public accounting firms and that both men and women are taking advantage of the alternative career paths offered by an increasing number of firms. The Study was conducted under the aegis of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' (AICPA's) Work/Life and Women's Initiatives Executive Committee and more than 2,600 CPAs took part in the research. Marketing & Staffing Strategy: Do You Have One?
Whether you are a franchisor or a multiunit franchisee, you must have noticed that the marketing and sales landscape is changing. No matter what kind of business you're in, status quo marketing and sellingis no longer going to get you the resultsyou need or want. In a business-to-consumer franchise system you will see the demographic changes in your customer marketplaces more quickly than in business-to-business. Time to wake up and smell the demographic coffee! Nothing wakes you up more than hard numbers–true, no-lie statistics. Did you know that the fastest-growing segments of the U.S. population are Asian American, Hispanic, African American, and the over-55 populations? Nearly 90 percent of the U.S. population lives in urban settings. In the top 100 U.S. cities, former minorities have become the majority. All of this we have known in our field for years. (Area Developer)

Hiring both candidate, spouse not uncommon
Higher education can be a family affair. When Kansas University recently revealed its picks for two of several top administrative openings, the university also announced it would put their spouses on the payroll. "These days, more often than not, you're really recruiting two professionals to your faculty when you go out," KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway said. "I think of it as a family employment policy. We believe in family values." (LJWorld)

Accommodating older workers could ease labor shortage
At the very time a shortage of young workers is looming, a lot of baby boomers are indicating they plan to continue working beyond normal retirement age. "It's kind of a serendipitous meeting of need and demand," said Mark Haverland, director of the Iowa Division of Elder Affairs. If older workers stay employed longer than expected, the projected labor shortage might be eased considerably. (DesMoinesRegister)
