Politicians Discuss Pension Cuts for Childless Germans: Germany's younger generation is dwindling
New statistics confirming the declining birth rate have sent Germany in to a state of panic, amid a growing consensus that pensions should be increased for people with children and reduced for those without. "People without children should either receive a reduced pension or pay more into pension schemes,"
said Norbert Geis from the CSU. Johann Eekhoff, director of the Cologne institute for Economic Policy said a reform of the pension system was long overdue. "People without children should never have been admitted into pension schemes because these only work when they are financed by subsequent
generations," he said in an interview with mass-circulation Bild newspaper. "Their pensions should be cut by 50 percent." (DW-World.de)
Population shock in Germany
German women have the fewest children in the world, causing a rapid population decline in the 80-million-person nation, according to a new study. A German woman has 1.36 children on average, the lowest number of any country in the world outside the Vatican, according to the Berlin Institute for Population and
Development. In 2005, roughly 680,000 children were born in Germany -- the least since 1945. Former communist East Germany is hit hardest: The area had already suffered from a low-child generation, when immediately after the Germany's reunification in 1990, child numbers there dropped to .77 children per
woman. The population drop there is aggravated by a demographic outflux, as young easterners often move to economically stable states, such as Bavaria or Baden-Wuerttemberg. Eastern Germany has the highest unemployment rate in the country. (UPI)

Microsoft's labor troubles
On top of a stagnant stock and a host of new competition, the software giant is said to be struggling to attract the best young talent. Microsoft's all grown up. Now, along with the middle-age woes of a stagnant stock and a host of new competition, the world's biggest computer software maker apparently
can add "attracting young blood" to its list. Microsoft's top excecs may be excited to work at the company, but some rank and file employees are not, a report says. Microsoft (Research) employees are growing more and more disillusioned with stagnating salaries and an increasingly contentious
review system that they say is unfair, according to a recent report in WashTech News. That's led to more defections by senior engineers and growing dissatisfaction among rank-and-file workers, the report said. (CNN)
Knowledge: The Essence of Metadata: Federated Agility's Secret Ingredient
Before getting into federated agility, I want to describe a scenario where business value has evolved over the past 20 years. Let me take you back: planning of a family vacation involved only a few simple activities. The first step was asking your friends and family about where they have gone before. In the
process, they would tell you about different hotels, restaurants and airlines with which they had the best experience. Based on the level of trust you had with these sources of information, you placed a couple of phone calls and made the travel reservations. Most other decisions and experience components were
defined by chance (i.e., weather, traffic, discounts or local events). (DMReview.com)

consultant based in Greensboro, N.C., and the publisher of the Herman Trend Alert, a weekly e-newsletter that identifies business trends. (BusinessWeek)
VP-of-HR Newsletter
Welcome to VP of HR, the strategic newsletter for senior HR executives of Fortune 500 firms and those aspiring to the role. The goal of VP of HR is to offer out of the box solutions and alternatives to the traditional ways of approaching HR. Approximately half of the articles are "think pieces" whose primary

Many of the remaining articles discuss more practical tools and strategies that are designed give you answers to current and emerging issues in human resources. One of our primary goals is to challenge traditional thinking,
so don't expect to agree with everything we say. Our assumption from the beginning is that you already know how "most people do it" so we won't waste your time with traditional solutions. (Dr. John)

Ireland:
Irish labour demand remains high despite fall off in February according to Bank of Ireland; Demand highest in the professional and construction sectors
Just over 35,000 job advertisements have been placed in the national daily and Sunday newspapers in the first two months of this year, according to the latest Bank of Ireland Business Banking Job Index that was published today. This is slightly less than the same period last year mainly due to a fall (-8%) in
the number of ads in February compared to the corresponding month last year. Despite this reverse, demand for labour is set to remain high for the coming year with all indicators suggesting that job seekers face a buoyant market for the remainder of 2006. (FinFacts)

Troop movements
How is it that some companies are doing so much better at winning the war for talent? Here is a battle plan for managing your best asset
Ever since two McKinsey consultants coined the phrase ‘the war for talent' back in the 1990s, employee commitment has dropped dramatically. In the last two decades, we have witnessed growth of what is euphemistically described as the ‘X' and ‘Y' generations – who strive for work life balance and are prepared
to make career choices that most of us born before 1970 would not consider. (Accountancy Age)

Blogging for Business
The question is not, "Should your business have a blog?" but, "Should your blog have a business?" Back in the early days of the Internet boom, the late 1990s, some of us bought more domain names than we could manage. I even got a four letter domain name: bn.gs, before the
International Internet Authority stopped selling them. The lazy way to keep these websites updated was to throw some guestbook technology on each of them and allow visitors to write and that was the content. This way, the website owners saved themselves some work. (Breaking

New NMI Survey Reveals Baby Boomer Challenges
What are the biggest challenges faced by Boomers as they age and face retirement?
Whereby half of Boomers indicate that losing mental capacity is their biggest fear about aging, a majority indicate they do not have a sound plan for retirement and are not on target with their financial retirement plan. The median net worth of Boomers is only $78,000 - not enough to provide
long-term security and a major dilemma as Boomers expect to live to age 82 and want to live to age 90.
Adding to their retirement dilemma, Boomers indicate that they will need to be reliant on government programs such as Social Security and Medicare, but three quarters feel little or no control over these programs - and only 7% are very satisfied with them.
The importance of these government programs to consumers has grown 33% from 20 years ago. And only 58% of Boomers state they are aware of the new Medicare Part D program, with only 21% planning to sign up when they become eligible (41% are unsure).
Boomers' physical health as they age is also a concern. According to Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) Managing Partner Steve French, "There's a major disconnect between what Boomers understand is the correct behavior to follow in order to maintain health and what they actually do.
For example, while about 90% feel exercise is the primary way to promote healthy aging, 27% admit to not exercising at all and 37% only work out 2 or fewer days a week. Adding to their quandaries, 4 out of 10 are confused about eating healthy."
Some of this understanding/behavior conundrum can be explained by the fact that 3 out of 5 Boomers believe that advances in healthcare are going to cure any diseases they get and 82% believe those advances will expand their lifespan - thereby relying upon the healthcare system and medical
science to alleviate the harm they may be doing to themselves.
These are just a few findings from NMI's recent research, The Healthy Aging/Boomer Database(TM). Conducted in January 2006 among 1,502 Boomers, the data is nationally representative, balanced to U.S. Census data, with a +/- 2.6% margin of error.
The Natural Marketing Institute is a strategic consulting and market research company specializing in health and wellness.
