    Fire Hose

(May 22, 2002) - Quality is always the problem with resume flow. Current automated systems supply either too few candidates in a drought or too many in the rainy season. Given the relatively primitive nature of mass-market job board advertising (trying to reach everyone who works, more or less), it's little surprise that quality (even at the level of basic qualifications) is beyond the reach of a pure resume database.

Recently, we had an opportunity to watch a team of recruiters using Monster's services. One job ad produced a constant flow of 50 resumes per hour. It was enough to make us wonder whether or not any customer could possibly need any other service. It was like standing in front of a fire hose. There is simply no other service available that can produce that sort of volume. It was astonishing.

Certainly, no one could argue with a process that sifted through a thousand resumes in order to produce the job candidate. It only took a day to get there. The flow didn't stop, ultimately the recruiters, more or less, turned it off.

From where we stood, it looked like trying to fill a glass of water with a fire hose.

Like drinking from a fire hose, Monster's current problem is that overproduction is as bad as underproduction, maybe worse. While it became clear to us that 'dominant' doesn't even come close to describing Monster's market position, it also became clear that specialization, whether it involves disciplined focus by competitors or a data collection method at Monster, is the name of the game.

We've patiently held to the belief that the free-form resume would have an enduring life. As we watched the amazing display of results from a single ad, we suddenly understood why 'profiles' would overtake resumes as the preferred form of credentials presentation. Without structured data, all of the stuff coming out of the fire hose is the same. The best way to improve quality, we think, is to segment the material before it comes out of the hose.

Once Monster turns full into the profile business, the standard will change. They are actually in a position that combines the self-interest and ability to shift job hunting out of its reliance on the resume. It's an impressive opportunity.
