The project itself was divided into about 50
discrete areas. In each area, there was a requirement for research, planning,
discussion and the reporting of results. The material quickly became voluminous. The first thing we discovered was that the
consulting company was a "one tune" operation. In other words, they
assumed that there was only one way to use their software. By the end of the
project, we had all but eliminated their participation while we continued to use
their product. This sort of work-group messaging and storage
system is one of the emerging alternatives to email. We're participating in a
couple of interesting experiments that involve structured instant messaging, on
the fly XML categorization, and web servers nested within CRM systems. Each of
the tools is in a primitive form and in no danger of ever becoming as ubiquitous
as email. But, as we said yesterday, our email
effectiveness is so low that we need to find an alternative. In the mail from yesterday's article we received
20 or so notes from folks who are trying to manage their overheads by deflecting
incoming crap mail. We got one interesting piece from a fellow who was raving
about the results his operation was getting from a direct marketing campaign. We
wanted to take the time to tell him that his near term gain came at everyone
else's long term expense. We deleted another hundred pieces of junk mail
from other sources instead.
