Working for the Long Haul More seniors hanging onto
their jobs -- out of fun and necessity
There's an old saying that nobody lies on their deathbed wishing they'd spent
more time at the office. That little chestnut might not apply to Mike Demaras,
though. "I enjoy it, every minute of it," said Demaras, a 78-year-old senior
sales consultant at Enterprise Bank. "I'll do it as long as I'm physically able
and the bank wants to keep me on." Demaras has plenty of company, according to a
survey released in April by the MetLife Mature Market Institute. Research
revealed that 37 percent of 66- to-70-year-olds are either working or looking
for work, as are 60 percent of 60- to-65-year-olds and 78 percent of 55-
to-59-year-olds. Among the oldest age bracket, 72 percent of employees cited the
desire to "stay active and engaged" as a primary reason to work. (Lowell

Deep Release:
Highlights from the September employment report
The total number of new jobs (+51,000) in September was about half of consensus
estimates (although one widely-followed economic report estimated earlier this
week only a 78,000-job gain ) but the unemployment rate ticked down 0.1% to
4.6%, adding some credence to a belief that there has been a fundamental shift
regarding "normal" job growth (see above). Wages continued on its upward track
with average hourly earnings rising in September by 4 cents, which was 0.2%; for
the year, average weekly earnings are up 4.0%. The employment-to-population
ratio was 63.1% (steady for the month and up slightly for the year) and the
labor force participation rate was unchanged at 66.2% for both the month and
from a year earlier.
Jobs Report
The 51,000-job overall increase in September was less than half
of the average monthly growth of the past six months; obviously
September's performance brought the average down.
- The goods-producing sector lost 11,000 jobs due to a very familiar
reason -- a loss of Manufacturing jobs, which was down 19,000 in September.
- Growth in the Construction sector slowed with only an 8,000-job gain
last month (it gained 23,000 in August).
- Natural resources and mining, which is also part of the goods-producing
sector, didn't add any jobs to the pile, but didn't take any away either; it
was steady.
- Activity in the services-providing sector was mixed with 62,000 new
jobs.
- The Retail Trade sector continued to shed jobs for the second
consecutive month with 12,000 fewer jobs in September.
- Professional and Business Services picked up the same number of jobs and
was up 12,000 with 9,700 of those in Accounting and Bookkeeping Services.
- Education and Health Services was able to maintain a healthy profile
with 15,000 new jobs; Home Health Care Services, a sub-sector, added 3,100
jobs in September while Hospitals registered 6,500 more jobs.
- Leisure and Hospitality continue to welcome in more workers -- it was up
10,000 more jobs.
- Government jobs were down 8,000 with state governments releasing 22,000
jobs, local governments taking in 18,000 new jobs, and the federal
government letting 4,000 employees go.
Temporary Help Services Roundup
According to the BLS,
Temporary Help Services employment lost 11,300 jobs in
September to settle at 2,592,200 (seasonally adjusted). For September,
temporary help employment was down by 0.4% from the previous month but up
0.7% from September 2005.
Temporary help services employment continued its gradual decline of market
share of overall jobs in September to 1.91%. The recent high was 1.96% in
December 2005, meaning close to 2% of all jobs were within the temporary
help services sector.
Household Survey (officially known as the Current Population Survey, or CPS)
The overall unemployment rate continued to improve incrementally by 0.1% to
4.6% in September (was 4.7% in August and 4.8% in July). This was because
the size of the labor force only increased 101,000 in September while the
number of employed persons grew by 271,000 to 144.8 million and there were
170,000 fewer people unemployed (less than 7 million in September). There
were 152,000 more people not in the workforce in September from the previous
month for a total of 77.6 million.

Steinberg who does a tremendous job tracking this data.
