who have already landed their first job, had never heard of their employer
before they started their job search. Only 35% were familiar with their new
employer before beginning their job search. So how do job seekers find out about
hiring employers? Expanding your network is the key, according to Brian Krueger,
President of CollegeGrad.com. "Don't just go after the brand name employers.
Explore all of the opportunities available to entry level job seekers. Search

Oilpatch lacks plan for labour
A survey suggests the Canadian oilpatch is keenly aware of the effects of a
worsening labour shortage, but few companies have strategies in place to deal
with it. The survey by Deloitte consultants involved 55 senior managers from the
Canadian oil and gas, utilities and mining sectors. The study says Canadian
energy companies have a greater awareness of the impending talent shortage, but
only 18 per cent of respondents have plans in place to deal with it. (Business

Local firms are having a tough time finding the right Chinese staff
Vincent Wong, president of Richmond-based ACT360, says he sees a huge market for
his company's software among Chinese university students seeking to improve
their English skills for when they begin to climb the career ladder. As
multinational corporations race to set up shop in the economic powerhouse,
China's supply of experienced, English-speaking workers is rapidly dwindling.
"There is intense competition for well-educated, English-speaking, professional
staff who have experience working with multinational companies," said Diana
Barkley, director of public affairs for Vancouver-based Methanex Corp. (Vancouver

Czech Republic:
Czech Republic fertile ground for
headhunters
A growing local economy has helped executive search firms to flourish in the
Czech Republic over the last 15 years. Prominent international players such as
Korn/Ferry International, Egon Zehnder Management Consulting, Spencer Stuart
Management Consulting and MRINetwork compete locally with domestic firms — often
created and run by their former employees. Czech-based headhunters continue to
make a healthy profit from supplying the expanding business market with the
necessary input of "white collars." But some insiders express concern over what
they see as a lack of regulation and ethics on the market — and the low quality
of services provided by smaller firms. (Czech

Global:
DSL Boom Equals DSL Talent Shortage
Emerging broadband nations like China and India are deploying DSL as fast as
they can. But not fast enough - because of some serious talent shortage. China
is facing an acute shortage of DSL engineers. Recruit.net, an Asia-specific job
search engine, shows 150 openings for "DSL" related jobs. 326 jobs in India.
Vast.com has over 14,000 job listings under the keyword "DSL." Interesting
indications for an ongoing broadband boom… not that there is anything wrong with
it. Anyway if you are a DSL dude (or DSL Diva), time to put on your traveling
shoes and go find your fortunes elsewhere. (Om

US:
We need better educated people
It's downright depressing to think about the many problems facing our nation
over the next decade and beyond. For starters, the transition from cheap to
costly energy, which will be a long, messy process, will cut into America's
standard of living - as will stiff competition from countries like China and
India, who want a larger piece of the global economic pie. We still have to
figure out how to pay for the prohibitively expensive costs associated with our
baby boomers' looming retirement and health care. Then, there's Iran and the
bomb, North Korea and the bomb, Osama and the bomb, Europe's growing
anti-Americanism, global warming fanaticism, our porous borders, our sizable,
permanent urban underclass - and a democracy's greatest enemy: civic apathy and
ignorance, which is directly responsible, both for our dysfunctional political
process, and our increasingly unresponsive, increasingly corrupt political
class. (Jackson

Skilled labor supply becoming thin
Antoinette Lucero figured she'd never find a job. Unemployed and on welfare for
five years, she wondered who would hire a deaf woman with little training. But
the 29-year-old single mother learned about a free program sponsored by staffing
company Manpower Inc. to earn certification in electronics assembly. She's now
an inspector and assembler at Sennheiser Electronic Corp. in Albuquerque, N.M.,
living in her own apartment and saving for her daughter's college education.
"It's a career for me, it's not just a job," Lucero said. "So there's a big
difference. I never felt before that I had a career." (San
Gabriel Valley Tribune)
Last words: Employers should use what they learn in exit interviews to
better the conditions of those who still work for the company.
When Vicki Myoda was director of human resources with a Delaware bank, she found
exit interviews — those sit-downs with employees who are leaving the company —
invaluable. "People told me the real scoop," said Myoda, who is now head of

Personal Income Rates Up, but Not Up Enough
Personal income in Eau Claire is growing at the third fastest rate in the state,
but no Wisconsin city reached the national average. In a new report, the U.S.
Bureau of Economic Analysis says Eau Claire's per capita income grew 3.7% from
2004 to 2005, behind only Wausau and the Milwaukee area, but the national growth
average is 4%. Wisconsin has an older population overall, which means fewer
workers, but in Western Wisconsin, demand for workers is still strong. (WEAU)
Deep Release:
Online Recruitment Activity Rises
in 25 of Top 28 U.S. Metro Markets in August, According to the Monster Local
Employment Index
August 2006 Monster Local Employment Index Highlights:
Index shows greater online job availability in majority of
U.S. metro markets in August, as back-to-work, back-to-school season helps drive
increased employer recruitment activity
Portland and San Diego register strongest rate of increase in August, while
Houston shows the strongest rate of growth year over year
Online job opportunities in education, training, and library occupations rise or
hold steady in all 28 markets with particular strength in Portland, Seattle and
San Diego
Twenty-six markets registered increased online job availability for management
occupations, with Cincinnati showing the greatest year-over-year growth
Online job availability rose in a majority of the largest U.S. metropolitan
areas during August, as the back-to-work, back-to-school season helped drive
increased online recruitment activity in 25 of the top 28 markets tracked by the
Monster Local Employment Index.
Portland and San Diego registered the largest rate of
month-to-month increase in August, as both markets jumped eight points amid
higher demand for education, community, food services and construction workers.
Rebounding from a two-month seasonal slump, the Boston market also saw a sharp
rise of seven points fueled by a greater number of online job openings in
research and creative positions, while Seattle resumed its strong upward growth
trend since the beginning of the year, gaining six points.
Meanwhile, Houston saw a solid rise of three points last month
and now tops the list of fastest growing online recruitment markets over the
past year, with strong growth in demand for white- and blue-collar workers
alike, likely driven by explosive growth in the local energy sector. The West
Coast markets of San Diego, Portland and Seattle are now the second, third and
fourth fastest growing, while Phoenix, the long-time growth leader on a
year-over year basis, occupies the fifth spot.
The Index also measured stronger-than-average up-ticks in
online job demand in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. metro areas, with both
rising five points during August and showing improved year-over-year growth
rates that signal accelerated online recruitment in the capital region heading
into the fall season.
Defying the national trend, online job availability in the Los
Angeles market dipped three points in August, due to softened demand for
technically skilled labor in occupations such as IT, engineering and military
specific. Cincinnati dipped one point, while Indianapolis held steady from the
previous month.
Online job opportunities in education, training, and library
occupations rose or held steady in all 28 markets in August, with Portland,
Seattle and San Diego showing significant strength in demand for workers in the
category. All but two of the 28 markets also registered increased online job
availability for management occupations, with Cincinnati remaining the top
growth market year over year. Among all the occupational categories tracked by
the Index, food preparation and serving occupations have now seen the fastest
rate of increase over the year for the 28 markets combined.
"The Monster Local Employment Index findings for August
reiterate the same strong rebound in online job availability that the national
Index measured earlier this month and point to broadly higher demand for white
collar and blue collar occupations at the start of the back-to-work,
back-to-school season," said Steve Pogorzelski, Group President, International
at Monster Worldwide. "In addition to overall stepped-up recruitment activity
for workers in academic, management and food-related positions last month, the
local Index showed continued strong demand for military, security and
defense-related occupations, as well as non-profit positions in community and
social services. Other market-specific hot pockets include transportation and
manufacturing in Houston, IT in Kansas City, entertainment in Orlando,
healthcare in Phoenix, and construction in Seattle."
The September results of the Monster Local Employment Index
will be released on October 19, 2006.
About the Monster Local Employment Index
Providing a broad, comprehensive monthly analysis of online
job demand in the top 28 U.S. metro markets, the Monster Local Employment Index
is an extension of the national Monster Employment Index, which is compiled each
month by researchers at Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NASDAQ: MNST), parent company
of the leading global online career and recruitment resource, Monster(R). Based
on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from more
than 1,500 Web sites, including Monster(R), the Monster Local Employment Index
presents a snapshot of employer online recruitment activity in the top 28 U.S.
markets with the largest working populations.
The Index counts job postings as an indicator of employer
demand for employees or, in other words, job availability. Job postings are
online advertisements placed by an employer looking to fill one or more vacant,
or recently created, job positions. All of the data and findings have been
validated for accuracy through independent, monthly third party auditing
conducted by ARC Research of Cranford, New Jersey. Individual Index reports
containing data for each of the 28 metro markets, as well as additional
information on occupational demand in each area, are now available at
http://LocaleIndex.monsterworldwide.com .
