that he wanted to get in the game and not stand on the sidelines and complain
about what was not done to help victims of Hurricane Katrina or other natural
and unnatural disasters. So Tull, a former division 1 basketball player and
Executive Director of CRT, made a decision that his organization is going to
raise 1 million or more in order to have a more dramatic impact on those who are
affected by catastrophic events. Tull's organization operates a job board that
is comprised of college graduates who competed as student-athletes while
undergraduates at their respective institutions.

Training HR managers to encounter the age
and gender bias in IT
A new Leonardo da Vinci project has kicked off recently. The project coordinated
by the Vienna based Centre for Social Innovation, aims at developing training
tools for HR managers in IT in order to get over the age and gender bias that
characterises the industry. The project called MATURE brings together a
consortium of 16 partners, including IT companies, universities, NGOs and UNI
Europa's IT Committee. The need for remedies is obvious: the IT industry is
still primarily male and young. Over 80% of all IT professionals are under the
age of 45 and less than 20% are female. As study by the University of Cambridge,
analyzing IT employment in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK, shows that less
than 5% of the IT workforces in these three countries are in the age group of 55
– 64. (UNI)

Link building, Web 2.0 style
Getting listed in social sites or "folksonomies" like digg, Netscape, Reddit and
Fanpop, may help generate links and improve your search engine ranking. Web 2.0
is a buzzword for the increasing importance of social sites, i.e. websites where
the readers contribute more to the content of the site than the owners
themselves. There are especially three types of Web 2.0 sites that are of
importance for search engine marketers: bookmarking sites like del.icio.us, blog
trackers and search engines like Technorati, and article recommendation sites
like digg. (Pandia)

Bottomley Predicts
Executive Search Industry Consolidation
Virginia Bottomley, an executive director of OPD, has
forecast a wave of consolidation in the executive search industry. Addressing
the Recruitment Society last week on the subject New Developments in Search, she
said there would be "fewer, larger" firms as the search industry followed the
trend set by the bigger law and accountancy firms. Bottomley served in the last
Conservative government, from 1992 to 1995 as health secretary, and then
national heritage secretary until 1997. She was an MP from 1984 until last year,
when she became Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone. She joined Odgers, now part
of OPD, in 1999. Among the roles she has recruited for was chief executive of
the London Organising Committee for the Olympics, when she headhunted Paul
Deighton from Goldman Sachs. (recruitermagazine.co.uk)

Labor Shortage: Recruitment and Retention Strategies
The labor market has gotten so tight that one employer at the recent Loudoun

Help Wanted In Central Florida
The signs of a booming economy are up in Central Florida. Help wanted signs are
posted everywhere, including signs on gas pumps that offer jobs to people ready

aren't paying high-end wages,

Finding a Job: What's Your Passion?
For a generation, workers would decide on a career and stick with it
until retirement. Today, it's very common for people to change their
careers as many as four to seven times in a lifetime. And as many as
half of all employees in this country say they'd love to make a job
change if they could. The reasons for changing careers vary from
displeasure with initial choices and boredom to new values and
dreams for yourself or even the desire to make more money. (ABCNews)
Dream home wish lists are unique for every
individual
If only Ty Pennington would build a dream house for all of us. He
would arrive with builders and decorators and landscape crews and
turn our everyday habitat into a space that goes beyond our wildest
expectations in a television nanosecond. Hit the snooze button.
Because that kind of miracle only happens in our sleep cycle.
A survey done by GFK Roper, a global research organization, found
that different generations have different aspirations for their
living space. The survey outlined dream living arrangements by age
group — Generation Y (born from 1978 to the present); Generation X
(born from 1965 to 1977) and the Baby Boomers (born from 1946 to
1964). (Journalstar)
Being young isn't as easy as some old-timers
think it is
Spare me from the folks who complain that today's young people have
it easy. Life is much tougher for the average person starting out
today as opposed to the circumstances that confronted many baby
boomers leaving the nest in the 1960s and '70s. Think about the
economic and educational hurdles that are much higher today. Members
of Generation X and Generation Y often pay more just to rent an
apartment than their parents pay for a mortgage on a house. (PensacolaNewsJournal.com)

Deep Release:
APSCREEN Warns Businesses of Common Background Check
Mistakes That Could Lead to Negligent Hiring Lawsuits
Background check pioneer Tom Lawson serves as expert witness on many court cases
that he says could have been avoided.
"If they only knew what I know," says Thomas Lawson, CEO of
APSCREEN, "then businesses could avoid negligent hiring lawsuits altogether."
According to Lawson, today background checks are becoming a standard procedure
that provides a false sense of security due to processes fraught with pitfalls.
Lawson pioneered the background check industry in 1980 when he
was among the first to provide corporations with a comprehensive pre-employment
screening service. His first clients were from the aerospace industry who
demanded the highest level of background checking.
A Certified Fraud Examiner and Certified International
Investigator, Lawson is also recognized as one of the first court-certified
"expert" witnesses on cases requiring testimony (in trial and depositions)
related to negligent hiring, human resource management, employment screening,
and use, interpretation, as well as compliance of Fair and Accurate Credit
Transactions Act (FACTA), Consumer Credit Reporting Reform Act (CCRRA), and the
Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in the Human
Resource context. He has been listed in O'Brien's Legal Expert Pages since 1993
and also has testified regarding hidden assets research, white collar
crime/fraud, embezzlement, factual due diligence, internal theft and
investigative standards of care.
To help avoid negligent hiring, Lawson suggests the following:
1. Know the rules. The FCRA and FACTA contain crucial
information for anyone hiring. For example, "you must always tell your applicant
that you are running a background check and you must get written consent to do
so. The applicant must also receive a copy of the report within three days
whether or not the state law requires it," Lawson said.
2. Get positive candidate identification. Lawson also said it
is critical to verify the applicant's name, including akas and aliases, social
security numbers as well as dig up a complete address history and confirmation
of date of birth. "Better to confirm the applicant is who they say they are or
you may be opening yourself up to a variety of possibilities."
3. Know your applicant's responsibility attitudes. Lawson
says, "use common sense when reviewing financial records including credit
reports and driving history. How a person handles this part of their lives tells
you a lot about how their responsibility will translate into the workplace."
4. Check criminal history in the courts, not online databases.
The FACTA/FCRA allows reporting of felonies and misdemeanors back seven years.
"With this kind of search, knowledge is power so be sure to use a certified
consumer reporting agency and not an online database," he said. "Databases are
often out of date and incomplete." He added businesses should include a national
sex offender registry and terrorist watch list checks.
5. Determine other screening options. "Each applicant may
require different background checks depending on their employment
classification," Lawson said. "Know everything necessary to assure the applicant
will fit into your organization including drug screening, I-9 verification
(immigration), personality testing, and reference checks. You should always
verify education and previous employment."
Founded in 1980, APSCREEN is based in Rancho Santa Margarita,
California and is the originator of the factual employment-screening concept.
APSCREEN provides nationwide coverage for businesses seeking the highest
caliber, most comprehensive background checks for pre-employment screening.
Thomas Lawson, CEO of APSCREEN and a Certified Fraud Examiner, authored the
Pre-Employment Screening series, published in The Complete Workplace Violence
Prevention Manual, which is used as the gold standard in Best Hiring Practices.
APSCREEN also offers tenant screening and employee locate services. More
information is available by calling toll-free (800) 277-2733 or register online
