Recruitment row: Nurses create ruckus
NURSES created a ruckus at the Health Directorate here on Monday. They were
protesting against alleged irregularities in the recruitment. They ransacked the
Director, Medical Care office and gheraoed the DG, Medical Health and Family
Welfare office. Later, the Health Department officials called police to control
the rampaging nurses. The nurses said that the Allahabad High Court had directed
the Health Department to recruit 850 nurses. The Health Department issued an
advertisement for the same and they were called for interview. But on Saturday
when the results were declared to their amazement the name of only 513 nurses
figured in the list. (Hindustan

ads
Dell International Services, India, has hired RK Swamy/BBDO, Bangalore, for its
recruitment ads. There were four other agencies in the fray for this business.
This IT company spends around Rs 5-6 crore for its recruitment ads. It is learnt
that Dell will recruit employees aggressively for its Indian operations and
almost double its strength from the current 12,000 employees to over 20,000 by
next year. Besides, working on the recruitment ads, the mandate for the agency
will be to promote Dell as an employee-friendly company. For this, the agency
will launch full-fledged campaigns. (agencyfaqs!)

21st Century Business: Outsourcing it: what it means for firms
Last week I acknowledged that businesses in Northern Ireland could be facing a
skills gap within their IT departments. A very serious issue, one would assume,
in the context of technology now being critical to the future of all
organisations as a driver of change and innovation. But as an increasing number
of local companies become global players with great ease through 'outsourcing'
much of their IT systems, the actual importance of any appearing skills gap must
be questioned. (Belfast

Industry argues face-to-face beats e-recruitment
Face-to-face recruitment emerged the recruitment form of choice over
e-recruitment in a light-hearted debate last Tuesday between representatives of
both sides of the industry. Arguing on the side of face-to-face, Charles
Ashworth, managing director of Brook Street Bureau, contended that the "scratch
and sniff" test in dealing with candidates in person -- getting a sense of the
person's attitude and fitness for the organisation -- cannot be replicated
online. (Recruiting

showcase a student's work-related experiences and skills," said Mark

Deeper Still:
NO DECLINE IN LONG-TERM EMPLOYMENT
For some years it has been reported that employees in the United States
experienced widespread, substantial declines in job security or stability over
the past several decades. However, new data indicates that there is little
empirical evidence to support this claim, says Ann Huff Stevens in a National
Bureau of Economic Research Working Paper.
Using survey data of men from the period 1969-2002, Stevens
finds:
In 1969 the average tenure for men in the job they held for
the longest period during their careers was 21.9 years; in 2002, the comparable
figure was 21.4 years, not much different.
Just more than half of men ending their careers in 1969 had been with a single
employer for at least 20 years; the same was true in 2002.
Around a quarter of those men retiring anytime in the 1969-2002 period had
stayed with a single employer for 30 or more years.
Looking at the data in more detail, Stevens also found that educated men tend to
have longer tenure than less-educated men:
The average tenure in the job held longest for those with less
than 12 years of completed education was about 21 years in 1969, and 18.6 years
in 2002.
Tenure for men with 12 or more years of education stood at 22.4 years in 1969
and 22.05 in 2002.
Further, non-whites have an average tenure below the comparable measures for
white men.
The findings for the most recent years reflect the career outcomes for the
generation of men approaching retirement age in 2002. Whether this level of
stability will apply to subsequent generations of men depends on the continued
evolution of job retention rates, says Stevens. Only with relatively
long-lasting reductions in job retention rates will individuals experience
corresponding reductions in completed tenure on their longest jobs.
