Reveille and Hyperbole:
Indian nationals are concerned that foreign companies using their talent are causing a "Brain Drain" impeding their own domestic products' time-to-market. As U.S. businesses face the impending shortage of 10 million skilled laborers by 2012, the importance of sourcing and managing
talent is accelerating. Axiome's white paper, "Combining HR and Supply Chain: Top Five Ways to Drive Bottom-Line Contributions," will help executives gain a
competitive-edge in acquiring and managing contingent labor and global third-party services.
The NEC Group comprises five West Midlands venues - The NEC, NEC arena, ICC, Symphony Hall and The NIA - which play host to hundreds of exhibitions, concerts and conventions every year and attract five million visitors from across the world. As part of a comprehensive group-wide
project to integrate key support systems and equip the organisation with the tools it needs to be competitive in a tough marketplace, the NEC Group has signed a deal worth £350,000 with Midland HR to develop an integrated HR and payroll system implemented
over a phased two-year period, cumulating in new self-service, recruitment and learning and development functions for the Group.
According to a research report by Jobscience, more than 50 percent of hospitals end up dissatisfied with their applicant tracking system (ATS) within the first year of implementation. In stark contrast to this disturbing industry trend, Jobscience reports extremely high levels of customer
satisfaction. Evidence of the company's success keeping customers satisfied is on display in dozens of customer testimonials from hospital recruiting professional available on the web at http://www.jobscience.net. Talent Technology Corporation (TTC) today announced it has completed its acquisition of the assets of
MagnaWare, a provider of intelligent recruiting solutions targeted to users of ERP-based human capital management (HCM) systems. for the applicant data management and resume processing requirements of ERP-based HCM systems; notably for those clients of Oracle and PeopleSoft that require upgrades to their current Mohomine technology or are considering the addition of resume processing solutions to their HCM deployment.
Taleo Corporation ( TLEO) , the leading provider of on demand talent management solutions, today announced preliminary financial results for its second quarter, ended June 30, 2006. Based on preliminary financial data, the company expects
total revenue to be in the range of $23.2 million to $23.4 million, representing greater than 20% year-over-year revenue growth. Taleo added 113 new customers during the quarter, a record high in the company's history. New customers included 18 new enterprise customers, compared with 12 enterprise customers
in the prior quarter.
Despite increases in 401(k) plan participation, many employees are financially unprepared for retirement, according to the 2005-2006 Annual 401(k) Benchmarking Survey, conducted by Deloitte Consulting LLP (Deloitte Consulting), the
International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans and the International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists. The survey also uncovered notable spikes in time-based lifestyle funds, auto-enrollment and step-up programs as
respondents reveal numerous changes in plan design to help improve ease of use, flexibility and versatility for employees. The 830 participating plan sponsors nationwide revealed that plans with more than 70 percent participation by eligible employees rose to 67 percent versus 63 percent from last year's
survey. The leading performance solutions and leadership development company, Interaction Associates (IA), is partnering with HR.com to sponsor unique best-practices seminars at the most exclusive meeting of HR professionals in the country — the

HR pros say top concern is employee retention
More than two-thirds of human resource professionals feel that failing to attract and retain workers is the biggest threat to bottom-line profitability, according to a survey by Oklahoma City-based Express Personnel Services, an international staffing and human resource. As the economy continues to grow
and Baby Boomers retire, companies are facing stiffer competition for top talent. (GlobeandMail)

HR managers fear draft labor law
HUMAN resource managers spent a good part of a forum in the city yesterday debating the pros and cons of a draft labor law that will make it tougher to fire employees and push up costs. The draft law has been at the center of controversy since it was published for public comment in March. The government has
received nearly 200,000 comments on the draft, the second most for any legislation in Chinese history. About 60 percent of the comments came from employers, most of whom have concerns about the law. Many employees have also made suggestions for changes to the law, which is expected to be enacted next year.
"The new labor law will probably increase companies' labor cost in short term and crush the current employer-dominant human resources management model," Chang Kai, the draft's chief writer, said at the annual 51job Human Resources Forum held in the city yesterday. (ShanghaiDaily)

Biometric spoofing: New technology, new crime
Biometric security systems are becoming more popular as a high-tech way to protect financial and other personal information - through fingerprinting, iris scans and facial recognition - so you can bet that thieves and fraudsters are working hard to find ways of cracking them. According to Bori Toth, who is
biometric research and advisory lead at Deloitte & Touche, biometric spoofing is a growing concern. (Tech Digest)

Manpower dearth may trip Pantaloon: Report
Pantaloon Retail India Ltd (PRIL) has set lofty growth targets for itself, but execution of these targets may be jeopardised by a shortage of manpower, a research report issued by Deutsche Bank AG says. The July 2006 report says that PRIL's planned expansion to 30 million square feet (mn.sq.ft) of retail
space by 2010 target would need around 200,000 employees while its current workforce strength is around 13,000. "While PRIL has signed up the floor space, investments into processes are behind the curve, it seems", says the report. (Business

'We have too many foreign workers'
OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN on Labour Ruddy Spencer has dismissed the Government's claim there were not enough locally-trained workers to fill job vacancies on some construction sites in the hotel industry. Mr. Spencer, who was making his contribution to the 2006/2007 Sectoral Debate in Gordon House on Wednesday,
rejected the explanation provided earlier this month by Labour and Social Security Minister Derrick Kellier, "We are very concerned in what appears to be the 'Asianisation' of the Jamaican labour force, especially on construction sites, both public and private," noted Spencer. (Jamaica

Manufacturing HR bosses slam skills agencies for failing to deliver the goods
Manufacturing industry HR chiefs have rounded on the government agencies set up to solve the sector's skills problems, condemning them as "a waste of time" and "of no use". At a manufacturing skills summit in Oxford on Wednesday, a panel of senior HR directors from motor parts company Unipart, industrial
equipment firm JCB, consumer goods multi-national Nestle and glass industry giant St Gobain turned on bodies such as the Learning and Skills Council and other industry-specific sector skills councils. The HR directors variously described the agencies as "bureaucratic", "over-complicated", "a waste of time"
and having "nothing to offer". (PersonnelToday)

Prevention of "big shot" misbehavior is critical, but HR can't do it alone
What can HR professionals do when it is the "big shots" in the organization—senior executives, top producers, long-term "untouchables" or brilliant professionals—whose behavior does not follow policy or ethics codes or, even worse, actually may violate the law? Judging by the robust attendance at the
"Teaching Big Shots to Behave" session at this year's SHRM National Conference, the problem is not isolated. Attorney Stephen M. Paskoff, a well-known presenter, told attendees the consequences of uncontrolled big shot behavior can be devastating for customers, coworkers, and the organization itself, but all
too often the big shot doesn't bear the brunt of those consequences. Prevention is critical but if HR doesn't have allies at top levels of the organization willing to enforce behavioral standards, HR alone can't change big shot behavior. (CCH)

Student's Choice: Best Recruiters Named in WetFeet's 8th Annual Student Survey
McKinsey, BCG and Bain lead top 10.
WetFeet, Inc. released the results of its 8th annual student survey, in which 3,055 undergrads and MBA's at top-tier schools weigh in on how they were recruited by employers during the Spring 2006 recruiting cycle.
Students were asked which companies actively recruited them, how they view prospective employers, how they determine which to include on their short list, and which recruiting tactics were most effective.
Among the more than 1,100 employers that actively competed for these candidates, students rated these as being the most effective recruiters:
1. McKinsey & Co.
2. The Boston Consulting Group
3. Bain & Co.
4. Deloitte & Touche
5. Lehman Brothers
6. Goldman Sachs
7. Target
8. Microsoft
9. JP Morgan Chase
10. Booz Allen Hamilton
New to the top 10 list this year are Target, Microsoft and Deloitte & Touche. Companies that fell out of the top 10 include Citigroup, Johnson & Johnson and Kraft. Students said the top recruiters had great campus information sessions, sent a large number of impressive representatives to
campus, treated candidates with respect, and had a strong word-of-mouth reputation.
"This shows that job offers, salaries and employer prestige can only carry a company so far," said Steve Pollock, president of WetFeet and leader of the research and consulting practice. "The personal interactions candidates have during the recruiting experience greatly impact where these
top candidates are choosing to work."
Other findings in the 160-page report include:
- The average number of job offers received by undergraduates and MBAs increased for the fourth straight year, while the number of companies students are actually applying to has decreased.
- Compensation expectations and offers received continue to increase with 71% of students saying they have increased their expectations from a year ago.
- Confidence continues to rise as 86% of students surveyed said they were confident they would find a job they wanted.
In addition to the comprehensive main student survey, WetFeet also released three focused reports covering students pursuing jobs in the technology, financial services and consumer products/pharmaceuticals industries. Each report is available now at www.wetfeetresearch.com.
