Dr. Gayle Porter, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Management at
the Rutgers University School of Business in Camden, NJ, gained extensive media
coverage recently with her prediction that employees will start suing companies
for grinding work schedules that compel them to remain tethered to their
Blackberries and cell phones 24/7. Dr. Porter argues that the relentless pace of
technology-enhanced work environments can create tech addicts who may eventually
blame their employers for destroying their personal lives (similar in nature to
the lawsuits against fast food chains for pitching unhealthy foods). She notes
the proliferation of terms such as "CrackBerry" to refer to the wireless
Blackberry device represent some acknowledgment, albeit lighthearted for now,
that many people are out of control with using these devices. See media coverage
of Dr. Porter's research in

Last week Gerry Crispin, co-founder of CareerXroads, returned to the New Orleans area to
investigate employment issues. Last year, a few weeks after Hurricane Katrina,
Gerry hit the road in a Winnebago to tour the area and get a first-hand
perspective on how people and various organizations were handling jobs. This
year's trip was an opportunity to see what has happened in the past 12 months.
Notes Crispin, "I wanted to get past the usual "year-after" sturm and drang and
focus on the ground where people are just trying to get-a-job and where
employers need capable workers. I'm looking for good conversation from people
who've lived it (this last year) at the center and have both a personal
perspective on employment and the ability to tell their own story." He found

Deep Release:
Bucking the Veteran Unemployment Trend, Military Career Expo Offers
Employment Opportunities
Over 1,000 Former Military Personnel to Attend, Interview, Find Jobs at
Southeast Regional Hiring Event Sept. 22nd in Atlanta
One of the biggest worries for a military veteran is whether he or she will
return to the United States and have a civilian job waiting for them. With
250,000 military veterans returning to civilian life annually, that's a whole
lot of worry.
In recent US Department of Labor data, 29 percent of military veterans told
authorities that jobs weren't available in their place of residence and another
16 percent indicated that the employers they've interviewed with don't
understand how the skills acquired in the military translate to the civilian
world.
Enter MilitaryStars. The Sarasota, FL-based company, the nation's largest
military career expo and hiring event business, hosts regional hiring events
throughout the US to connect the nation's military veterans with civilian
employers requiring high quality, committed and hard-working employees. It does
so regionally to offer veterans jobs close to where they live, and it works
diligently to combat the knowledge gap between veterans' acquired skills and
what employers know and recognize on a veteran's resume.
"What we're seeing right now is a disconnect," said MilitaryStars President
Todd Hecht. "Employers throughout the country need good employees. Returning
veterans need quality jobs. In much the same way as the DOL stats indicate,
veterans are having a tough time showing prospective employers their skills and
backgrounds. With our hiring events and face-to-face interaction between
veterans and attending employers, MilitaryStars is bucking this trend, and with
the cost to hire an employee reaching over $6,000 per individual for most
companies, MilitaryStars is offering employers the ability to hire as many
veterans as they want for one low price.
"What we need, however, is for more employers to realize that veterans are
suffering an unemployment gap, and not only is this unfair to the veterans, it's
not smart for business: veterans have skill sets and experiences that few other
employable demographics can claim. They've faced obstacles few civilians have,
and they're returning to a work culture that's favoring other candidates over
them, even with their unsurpassed military training and experience."
Bringing that experience to the interview tables of the region's
military-friendly companies in Atlanta on Friday, September 22nd from noon to
5pm will be hundreds of military veterans from throughout the Southeast Region.
Employers, ranging from Halliburton to Waste Management, from construction firm
Penhall Company to retail giant Sears Holdings Corporation, will all be looking
to acquire the talent that military experience yields.
To attend the military-exclusive hiring event, military job seekers are
encouraged to register online at
www.militarystars.com.
Employers interested in deploying military talent to their business while as the
same time easing the unemployment disparity between military veterans and
civilian counterparts should call 800 775 1415.
About MilitaryStars: The nation's largest military career expo company,
veteran-owned MilitaryStars furthers its mission to assist transitioning
military and veterans in finding civilian jobs via regional career expos
throughout the United States. All services are entirely FREE to military
veterans. Please visit

Personality Assessment & Matching Avoids Interview
Pitfalls by Assessing Applicants' Cultural Fit
The personality assessment methods used by TalentPen, a web-based candidate
collection and matching system, were recently featured in Inc. magazine. The
August issue presented "The New Science of Hiring," a cover article comparing
modern scientific hiring options to older hit-and-miss tactics. Inc. writer
Stephanie Clifford considered personality assessment as a key new alternative to
traditional job interviews.
"A typical interview -- unstructured, rambling, unfocused -- tells the
interviewer almost nothing about job candidates," the article notes, "other than
how they seem during a couple of meetings in a conference room."
"Unfortunately, as the recent Inc. story notes, typical interviews rarely dig
into the kinds of personality qualities that matter most once the candidate
joins your team," explains Michael Sproul, CEO of eBullpen, the developer of
TalentPen. "For instance, what are these people like late at night and under
pressure? Do they work well within a team, or do they prefer working alone?"
TalentPen's talent collector and people-matching system uses personality
profiling, not resumes, to build a candidate database for employers. Candidates
don't apply for a specific job; rather, they create profiles that are added to
expandable talent pools. The system signals a shift in philosophy for both
employers and job seekers, and enables active recruiting
– rather than processing
applicants.
"TalentPen assesses a candidate's personality before they reach the
interview, or even the applicant stage," Sproul adds. "Managers often complain
that a candidate's personality did not match their resume, or even their phone
interview. TalentPen can scientifically avoid these time-consuming and costly
pitfalls."
Unlike job boards such as monster.com, TalentPen collects candidate profiles
and develops private talent networks for companies based on well they match
their corporate culture. In effect, TalentPen takes care of the all-important
first interview before a position is even available.
The system also creates a branded employment site for customers -- then
attracts people to the customer's site, allows them to enter a profile, search
jobs and enter the talent pool.
About eBullpen, LLC
Based in Pleasant Prairie, WI, eBullpen, LLC helps employers and job seekers
alike find better employment matches by putting personality matching up front in
the candidate sourcing process. eBullpen created the TalentPen candidate
collection and matching system to give employers an edge in talent acquisition
and the tools for improving the hire -- not just the hiring process. TalentPen
allows employers to incorporate eBullpen's proven assessment techniques and
technologies into their existing career site or ATS. With either system, the end
result is a streamlined hiring process and a faster placement of qualified
candidates who fit a company's culture.
