Tip: Domain Names
To effectively
use spiders to uncover bits and pieces about a company, you need
a solid grasp of the domain names it uses. That's where Websitez
comes to the rescue. The site allows you to search the universe
of domain names for:
- a keyword
or
- the name
of the company that registered the domain.
For example,
to really understand the potential for recruiting professionals from
the ranks of International Business Machines,
we ran a company name search
using "IBM" as the company. The result? 85 related domain names.
A little
digging through the IBM
core list offered a site for the IBM
Southeast Employees Credit Union. We're tempted to think that
the credit union just might take sponsorship. Notice the graphics
at the bottom of the home page!
In another
search, we used the keyword function to identify domain
names that contain the word unix. It's a perfect way to discover
small pockets of passive candidates nested around professional information.
Websitez
shows you all of the registered domain names and places a checkmark
next the ones with working websites. It's a great way to see who
has registered what. You can gain interesting insight into your
competitors strategies if they involve additional domain names.
With spiders
in hand, finding the "not-so-obvious" parts of company web presences
just got a little easier.
