My Deja News

How do you keep up with the changes? Not all of them are nearly as interesting as the recent revisions to the DejaNews site. We think you'll find My DejaNews particularly useful. Registration for the new service is straightforward and takes just a few seconds

Once registered, you can use My DejaNews as a platform for searching and posting in Newsgroups. The first thing that you should do is to set your preferences (there's a menu item) to have Power Search as the default. The power search feature allows you to define your searches with "Boolean Logic" and enables you to search for specific newsgroups/authors/subjects and dates.

Most search engines have a dictionary of stopwords. These are words that the search engine ignores when you search for them. DejaNews is no exception. Their stopwords are:

A search engine, at least the good ones, is built by spiders and crossreferences all of the occurrences of the words, phrases and html pieces of various web pages.

The two great web directories are:

We'll cover the fantastic improvements on Yahoo over the next couple of weeks. In this column, we'd like to suggest that you develop a familiarity with the Mining Company, Yahoo's most visible and credible competition. In particular, their Business section provides a very focused look at the sorts of sites that attract passive candidates. Rather than providing a deep look at what's available, The Mining Company has "guides" who pick their favorites out of the overwhelming sea of possiblities. For instance, the computer industry section includes a capsule of the days news and feature sections on:

They are in the process of adding a job posting/resume feature to the computer industry section. We assume that it will spread throughout the various industry areas. It will be a uniquely useful place to post jobs. __________
