Intern Bridge Report Sheds Light on Greater Boston's "Brain Drain" Problem

November 18, 2009

Intern Bridge Report Sheds Light on Greater Boston's "Brain Drain" Problem
77% of Massachusetts College Students Desire to Stay in the Commonwealth After Graduation. Affordable Housing, Public Transportation, and Nightlife Push Them Out.

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today, Intern Bridge, a Boston-based college recruiting consulting and research firm, released Ship Out or Hang Out: The Greater Boston Knowledge Retention and Internship Report. The document details reasons Boston area students choose to stay or leave the area after college graduation and are based on the GradFactor Survey, the firm's research instrument implemented on 16 Massachusetts college campuses achieving a response rate of more than 800 local undergraduate students this year.

The report provides detailed recommendations for retaining a greater number of Massachusetts students. "The results of the survey come at a major crossroads for the future of the Massachusetts Knowledge Economy," says Richard Bottner, president and CEO of Intern Bridge. "The message from students is crystal clear. They want to live in Boston but there needs to be specific improvements first. The region needs to foster meaningful and effective internship programs with employers, promote affordability in Massachusetts for recent college graduates including housing and the possibility of tax credits for those who stay, and create a stronger nightlife environment and public transportation system."

Highlights of the report include:
Students who complete an internship are 50% more likely to stay in Massachusetts after graduation. 48% of students who report they will stay in Massachusetts after graduation state they are likely to leave within the next four years.

17% of students who leave the state after graduation move to New York.

Students feel Massachusetts holds the most appeal by providing a multitude of higher education opportunities, long term career prospects, and job opportunities.

More than 1,000 additional data points and recommendations can be found in the report, which can be downloaded free of charge at www.InternBridge.com/workforce.
