The advertising
industry is on
the verge of
being shattered
into a thousand
fragments due to
the knowledge explosion
and the proliferation
of new technologies.
There are no
more grand theories
that hold sway
over the entire
industry.
Michael Strangelove

Advertising is
one of the minor
arts, so don't
be intimidated
by it. Try
not to lose
your sense of
playfulness.
Keep it fun.
Robert Bly

Reality

than
it seems.

The System

It's better to
do a few things
really well than
than to do
a lot of things
badly.
If you can't
make the necessary
commitments of
time and energy
to your
electronic
marketing
efforts
scale back
your plan.

Webmaster, Inc

We were actually looking for the "How To Be A Webmaster" material on Wemaster Magazine's site. (It promises to be a useful discussion). So, we typed www.webmaster.com into our browser and ended up at the home of Webmaster, Inc. It shows you the power of a good domain name.

It was also our good fortune. Webmaster, Inc is a web tools developer with a stream of products including a chat system and a mailing list/ news manager. Give them a look.

Red Herring Magazine

It's long overdue....We've added Red Herring Magazine to our "Hall Of Fame". The print version of the magazine is a must read in the Silicon Valley entrepreneurial community. It focuses on financing and start up trends in our blossoming digital universe.

The Red Herring Website includes:

We particularly enjoyed the business analysis of EarthWeb.

The Little Things

Email can be your greatest tool. But, getting it right is not completely straightforward. Every email handler (Eudora, Netscape, Claris Mail, Internet Explorer) offers you the opportunity to use a "signature". Our mail-baskets overflow with clever signature sayings and illustrations. It seems that basic business sense gets lost in the rush to cleverness.

Your standard business signature should include:

  • Your Name
  • Your Business Address
  • E-mail Address (optional)
  • Web URL
  • Business Phone and Fax Number
Leave the clever sayings alone until you get the little things right.

If The Web Was An Ocean

In the jungle, five miles down a dirt road, next to a lush tropical waterfall, we stood next to a fellow wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with www.bigbook.com.

Our week-long sojourn (without access to the net) was only modestly punctuated by web references. We watched "real" surfers master "real" waves. The websurfing analogy must have been the brainchild of a landlocked theorist. Meanwhile, we snorkled and found a more web-like experience. With special goggles and navigating equipment (flippers), we were able to observe, catalog and participate in a different world. With the right "cookies" (literally), the fish interrupted their activities to play with us. Hours and hours of watching and interacting in this new (to us) medium raised the question: Why isn't it called Web-snorkeling?

Take a look at the Archives. We've indexed all the past issues with topic pointers.
