Lucas Group, a leader in professional recruiting, reports employment in the advertising, marketing and public relations industries is regaining strength with the rise of the economy. "In the wake of 9/11, many marketing budgets were slashed," said Jamie McCann, executive senior partner and advertising recruiter for Lucas Group, Irvine. The U.S. unemployment rate rose to 5.1 percent in September as the economy lost jobs for the first time in over two years due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. In total the U.S. lost 35,000 jobs as the number of unemployed persons increased to 7.7 million. They had been trending down in recent months and remain lower than a year earlier. Retail trade lost 88,000 jobs in September, with declines spread across several component industries. Over the prior 12 months, employment in retail trade had increased by 18,000 per month on average. Employment in the leisure and hospitality industry fell by 80,000 in September, partly due to the hurricane. In September, manufacturing employment was down by 27,000 and has declined by 118,000 over the year. Professional and business services employment rose by 52,000 in September. More than half of the employment increase was in temporary help services (32,000), where hurricane recovery efforts may have boosted hiring. Health care employment continued to grow in September, rising by 37,000.

According to Aberdeen's latest research, competing for talent is long-term concern and short-term business driver of Human Capital Management (HCM) executives across all industries. Focus on growing internal talent, establishing career paths, and succession planning (96%), and building a brand that attracts new employees (89%) are also on the 12-month agenda. Yet best-in-class companies are less concerned about recruiting tomorrow's talent, focusing instead on defining the balance between the level of service and cost of benefits, as well as planning and managing a global workforce.

  • Unemployment has reached a new historic low in the territory. According to unadjusted employment statistics released last week by the Yukon Bureau of Statistics, September had an unemployment rate of 4.2 per cent or 700 people. The statistic shows unemployment is down 1.1 per cent from the month of August and 1.2 per cent from September 2004. A previous unemployment record was set in July at 4.7 per cent or 800 people. The bureau has been monitoring employment statistics since 1992. Despite the smaller number of Yukoners who are classified as unemployed, the employment rate in the territory is also decreasing. September had an employment rate of 73.5 per cent, falling 1.8 per cent from August. (WhitehorseStar)

  • Survey: Worldwide Executives Looking for Change  A survey conducted by Korn-Ferry International finds that more than half of the world's 1,700 executives would change careers if they could. Twenty-one percent say they would be highly likely to make a different choice and 30 percent say they'd be likely to do so. Other responses included, maybe, at 24 percent, unlikely, at 17 percent, and highly unlikely, at 8 percent. (AllHeadlineNews)

  • Battle Of Tech Titans: Oracle Vs. Sap: Smoke, But No Fire  Figuring out who's winning the SAP-Oracle battle in banking platform services doesn't require a scorecard yet. But an umpire might help.  Despite each company's high-profile gambits to siphon away the other's application customer base, and the head-ramming going on in Europe and the Pacific Rim, all's quiet on the North American front in the financial services field. No U.S. banks have taken up Germany-based SAP's "SafePassage" offer to switch from Oracle/PeopleSoft programs to its ERP and NetWeaver solutions. In turn, SAP's nascent presence in the U.S. financial services field (SAP is in 50 of the world's top banks, including Barclays and UBS) leaves few candidates for Oracle to poach with "Off SAP," its offer to transition SAP customers unwilling to pay the upgrade costs of new SAP products. Both programs are "very loud blanks," quips AMR Research's Bill Swanton, "but blanks nonetheless." (BankTechnologyNews)

  • Already facing shrinking circulation and a flat advertising market, the newspaper industry also has been socked with newsprint costs high enough to force some of the nation's largest and best-known papers to change the way they look and feel. Dow Jones & Co., publisher of the Wall Street Journal, said yesterday that the Journal will shrink by lopping three inches off its width. Beginning in January 2007, the front page of the Journal, which is now 15 inches wide, will be 12 inches wide -- an entire column narrower. The depth of the page will stay the same, at 22 3/4 inches. • Direct marketing companies plan to hire more workers this fall than at any time since 2001, according to the latest DM employment survey by Bernhart Associates Executive Search LLC. "The closely watched new hire index is up a full 10 percent compared with summer," said Jerry Bernhart, president of Bernhart Associates, Owatonna, MN, which conducts the quarterly survey. "It's the largest quarter-to-quarter increase we've seen in a year, and we're up 20 percent over last fall." (DMNews)

  • Building human capital in SA  Building Human Capital: South African Perspectives is aimed at: South African managers seeking practical solutions to sometimes uniquely South African challenges in people management and human resources strategy. It contains the view of South African line managers, human resources managers, academics, consultants and practitioners together with some real-life case studies of how our own South African companies have tackled some of the tough challenges.  It will provide new insights, inspiration and practical tools to improve the ability to grow the human capital that organisations need to succeed in the 21st century.

The editors have chosen five major themes for this book.

    • A discussion about the nature of landscape within which HR needs to position itself, including some interviews with a number of leading thinkers on the subject.
    • The key issue of how to measure the value of HR is explored.
    • Then key issues on the HR agenda are addressed.
    • A number of interesting case studies of HR in action.
    • And the future of the HR function as a profession in South Africa is put under the spotlight.

UK:

  • Are headhunters heading for the exit? ... Highly expensive executive search companies could be in danger of pricing themselves out of the market place, says Colin Cottell  Companies have traditionally turned to the executive search industry as a way of filling senior positions. But many headhunters could face an uncertain future, if firms follow the example of two leading British companies.  The right person for the job: headhunters are being used less in recruitment for senior positions  Philip Horn, head of resourcing for Asda in the UK, says the supermarket chain is increasingly turning its back on headhunters in favour of external research companies because they are so much cheaper. Horn says: "The cost of using an executive search company to fill a senior director's position with an annual salary of £150,000 is £45,000. But using a researcher who charges £500 a day costs between £3,000 and £6,000." (Telegraph)

  • Scottish unemployment levels fall to record low ...UNEMPLOYMENT in Scotland has fallen to a new record quarterly low, according to official figures issued yesterday.  The number of people in work has also risen to a record high, the figures suggested, and Scottish Secretary Alistair Darling hailed the figures as "very good news for Scotland". There are over 200,000 more people in work than there were in 1997. (Scotsman)

  • Unemployment claims go up in UK  The number of people in work in Britain is at a record high even though more people are claiming unemployment benefits, according to government statistics released on Wednesday.  Figures from the National Statistics Office showed an employment level of 28.76 million in September, the highest total since records began in 1971.  Total unemployment, including people not eligible for benefits, decreased by 7,000 over the quarter but increased by 21,000 over the year to September to 1.42 million, giving the unemployment rate of 4.7 per cent - unchanged from the previous quarter. • MI6 launches recruitment website · Service shuns secrecy to attract diverse newcomers · Boast of 'family' spirit - and squash courts...It may sound the death knell of the traditional recruitment method for British spies, the nod and a wink from Oxbridge tutors. Today the Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6, steps on to the public stage with the launch of a website to attract newcomers from a wider variety of backgrounds. US:

  • A blind eye to gender bias...In August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics discontinued its women worker employment series in the current employment statistics payroll survey. The women worker employment series ensured the most detailed monthly snapshots and long-term trends on the number of women workers in individual industries. The bureau said it discontinued the series because it ''imposed a significant reporting burden" to ask 160,000 businesses representing about 400,000 individual worksites to note gender in their monthly reporting of employment, hours, and earnings of their workers. ''In an increasingly difficult data-collection environment," the bureau says on its website, ''survey response burden is a crucial factor in survey design." The bureau also claimed the women workers series was ''little used." The agency said that ''extensive" data on women in the workplace will still be available in the Current Population Study, the monthly survey of 60,000 households.

  • RehabCare, UMC to address allied health worker shortage RehabCare Group Inc. and the University of Missouri-Columbia plan to hold a symposium to address the shortage of allied health professionals in the industry. The symposium, said to be the first national symposium to focus on the issue, is designed to find solutions to the shortage. It is scheduled for Nov. 1 and 2 at the University of Missouri-Columbia (StLouisBizJournal)

  • A Passive Candidate Finds Work Without Doing Much At All  Pascal Caillon didn't want to conduct a full-fledged job search. Instead, the 35-year-old New Yorker just wanted to know whether there was much demand for his abilities and, with luck, speak with a few employers.  Mr. Caillon is a specialist in the arcane field of finding ways to generate credit-card revenues via cell phones and other new technologies. For nearly nine years, he had worked for Visa International Inc. in this area and, last fall, he thought it was time to move on. (CareerJournal)

  • Vertical Search...Vertical search has become a new phenomenon in technology space with many startups created in the last year or so. In essence, vertical search is a fancy word for search aggregation where search targets at a single area of vertical domain, (ie. job or merchandise) and aggregate data from multiple data sources so that consumer can find information from a single place. This is useful only because google can not find relevant data within a defined space without search context. Long term sustainability against google/yahoo of the world is unclear, but consumer benefit is definitely there for this model to make sense. (Ray Wu's blog)
