What Webmasters Earn August 15, 1997 According to a survey by Network Computing, it looks like the median salary for Webmasters is about $60,000. Not bad change for sloshing some HTML around. Well, it takes a little more then that, but you can read all about it in this exhaustive and fascinating Web/Intranet Manager Salary and Career Survey from Network Computing. Lots of figures and graphs covering everything from salaries, demographics, regional differences in pay, job satisfaction, responsibilities, and career opportunities. Too much good stuff to summarize here. But, basically, if you're in the industry or trying to get in this is mandatory reading.
Tutor 2000 August 14, 1997 Tutor2000 matches tutors and students by utilizing the power of the Internet. The first tutor referral service conducted over the Web, Tutor2000 transforms one-to-one education into an efficient and lucrative business. At Tutor2000, tutors receive a web page to post information about themselves, enabling anyone to read about their professional background, personal style, location, and cost. The web provides Tutor2000 with a global audience which allows tutors from all over the world to post resumes, emphasize specialties, and target an education niche while allowing millions of prospective students to browse through the available tutor listings. Tutors can advertise themselves in a confidential manner by supplying their credentials and e-mail address alone (without their phone number or mailing address). Tutoring can be performed face to face or electronically. Looking for tutors in a particular geographic area to schedule a direct meeting or communicating via e-mail is easy. For example, if a student wants feedback on an essay, he can e-mail it or send it as an attachment to a tutor. The tutor could reply with suggestions on how the piece may be improved. E-mail also provides an "electronic" hard copy that can be saved enabling the student to save the exact explanation from the tutor for future reference. Multiple drafts become a natural result of the medium helping students a long in the process of revision. The tutor and student can also arrange a time to meet at the Tutor2000 tutor chat room to conduct their session in real time on-line. Chatting lets the tutor and student to conduct a private session for as long as they like - regardless of the distance separating them! This is another way that tutoring can be performed electronically. Instructions for using the chat room is also available for first time users.
Colleges & Careers August 13, 1997 The US News Colleges and Careers Center provides advice and information for college entrants. It's a clean and interesting site with four sections:
There's also a "Guide for Parents", a "Loan Center" and a "Personal Organizer". Check this one out!
Searchbase August 12, 1997 SearchBase bills itself as "the outplaced execs total executive recruiters connection" [sic]. Which is quite a mouthful. SearchBase "allows you to be identified by a multitude of criteria at the exact moment when a recruiter is looking for you. SearchBase was designed by our founder, formerly of Heidrick & Struggles, to be an integral part of the retained search process thus ensuring maximum usage by recruiters and exposure for you." As well as a searchable database, the site contains useful career articles, such as "How to Change Careers", "Be More Memorable In Job Interviews", and "Wouldn't It Be Better To Work For The Good Guys?", all of which contain solid - if somewhat quotidian - advice. As the tag-line indicates, SearchBase targets itself at middle to junior executives. Wherein lies the rub. Sign up costs "just $98. That's the same as the cost of postage to 278 recruiters..." Of course, if you don't have - or don't want to spend - $98, you can always list yourself with SkillBANK. You are invited to put yourself in the database of this service from Lapis Software of New Jersey. It is skill-specific, which allows an employer to search for the abilities it requires rather than scan every resume in every category. Better yet, it's free to all users.
Michigan August 11, 1997 Apparently, the state of Michigan (!) is experiencing a jobs boom. The Michigan Jobs Commission (MJC) and Michigan Employment Security Agency (MESA) recently used newspaper ads and the Internet in a multi-state search for workers interested in jobs in Michigan. The four-week advertising campaign netted more than 1,400 resumes. The resumes were faxed in or uploaded to the America's Talent Bank (ATB) Website by jobseekers. Although the campaign is over, Michigan still needs skilled and unskilled workers. Michigan's economy has been booming since the early 1990s. More than a half million jobs have been added to the state's economy and unemployment dropped to a record low of 4.0 percent in May 1997, down from 9.5 percent in May 1991. June's jobless rate held steady at 4.0 but the number of unemployed dropped to a 24-year low. "That's good news but the booming economy also makes it difficult for Michigan businesses to find and keep all of the skilled workers they need," said Doug Stites, acting MESA director. "That's where ATB can help." Jobseekers may visit the ATB Website to post their resumes directly or mail them to: MESA Talent Bank, 7310 Woodward Ave. -- Room 502, Detroit, MI 48202. Businesses can review resumes at Michigan's site on ATB. Businesses will need to go through a simple registration process before they receive identifying information from the resumes.
