The Portfolio July 25, 1997 In his book The Age of Unreason, Charles Handy, a professor at the London School of Economics notes how dramatic changes are transforming business, education, and the nature of work. We can see it in astounding new developments in technology, in the shift in demand from manual to cerebral skills, and in the virtual disappearance of lifelong, full-time jobs. Written in the mid-eighties, Handy predicted the emergence of what he termed "portfolio man", by which he meant an individual with an array of skills which are differently "packaged" depending on the needs of different employers or "clients" This is a useful concept to adopt when you are actively engaged in the "hunt". It involves a constant re-evaluation of the skills you possess in the light of the would-be employer's needs. There is an interesting discussion of this notion in A Hitchhiker's Guide to Job Security, by Tupper Cawsey, Gene Deszca and Maurice Mazerolle. In it, they argue that "the concept of the portfolio career is significant because it provides a new way of viewing our relationship to work. Many of us have the perspective of "job" equals "career". However, if there are no "jobs" it is easy for us to be frozen into inaction. "Rethinking the structuring of work into projects provides much more flexibility to the individual and to the organization, with the possibility of mutual gain. "For example, the individual can earn his/her way into ever increasing skilled contracts, while at the same time organizations can have work done, perhaps even a long term relationship, without the long term commitment."
Physical Therapy July 24, 1997 Styling itself a "community center", PT World is "the premier internet directory for physical therapy and rehabilitation agencies". As we have noted previously, the general field of healthcare is one that is anticipated to grow over the next decade. If you are considering the physically therapeutic aspects of this field as a career option, this site will provide a bounty of information and contacts. Sections of the site deal with news and current articles, links to various state chapters of the Physical Therapy Association, which can be useful sources of networking. The Jobsearch section of the site allows you to search for a job by field, position, city, and/or state. This is an attractive site which appears to fulfill its stated goal, and is a good starting point for actual or would-be Physical Therapists.
Mentoring July 23, 1997 According to Karen H. Bonnell of the University of Southern Indiana, there is a direct relationship between career success and the provision of a mentor. A mentor serves as a teacher, friend, coach, and counselor to a protege and that relationship is tied to positive career outcomes including compensation, promotion, and commitment to one's organization. A survey conducted by Bonnell showed that 62% of broadcast journalists had mentors, and female journalists were more likely to have mentors than men. There are, of course, two sides to the mentoring relationship, and, it seems there are potentially positive advantages for both parties. It's fair to say that most perceptions about mentoring focus on its role in relation to young people who are economically or socially disadvantaged. But, as Bonnell notes, this is by no means the whole story. The Web has myriad resources on mentoring from both sides of the equation. There are links to dozens of sources of information, whether you are relocating to a different part of the country to the going rate for new graduates. Obviously, your value to a particular employer is dependant upon a whole range of factors, from your unique combination of skills and talents to the employer's precise needs. You may wish to consider negotiation as a way of improving the offer or to determine whether or not the offer that is made you fairly reflects your value. Once again, Jobsmart offers a variety of sources on salary negotiation, from those which urge you to being assertive to far more cautionary approaches.
Accounting July 21, 1997 We recently mentioned the general field of Accountancy as being one of the anticipated job-growth sectors over the next decade.
