Company Research (May 30, 1997): Before you go on the next interview, dig in to the facts about your potential employer. These links should get you the bulk of what you need:
(May 29, 1997): The Internet is home to about 50,000 mailing lists on a huge range of subjects. Each list has between 10 and 10,000 subscribers. (Liszt is a searchable index of over 35,000 of them and includes a great introduction to mailing lists). Mailing lists vary significantly in frequency, content, tone and local culture. Essentially, they are all groups (communities) that communicate by sending email through the mailing list software. You send a piece of mail to the mail software and it distributes it to the rest of the group. Joining a mailing list deserves careful consideration before you make the plunge. Simply following all of the traffic through your email box can be a daunting prospect. But, mailing lists are one of the best places to network with other members of your industry. It's possible, over time, to build close relationships with colleagues a (and the occasional recruiter). Yahoo!'s Employment Section (May 28, 1997): With kajillions of regular visitors and a rapidly expanding array of content, you need to make the Yahoo Employment Section a component of your job hunt. The offerings include the following city specific advertising sections:
Career Magazine May 27, 1997 Career Magazine is a comprehensive resource to help you in the "hunt" The front page features abstracts of job-related articles. "Inside" you will find sections on Job Fairs, Relocation, a Career Forum and more. You can submit your resume to a number of specified companies, and even get tickets to Comdex. Amongst the featured articles is one which discusses the "future of work" - and questions whether there will be "jobs" as we know them in the future. And a new section - "Entrepreneurs' Corner" - looks at franchises and other careers in self-employment. This is a clean and easily-navigable site with plenty to explore. Go East, Young Man! May 26, 1997 Price Jamieson is a respected London, UK, based recruiter which specializes in " UK and international job opportunities geared towards Americans seeking employment abroad." The site is well organized and easy to navigate. Categories range from "New Media", "Design" and "Public Relations" to "Health", "Marketing" and "Market Research" A random sampling of a couple of categories yielded a number of interesting positions in locations ranging from Spain to the UK itself to Korea. To register, you can either fill out the online form (don't be intimidated by the English nomenclature for qualifications), or attach your resume to an eMail. We recommend the former method. Following a "weblink" from the Price Jamieson site lead us to Roz, Goldfarb Associates, a recruitment agency based in New York specializing in "design, new media and advertising". This is a spiffy-looking site which acts a liaison between recruiters and candidates in the areas mentioned above. If you have the requisite skills and abilities and are based on the East Coast, this site is definitely worth a look. More Resources
