Modeling May 23, 1997 The convergence of media is creating an insatiable demand for new, original content. And, despite the use of image manipulation technology, there will always be a need for real, live humans to advertise and promote new and existing products. Perhaps you are one of the many hopefuls who are trying to break into modeling as a profession. If so, then NewModels.com is a useful starting point. The organization - which is physically located near Sacramento, CA - acts as a clearing house for new faces and agents and talent scouts. The site provides a showcase for new male, female and child models. For models, NewModels will create a page at their site for you, comprising between three and five photographs and a brief description and contact information. If you don't have access to a scanner, they will scan your shots for $10 each. Their database is searchable by region and by foreign country. There's a useful FAQ about their services, and a "Photographers' Corner" where photographers specify models and locations for current projects. This seems to be well-used, although it's fair to point out that a lot of the assignments are "trades", whereby the model and the photographer "trade" services for portfolio shots. There's also a chat room where hopefuls can swap notes or commiserate... All in all, a useful site which is easily navigable. Equal Opportunity Publications May 22, 1997 Equal Opportunity Publications is aimed at " members of minority groups, women, and people with disabilities." There are two parts to the site. The first is the 'zine "Independent Living Provider", and is "The Sales & Service Magazine for Home Medical Equipment Dealers". Fascinating stuff. The meat of the site, for our purposes, however, lies with "The Career Center For Workforce Diversity For Minorities, Women, & People With Disabilities". There are links to:
The site is a trifle thin on content, but, if you fall into the category of a "minority", this is worth checking out. Resumania May 21, 1997 In terms of the hunt, your resume is your basic document. It functions as a kind of advertising "flyer" and business card in one. There are plenty of resources on the Web to help you create an effective reume. We were rather taken with Resumania. This is a step-by-step reume builder operated by the University of Minnesota Employee Career Enrichment Program. There's a comprehensive FAQ, and a six-step program, which ranges from asking the purpose of a resume to examples of what they believe to be particulaly good resumes. Resumix has plenty of good advice on creating electronic resumes, including tips from Joyce Lain Kennedy. Resumix itself "...provides advanced Human Skills ManagementTM solutions that enable organizations to identify the most qualified candidates for hire, promotion and reassignment quickly and efficiently." This attractive site not only provides practical advice, but also lists job opportunities within the company. Guaranteed Resumes May 20, 1997 Kevin Donlin of Guaranteed Resumes will write you a resume which is guaranteed to get you a job. He guarantees it. Resume writing runs from $100 and up, while editing an existing resume starts at $70. This is how it works. You go to a section of the site and fill out a detailed Personal Profile. The profile asks you a comprehensive set of questions, including the title of the job you are looking for, all your previous employment, your current and anticipated earnings and so forth. Then you send all this information off to Kevin, and hey, presto! - a few days later you receive a resume. Kevin will even use the data you supply to conduct an Internet search on your behalf for a mere 30 bucks! We're sure that Kevin is a great copywriter and that the end result is aesthetically pleasing. However, the old saw - GIGO - applies. In other words, if you are unsure of the specifics of the position you are seeking, the greatest copywriter in the world can't help you. Finding the position that's right for you involves painstaking research and total focus upon your goals. That's the hard part. Still, if you know what you want, but lack the necessary skills to convert your resume into persuasive copy, then Guaranteed Resumes is worth a look. JOBTRAK May 19, 1997 JOBTRAK claims to be "... the #1 source for jobs on the internet. Over 280,000 employers have used JOBTRAK to target their full-time jobs, part-time jobs, temporary jobs and internships toward college students and alumni. " And who are we to argue? The site has six sections: About JOBTRAK, Resumes, Job Search Tips, Job Listings, Top Recruiters and a Guide to Graduate Schools. The Job Listings require that you be a current student or alumni of one of an extensive list of schools. (We used "Hendrix College" and the password "studev".) Once inside, you can search the relevant database by
