About Work

(March 7, 1997): Take a look at About Work. The expansive site offers something usually missing from a job hunt...conversation. While the Web is great for scanning known oportunities, About Work is a setting that just might allow you to imagine a new possibility.

SOHO

(March 6, 1997): A recent survey claimed that 47 Million people work in Small Office /Home Office (SOHO) businesses. The SOHO explosion, fueled by early 90's downsizing is expected to hit 60 Million participants by the year 2000. Driven by the need for independence, increased family time, self-generated security or the love of 1099s, half of the workforce will be in these small settings. It's a driving force behind the explosion in temporary and contract positions.

Hiring a SOHO employee (or contracting with a SOHO company)is currently a hit or miss proposition for companies with work. With a few exceptions (Net-Temps, Contract Employment Weekly and DICE), this increasingly vast candidate pool is ill served. Temporary firms, in an explosive growth mode, still struggle with the problem of harnessing the growing resource.

Often working alone and isolated, the SOHO labor force needs several things:

    • Social Structure (the equivalent of the "water cooler")
    • Centralized services (administration, printing, contracting, and accounting)
    • Market access (bid opportunities and marketing assistance)
    • Continuing education

The International Homeworkers Association (IHA) is nearly the only organization with a clear market focus on the needs of these workers. IHA provides a newsletter, discussion forums, resume banks, and job postings targeted at the market.

It may be garish, but it's the only game in town.

Job Hunting Inspiration

(March 5, 1997): Staying motivated (dodging depression) during a job search is not always an easy task. It would be great if all you had to do was look around on the Web, find a cool job and get hired. But, no amount of automation is likely to make it that easy.

That leaves an opening for services like Empowerment Now!, an interesting new company providing motivational home pages. Depression and frustration are (often) the unspoken foundation of a job hunt. While there are a variety of ways to treat the problem, the feelings are an situational (situational depression means it's a depressing situation). While we've heard stories of Job Hunters using Prozac, the more traditional approach involves focus discipline and detailed attention to your purpose.

For no apparent charge, Empowerment Now! will provide you with a "launch page" that includes daily inspirational (non-religious) quotations, links to your favorite site and daily calendar reminders. It's a great idea that will be useful for some Job Hunters.

You'll Want To Bookmark This Marketing Jobs

(March 3, 1997): The future of job hunting might look like Marketing Classifieds. The site, focused squarely on the needs of jobhunters in Marketing, offers a set of links to marketing and employment resources, job listings and a place to submit your resume. Easy to use, the site should be a stopping point for anyone looking for work in Marketing.
