All 4 One Searching

(February 22, 1997): It's a simple idea....provide results from 4 search engines in a single web page. The all4one Search Machine accomplishes the task gracefully. Bookmark it and expand your search effectiveness.

Resume Carpet Bombing

(February 21, 1997): If you're going to use email to submit your resume, you might as well get serious about bulk mailing. As an experiment, you might want to try the dreadful service offered by the Atlantic Alliance called ResumailTM. If you can tolerate wading through their mind-numbing interface, the service allows you to simultaneously submit your resume to over 240 San Francisco Bay Area Recruiting companies.

Initially, we worried about the pros and cons of bulk resume submittal. The more we thought and looked, the more it became obvious that sending large volumes of your resume out by email is a survival tactic, not a moral issue. Stay tuned to this channel and we'll keep you posted on the best and newest versions of these services.

These are the early days of Internet based job hunting. Given the inherent difficulties in using ResumailTM, we doubt that it is long for the world. But, like Medusa, when one of these services dies off, two will spring up to take their place. While it's open, take advantage of the opportunity to get your resume distributed to another block of places. Bombs away!

For a much more elegant implementation of the same idea, be sure to visit our long time favorite Resume Drop

How To Waste Time

(February 20, 1997): The Web offers no shortage of distraction. Wasting your own time is your business and a significant part of the Web learning curve. Wasting other people's time is a different matter.

It's very easy to send your resume as an attachment to a piece of email. These days, most emailers support the option. But, viruses embedded in attached documents are causing trouble all over the net. It's better to include your resume in the actual email.

By sending attachments, you risk being seen as the person responsible for infecting the hard drive of your target. At the very least, include a statement that says: I've scanned the attached document for viruses using (Software Product X).

Moving On

Poetry In Motion

(February 17, 1997): As a medium, the web is very personal and intrusive. It shouts and dances where paper based delivery just sits and simmers. Authenticity, the sense that web material emerges in a direct communication between two people, is a very rare commodity in Recruiting Websites.

Electra, the author behind JobSmart.org, is somehow able to create this sense of intimacy as she describes the ins and outs of Net based job hunting.

Kevin Johansen, the entrepreneurial energy that powers 4Work.com is trying an interestingly risky strategy to create Autheticity. In a regular column, highlighted on the 4Work home page, Johansen stretches out and philosophizes. About life, about work, about community. While we're not sure about its effectiveness, we are sure that you won't find anything even remotely close in the rest of the recruiting world. The experiment has been running for the past six weeks.

Recently, Johansen launched the 4work.com Poetry Corner with the following missive:

I was once a bad poet. Probably still am. Though I really liked the lifestyle, I didn't write much that was important. Then my overhead got the best of me (Wimmen!), and I got into business by default. I do like it, though, and I think it important that people be exposed to it. Consequently, I have created some space @4work.com to record the lyrics of this song of change.

So click-thru to the 4work.com Poetry Corner, and enjoy.

The gambit may not be as silly as it initially appears. The web creates an opportunity to humanize job hunting. It creates the possibility that vocation (careers embued with passion) will find renewed emphasis. If the sexist cracks were toned down a bit, Johansen's Poetry Corner could evolve into a very interesting watering hole for job hunters.
