Interviewing
December 27, 1996 --- When all is said and done, the purpose of a resume is to get you an interview. Anything that distracts from that goal is a negative; anything that moves you closer is a positive. When you review your credentials package, ask an unbiased peson whether or not they'd be interested in talking to someone like this.

As far as interviewing goes, there are few moments that generate as much fear. The web is chock full of advice that preys on these fears. From the lame Interviewing Tips for Job Seekers to the academic Employment Interviewing Bibliography. A simple search on Employment Interviewing will give you about 9,000 places to look for advice and consolation.

The bottom line? Everyone gets nervous when preparing for an employment interview. Knowing as much as you can about the company; making comfortable conversation and solid eye contact; and relaxing while you're in the process are the basic pieces of making your interview a success. Being on time is a good start.

WinWay Corporation provides a delicious article on Handling Illegal Interview Questions that's worth a quick scan.

We're currently suggesting that you don't include your resume as an attachment to email. Many of your intended recipients are like us and more or less trash attachments without looking at them. Don't ask your audience to do extra work for you.

Equity Compensation (Being Paid with Stock)
December 26, 1996 --- SAIC (Science Applications International Corp.) is an employee owned consulting firm specializing in a broad range of technologies from energy to computer science. They offer a very large range of employment opportunities on the site but the most interesting feature is their Guide to Equity Compensation

These days, many firms offer some form of "equity participation" as a part of the overall compensation package. The SAIC guide is a thorough review of the options. It's worth a solid scan and then you should bookmark it for use during your salary negotiations.

Old Favorites 2
December 24, 1996 --- It must be greatest hits week on First Steps In The Hunt. Here's another:
Old Favorites 1
December 23, 1996 --- It's hard to believe that there's such a thing as old favorites on the web. But, we've got a couple.
    • After you've got a working email resume, stop by Extreme Resume Drop. They offer a service that allows you to ship your resume to 200 companies at the push of a button. We tend to think of corporate resumes as a landscape that has a hole where your resume should be. Increasingly, hiring decisions only turn into advertising once the internal database has been "mined". We think it's important that you get your credentials into as many hands as possible.
