Personality Testing: Frame This

December 13, 1996 --- Hokey. That's the easiest way to describe the look and feel of Match Your Personality Profile To a Career Path. But, if you're in the "What Am I Gonna Do With My Life", the site offers a quick overview of the use of interest and skill assessment inventory tools for career development.

Meanwhile, someone should call 911 and get this guy an emergency tailor.

On a slightly more serious note, if you are in college and thinking about your career, you might want to assume the best from Job Direct and register with them. You've never met a more passionate group. They're going to be useful allies as you position yourself to enter the work world.

I want My MTV

    December 12, 1996 --- Here's today's riddle:

Q: What's 31 feet long, has 15 processors and 6 wheels, and wants to help you find a job?
A: It's the JobDirect JobDrive, and it's coming to your East Coast campus! You already knew that JobDirect was fast, easy, and free -- now find out how we're working to outdo ourselves by making finding a job even easier, faster, and...
Job Direct is a scrappy little job matching service for college students with big ambitions. We bet they're the first to use MTV as a job advertising scheme. And, they have cool little graphics. And, they're going to drive around the country in a bus promoting the site (we're jealous).

But, they require registration before you see the system and don't tell you what they'll do with your data. Seems like they are more interested in finding out about you than they are in helping you find a job. Don't bother.

New Newsgroup Tool

December 11, 1996 --- Newsgroups and mailing lists have become a complete nightmare for daily reading in the job hunt. How do you cope?

You can use a site like Liszt for locating topical mailing lists and newsgroups, but it can be very time consuming to read and monitor these forums on a regular basis. A service like DejaNews is more useful in that it allows you to search mailing list and newsgroup archives for a text string such as your company name. However, you still need to remember to do this on a regular basis.

Reference.com is a new site that combines the best of Liszt and DejaNews and takes the service one step further. In addition to topical and archive searches, registered users can store complicated queries to run at a later date. Queries can also be run automatically at a specified intervals so that each time the search is run, you receive an e-mail message that contains the results found since the last search. This is currently the best way to search the newsgroups for work if you are in a small enough specialty area.

HOLIDAY HUNTING

December 10, 1996 --- Surprisingly, right now is a great time to be in the job market. Sure, it doesn't feel like it. The holiday season can be devastating for anyone. Job hunters are particularly vulnerable to the idea that nothing is going to happen while the office parties are in full swing.

Consider this. Workloads generally ease up and hiring managers are in a more relaxed mode. Now is a greeat time to ramp up your efforts and zero in on the precise person you want to work for. It's actually easier to get attention during December than most other times of the year.

Medieval Self-Assessment

December 09, 1996 --- Soul searching is part and parcel of most job-hunts. We think that the natural self-assessment that comes with a job hunt is, perhaps, the healthiest component of the process. Unfortunately, many of the structured approaches end up being dreary exercises.

Kingdomality offers a nice diversion from the process. The survey asks you to answer a series of questions that result in a profile of your personality in Medieval Terms. It can be illuminating or silly. You'll find it to be an interesting diversion or a recreational excursion. In any case, visit Kingdomality.
