Student Center
November 15, 1996 --- Nested in a research pool that includes profiles of 35,000 companies and very useful descriptions of effective company research, our latest favorite, Student Center places introspection, planning and research at the heart of its career advice. With billions of websites telling you where and how to look for a career, Student Center concentrates on the tougher question: Why. There's no other career site we know of who begins the chore with the eternal question "Who Am I?"
Soul searching is part and parcel of the Job Hunt (if you really succeed, it's part and parcel of work). Fully aware of this, Student Center offers From Here To Eternity, a guide for preparing a career roadmap. It also includes a remarkable set of internship resources (How and Why to get one).
We've barely covered the first section of the Student Center which goes on to offer solid resume tips, advice on changing cities, sample thank you letters, interview practice and much, much more.
Student Center is a very powerful career planning tool. If JobSmart is the best place to figure out How to use the net in a job search, Student Center is the place to figure out Why. They consistently offer the necessary tools for charting a course.
Wow!
Getting Started
November 14, 1996 --- The College of William and Mary has an extraordinary set of tools and pointers in their Career Resource Office. You'll find some things there that you won't find elsewhere.
Internships
November 13, 1996 --- We stumbled across two gems if you're hunting around for internship information. The employment section at boston.com includes a very nice selection of internships including a link to JobSource's significant listing. If you're trying to develop your resume with unpaid or minimally paid work experience, check 'em out. The JobSource material is a laundry list of internship sites while the boston.com material tries to organize the terrain with subject area pointers.
One For My Baby and One More For The Road
November 12, 1996 --- Self assessment is everything in a job hunt. Career Atlas For The Road specializes in offering you the questions you need to ask yourself. Check out:
In the final analysis, the site is an ad for a radio show and book. Tucked in between the hype are several nuggets of wisdom.
Chivas, Again
November 11, 1996 ---
Did you know that Chivas Regal, the "prince of whiskys", sponsors a job mentoring site. It's a gorgeous piece of work that includes a database of recruiters and an amazing array of career option material. We particularly like the "Guide" ( button at the bottom of the screen).
After conducting an interview with you, the guide delivers a tailored set of materials for you to peruse based on your experience, salary and aspirations. It's a unique feature in the cluttered marketplace of job assistance websites. Called "Career Toolbox", the site definitely merits your attention. It even includes a free CD offer with a toll-free number. The CD is an expansion of the resources found online.
