The Art Of Getting Help

October 16, 1996 --- The Network Observer is a massive project undertaken by Phil Agre <pagre@ucsd.edu> of the Department of Communication at the University of California, San Diego. The focus is squarely on the "political" aspects of the net. A tour of the material on the Network Observer

One article in the current issue deserves your attention. The Art of Getting Help describes a fundamental problem that is very relevant to job hunters. Unfortunately, using the Internet can feel like using a computer....you type, it answers. As a result, many industry experts and hiring managers are inundated with unanswerable volumes of mail from complete strangers soliciting assistance. The Art of Getting Help describes a set of principles that, if used, will help you get the help you need.

Who Ya Gonna Call?

October 15, 1996 --- A new, potentially expensive (for you) scam is migrating through the Internet.

You receive a piece of email with a request that you return a phone call to the 809 area code. You return the call. Your bill contains a whopping item for the call.

Job Hunters are particularly vulnerable to this scheme. We've provided a more detailed description of the scam in our archives. Watch out.

Think Globally, Act Locally

October 14, 1996 --- Since most major job listing services organize their material on the basis of "expertise", it can be very difficult to find listings in your home-town. This is particularly true on an international basis. The International Job Search Page goes to some lengths to alleviate the problem. The well organized Website uses frames to organize job sites from around the world by country. With coverage extending to 41 geographic regions and specific countries, The International Job Search Page makes the first question (is there work close to home) easier to answer.
