Jobs Are Hiding From You
SEPTEMBER 18, 1996 --- Job Smart is the place to begin your net based job hunt. Though we're usually loathe to point towards "hidden job market" tutorials, Job Smart's latest offering on the subject maintains their standard of usuability and readability. We like it a lot.

Finding A British Job
SEPTEMBER 13, 1996 --- Top Jobs On The Net slightly overstates their range of job listings. They'd be more precise if they called themselves "Top Jobs In The UK On The Net". Given that very slight slip, if you're looking for a solid source of opportunity in the UK, check them out. We love their design.
Wowie Zowie! Take A Trip To The City
SEPTEMBER 12, 1996 --- Adams Publishing, who focus on books for job hunters, have hit the streets with a remarkable new job-site. Career City is a huge, well designed collection of articles, links and tools for the hunt. We're particularly amazed by the singularly well designed job search interface. With job listings, an employer search database and a Usenet search, the site literally offers over 100,000 job listings on one page.
Caveat Emptor
SEPTEMBER 10, 1996 --- The site opens with a clever graphic declaring "It's a jungle out there". Joblynx is a service that allows jobhunters to register their resumes for $4/month in a database that can be searched by over 2300 actual recruiters. No mention of who or how a recruiter might gain access. We'd bet that someone invested a fair hunk of money in this lame venture. Moral of the story....do your homework before you launch a website. Market research is everything. It will undoubtedly surprise the creators of Joblynx that Recruiter's Online Network provides the same services (and more) for free. Obviously, Joblynx is a case of too much money, too much time and too little sense.
More Cover Letter Tips
SEPTEMBER 09, 1996 --- In email, you have one paragraph to gain the attention of your audience. We can't overempahsize the importance of sending to a specific individual.
- Everything depends on your first sentence. Make it short, powerful and attention grabbing.
- Don't ever send a cover letter without spell checking it first.
- Always send a cover letter. Period. Anything else indicates a lack of interest on your part.
- Your job, with a cover letter, is to make the recipient want to read your resume. This person is probably reviewing hundreds per day. Wow them.
- Understand that for all of your efforts, your cover letter may not be read. It's not an excuse for not sending one.
- A cover letter need not repeat the contents of your resume. Let it reflect your individuality but avoid appearing humorous, ovebearing or cute.
Cover Letter Tips
SEPTEMBER 08, 1996 --- Even emailed resumes need a cover letter. In fact, it may be the most important component of your electronic package.
- Always find an individual to send it to. Begin the body of the letter with his or her name (ie: Dear Mr. Sumser).
- Make it brief and to the point. Keep your sentences short. 12 words per sentence is a good average. 10 is better.
- Have someone check it before you send it. Make sure that they understand it.
- Even in email, follow normal business forms...Begin with the date and the employers name and address.
- With local firms, always suggest that you can be contated by telephone. In the case of out-of-town opportunities, suggest a couple of dates on which you could travel for an interview.
