Job Hunting Nutrition
SEPTEMBER 06, 1996 --- If you've been looking for a job, you've probably been assaulted with some nutritional advice. You won't exactly get that here. But, if you're up late, scavenging the web for work, you might take a moment to find the closest Domino's and order a pizza.
CareerBuilder
SEPTEMBER 05, 1996 ---
Take a look at CareerBuilder, a Washington DC joblisting site that offers a personal search agent. We particularly enjoyed their career Q&A section which included the following tidbits:
- Getting job experience without any.
- Distributing multiple resumes within a company.
- How long to wait before re-applying.
- Salary expectations for "downsized" employees.
- Transitions late in your career.
- How to get past the Salary Question.
- Time required to find a new job.
- Finding part-time and telecommuting jobs.
- Changing jobs without being seen as a "job-hopper"
62 New Career Sites
SEPTEMBER 04, 1996 ---
62 Employment agencies and Recruiters joined the fray during the month of August. We've provided a list of them. Check it out early. When websites are first opened, solid reationships with the Principles are easier to establish.
Iguide: Fun and Job Hunting
First Steps At Burning Man
AUGUST 30, 1996 ---
We're taking a bit of a break over this long weekend. Look for a report from the Burning Man Festival or the Nevada Desert. We'll be back Monday, Tuesday at the latest.
WOMWEB: Career Choice Foundation
AUGUST 29, 1996 --- Still in its infancy, WOMWEB is a collaboration between MS, Working Woman and Working Mother Magazines. Although the career management features are just taking shape, there are a number of resources for women who want to include (or exclude) certain kinds of political bias in their careers. Some of the more interesting features include
There is more than the standard level of politics embedded in the site. We're optimistic that the sheer horsepower behind this project will build it into a major resource for Job Hunters. It's a very nice beginning and has a great deal of potential.
Managing Your Career With Chivas
AUGUST 28, 1996 --- It's a leap into disco-nostalgia. We're old enough to remember business deals cut in bars amidst heaping ashtrays, custom tailored suits and sparkling glasses of expensive whiskies. The bar was an extension of the office and last call was the end of the last meeting. We were sure that those days were gone.
In a combination blast-from-the-past and hip career management, Chivas Regal (the "Prince" of Whiskies) introduces Career Toolbox, a well designed collection of tips for managing your career, negotiating raises and finding a job. Although the booze-career connection seems a touch outdated, the tools available from this site are sage, useful and extremely well presented.
Features include career management, preparation for launching your own business, money management and a nearly free CDRom of career and financial growth management tips. You won't find job listings here, just well prepared strategic advice.
Bloomberg
AUGUST 27, 1996 --- Tucked in the bacwaters of the media pages is a suprisingly influential network run by the people at Bloomberg. It should be no surprise that their bias towards finaincial news is reflected in their online job listing offering: Bloomberg Personal Career Opportunities The site includes a directory of executive search firms and jobs in sales, finance, marketing and management. If your career revolves around the Wall Street Journal or Investor's Business Daily, check here.
The Black Collegian
AUGUST 26, 1996 --- The Black Collegian Online is the electronic version of the 26 year old, national career opportunities magazine. In addition
to the abundance of career planning/job search information, there is commentary by leading African-American writers,
lifestyle/entertainment features, general information on college life, and news of what's happening on college campuses today.
Though the magazine is targeted at a specialty niche, the information contained on the site is very useful to any entry-level job hunter. Features include alphabetical job contact listings (with a contact name at each company), a Directory of Nursing Opportunities and a Directory of Teaching Opportunities. The directories are particularly thorough.
The site's career advice section includes industry reports and solid interview coaching. We think that The Black Collegian Online is one of the more rounded career tools on the net.
Disgruntled
AUGUST 25, 1996 ---
The job hunt can be dreary to consider and worse to execute. Billed as "The Business Magazine for People Who Work For a Living", Disgruntled opens with the following disclaimer:
WARNING: DISGRUNTLED may seem impolite to some readers. These pages contain language that
may be deemed inappropriate for young children and employers. Remember what Grunty says: "Work
is a four letter word."
The magazine itself is an outrageous collection of horror stories and images of work, as bad as it can get. The satire is focused on bosses and the indignities of work. If you want to see how bad it can get, take a look at Disgruntled They do provide links to the following
