How Long Will You Have Your Job?
AUGUST 23, 1996 ---
The times are changing fast. In Silicon Valley, average job tenure hovers somewhere around 18 months. It's hard to call that a job, really. With the sharp increases in uncertainty and insecurity, you may well want to consider starting your own business.
Take a look at the New Entrepreneur. It's full of tasty opportunities for British startup businesses. The insight and advice are global.
Canada
AUGUST 22, 1996 ---
Here are several great starting points for your Canadian Job Hunt:
- ELE - The Electronic Labour Exchange
The Electronic Labour
Exchange links job seekers with potential employers over the Internet.
It was developed by Human Resources Development Canada and Ingenia.
This site is an Ottawa-area pilot, available to anyone with access to
the Web, and also accessible at public access sites, and via dial-up.
- National Graduate Register
The National Graduate Register is an Industry Canada project, similar to the
ELE, in that it seeks to match recent graduate students with jobs. The
National Graduate Register is a national database containing the profiles of
recent post-secondary graduates which can be matched to the job skills
requirements by interested employers.
- Atlantic Canada Careers
Atlantic Canada Careers is a service for individuals seeking employment, and for progressive organizations seeking top-caliber people
- Canadian Job Source
Canadian Job Source is a job-seeker maintained database of all Canadian Recruiters & Human Resources Depts.
- Commonwealth Jobsearch
Commonwealth Jobsearch provides a range of immigration and employment out-placement services
- St. Charles Job Search & Career Information
St. Charles Job Search & Career Information is a collection of links to jobs or career information in Canada.
-
Usenet - can.jobs

Translators R US
AUGUST 21, 1996 ---
Looking for work as a translator? Try Global Translation Alliance. With a simple to use application form, the service goes to great lengths to get out of your way and act as a broker. Looks to us like the level of "interference" is decidedly limited to managing the transaction between buyer and seller. It's translation freelancing without the onerous overheads of most temporary firms.
Another Guru Tells You How To Get A Job
AUGUST 20, 1996 ---
The 10 Best Strategies To Find A Job In 1996 by Dave Dolak is a solid one-page guide for the perplexed. It's nice to have the outline of a generic job hunt is such a compact form. The piece is brought to you by Career Magazine, one of the consistently interesting outposts for Job Hunters on the net.
Planning Your Future --
A Federal Employee's Survival Guide
AUGUST 19, 1996 ---
From the title, you might overlook this expansive resource. Provided, we think, by the Department of Labor, the Federal Employee's Survival Guide includes:
Although it's tailored for Federal Employees, there's a ton of useful material for anyone considering a career change or an abrupt move caused by downsizing.
Career Site
AUGUST 18, 1996 ---
Hey, we really liked this little guy. He's one of the guides on a complex but very interesting job-listing web page called Career Site.
CareerSite has many interactive features available only to registered members, including the
ability to respond electronically to job opportunities as well as to have employers match your
confidential blinded profile and invite you to release your identity and resume. Cuteness doesn't make up for the fact that they require users to register before trying out their services. We can't reccommend them because of this. But, you might enjoy their cute little characters.
