Want A Higher Paying Job? Here Is How…

Let’s be real. The competition for 6-figure executive opportunities is high. Unless you are effectively differentiating yourself from the masses of applicants, what can you do to get that great job? The answer is in positioning yourself as a ‘better-than-average’ candidate. How? Read on.
First, understand how companies recruit executive talent, especially in a tough economy. Employers know that they have a lot of choice as far as applicants are concerned. And what do employers usually see? Tons of self-congratulating contenders with the same pitch that sounds like this: “here are my great accomplishments from years ago for someone else.” The idle chatter is so monotonous and predictable, that most hiring managers don’t give it much attention. A lot of excellent candidates who use this spiel wonder why employers don’t hire them. As a result, uber talented job seekers get rejected and waste time.
Take an example of Aaron. As a senior technology executive with a prominent company, he thought that his amazing credentials would impress employers and that he would get lots of great job offers. And yet, employers had their own assumptions and requirements. Sure, Aaron’s cool credentials were impressive, but what employers were really interested in is how Aaron can help them. In other words, employers wanted to know NOT how good Aaron once was, but how valuable he is actually going to be.
So what did Aaron do to gain leverage in this market? In a phrase – he strategically improved his message. When he relied on a typical, run-of-the-mill resume, he wasted months and got a lot of rejection (this is often the reason why executives don’t get the jobs they want and settle for default options). But, when he effectively conveyed what makes him a CURRENT AND RELEVANT executive who can deliver better results, he got a much better reception from hiring managers.
Aaron realized that employers - other than in his immediate network - had no idea who he was. Therefore, the most important pre-qualifying factor was his explicitly conveyed value proposition. Aaron needed to summarize not only his experience, but also communicate how this experience translated into benefits for new employers. Using a boring ‘list-type resume’ clearly did not accomplish this. Aaron needed to have a better resume that looked like a proposal, not old news. With a properly written resume that DIDN’T look recycled and predictable, Aaron was better equipped than most.
Obviously, a superior resume was not the only thing that was going to get Aaron hired. But, it gave Aaron the logical boost he needed to stay ahead of the curve and get quality interviews for top-paying jobs.
