    Changing Industries

As technology forces industries to change, you may well discover that you need to change your career and move to a new industry. It's a time of intense movement for everyone in the workforce.

One time honored strategy for shifting between industries is moving through a short stint in Publishing. Given the rapid pace of evolution in publishing (caused by the Web and Desktop Publishing), it's easier than ever before to repackage your credentials and find a temporary home in a publishing venture.

IDG publishes the "XXX for Dummies" books and a range of Information technology publications. (They maintain a large list of Job Openings on their website.) As with many other publishers, they offer the opportunity for you to get your feet wet in a new industry (or, you can continue forward in Publishing).

Just Because We're Nagging Doesn't Mean We're Your Mom

If you're doing any part of your job hunt on the Net, chances are you're sitting in front of your computer way too much. Get up, stretch, take a walk, get some exercise, ride a bike.

Here are some choice resources for learning about the mix of nutrition and exercise. Over the long haul, they'll serve you better than the best job you can find. In the short haul, a solid exercise program is liable to make you a better job hunter.

  • Balance....."If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health."

  • Endurance Training Journal...Training, Nutrition, Clinics for endurance atheletes

  • Cool Running .....Events, common running problems, Olympic Running

  • Hiking and Walking Homepage ....Great collection of wandering around resources

  • The Worldguide Health & Fitness Forum ..... Publishers of the CD-ROM product Your Personal Fitness Trainer.

  • Aerobics .....A straightforward guide to aerobic exercise

  • The Abdominal Training FAQ .....not the abdominal Snowman, keeping your tummy firm. Great for desk-sitters.

Be Sure You "Get IT" Before You Do IT

We've somehow gotten on the receiving end of a spate of HTML Resumes sent via email. While a web based resume can be a delight to behold, the text files that create them read like gibberish. When sending out bulk email versions of your credentials, be sure to make sure that you understand what it will look like to your recipient. You may want to read our guidelines for bulk resume distribution.

    Spider Databases

Bookmark Top Jobs -- a spider based employment site. Spiders (or web crawlers) search the net for specific types of information and return an indexed database of results. It's the same principle that allows AltaVista and HotBot to provide searchable indices of the Web as a whole. Reasonably inexpensive to develop, spider technology allows the consolidation of all information in a certain arena to be compiled automatically. Top Jobs is the first spider dirven employment database. They have consolidated over 40,000 job listings into a searchable database

As time passes, these single, independent job indexes wil take a greater place in your job hunt.
