    Compensation Surveys

The web is full of information about how much other people make doing the job you want. Here's our listing of the best information on salary surveys. Generally speaking, Salary Surveys from Espan's Interactive Employment Network is the best place to start.

    Humor Will See You Through

It's Friday again, at the end of a hard week of job searching. Keeping your sense of humor intact is paramount if you're going to navigate your hunt to completion. For your relaxation and enjoyment, we suggest a visit to the Political Correctness Page. Find the true meaning of Political Correctness and search the politically correct search engine.

Changes in the World of Work

Wouldn't it be great if there was a perfect job at a perfect company that paid really well, was both challenging and secure and maximized your potential? Not much chance of that, though one sure way to lengthen your job hunt is by looking for it.

Work is changing rapidly from where we go to what we do. Staying abreast of today's changes is hard enough, but good employment navigation also requires keeping a constant eye on the future evolution of the workplace. That's a central part of the mission of the Brave New Work World. While the site is somewhat incomplete, The New Work News (a small area on the site with collections of press clippings)is a great place to stay abreast of the changes.

    Money, Money, Money

We don't often talk about the financial ins and outs of the job hunt. The web offers several resources for working the salary equation. One hint....a bright young woman was being interviewed in our offices the other day. Her credentials were impeccable and going in to the interview, we were sure that she was going to get a job offer. During the interview, we asked..."What would you want from a company like ours?". She said..."A six figure salary."

While she was clearly qualified, the comment was so off-putting that she ceased being a candidate at the moment the words left her mouth. Timing is everything when discussing salary. We continue to suggest that you establish a relationship with a recruiter. These professionals take the opportunity for tragic error out of the equation by offering you a middle man in the salary negotiation process.

The One Source Group has opened their Website. Featuring an eclectic mix of specialties (therapy, healthcare and data processing), the most interesting feature of the Website is its offer to provide help with visas for international candidates.

    Resumes and Opportunities

The current crop of resume databases have no facilities for managing HTML (Web page) Resumes. At the same time, the number and quality of Web pages doubling as resumes is exploding. For Resume makers, the HTML version is the logical extension of the "Resume as marketing document" school of thought. Simultaneously, resume databases are navigated much more effectively by plain vanilla statements of credentials and accomplishments coupled with key words. Most likely, a solution will emerge that can handle both. But, it's a very good time for resume cvollectors to move slowly on the acquisition of a new resume database system. So, the gap between the two is likely to widen for a while to come.

So, which do you use? We suggest both. Since you have to, more or less, develop a resume for each particular opportunity (once you're in the interview process), you may as well get good at developing them in different forms early-on.

We have a collection of about 100 sample HTML Resumes in the 1st Steps In The Hunt Newsletter. New resumes this week are clearly marked.

Over 50 sites were radically improved or introduced in the past two weeks. Whenever we run this list, we suggest that you persue opportunities in the new sites before you search the rest of the net.
