Motivation March 18, 2002
Some days, unemployment doesn't seem that bad. It's kind of like an unpaid vacation. You're free to manage your days and your time at your own pace. Granted, that money you had squirreled away for the next big-ticket purchase has become your means of survival for the next little while, but sitting at the café at nine in the morning, reading the paper and sipping that espresso while the swarms of the employed rush to work has a certain appeal. Unfortunately, it's a difficult lifestyle to maintain over long periods of time. Sooner or later, after rent and bills and food have taken their toll on your dwindling nest-egg, you're going to have to re-enter the fray, knuckle down, and find work again. One of the keys to getting ready to get back into the workforce is to establish a normal schedule. Commit to going to bed and getting up at reasonable hours. Be dressed and ready to go by the time you used to leave for work. Get back into the rhythm you used to have when you were at your last job. Try to set up at least two interviews a day. The more exposure you get to the process, the better you will come off. Practice makes perfect, and getting over your "stage fright" pays off big when you're negotiating the terms of your next job. Besides, being out of the house and within spitting distance of the working world is a bit more inspiring than sitting around watching "Divorce Court." The interbiznet Bugler
