One of the great sources of contract placement opportunities for job seekers with technical credentials is DICE. You can access their database through a simple interface provided by Jobsight.

Career Resources Take a look at Tripod, a forum for so called genXers (the generation after the baby boomers). As a part of the periodical, Tripod offers services ranging from The Resume Doctor a service that helps candidates write and circulate a resume to The Job Genie where a combination of peers and experts answer career related questions. This issue of Tripod features a pointer to Wet Feet a website by Wet Feet Press who produce "Insider's Guides" for job seekers.

    Job Matching Services
Review the job descriptions in the Usenet newsgroups and be sure to use the relevant terms as Key words in your resumes. The trick to surfacing in a database is having the right Key Words available for matching.

The very best way to search the newsgroups for this type of insight is to do a search on AltaVista. Do two searches.

First, simply enter the title of the position you are seeking. Scan the results. Then, place that same title in quotes (like "Web Development Program Manager"). Check the results of that search. Compare your two sets of answers and adjust your resume to make it fit the categories that you'd like to emerge in if someone was searching for the perfect job for you.

    Blue Ribbon Campaign

Hve you seen this logo in your job search? It's the symbol of the Electronic Frontier Foundation's anti-net-censorship campaign. Sites that share EFF's opposition to the recently passed telecommunications bill are supposed to display this logo (much in the way that AIDS activists display their political position with a red ribbon).

You're probably asking, "What does this have to do with looking for a job on the Net?" Good Question.

The Net isn't simply an informational resource, it's a nexus of culture, politics, community and technology. When you look at a particular job-site, part of what you must do is look for clues about the business' approach to politics and other things. The clues are often subtle, but reading them well will help get your qualifications package seen. While we don't believe that political expression should be tolerated as a form of evaluation criteria, it does help to understand the organozation's inherent political stance when applying for work. Watch for this logo, it will tell you some things about the business behind the website, its values and priorities.

    Resume Distribution
We heavily favor the idea of shipping as many resumes as possible. The idea that there is a "perfect" job out there somewhere is great for authors of job hunting books. It seems not to work well for job hunters, however. Think in terms of thousands of resumes with a 2% "hit rate". In other words, expect 2 (two) responses for every hundred resumes you send out.

The good news is: if you're reading this, you're sitting in front of a machine that will enable you to quickly accomplish the task.

Take a look at our Tools section and imagine sending your credentials to each of the firms listed. It's about 1,200. It's a good start.

    General Note
We've reorganized the Tools and Archives sections. The daily tips are now organized by subject in the Tools area and by date, in weekly batches in the Archives.
