CAREERXROADS
The 1998 Directory to the 500 Best Job, Resume and Career Management Sites on the World Wide Web
Published by MMC Group ($22.95)
ISBN 0-9652239-4-9

Kendall Park, NJ--October 15, 1997-- MMC Group announced today that it was shipping its 1998 third edition of CAREERXROADS to its distributors. The annual directory contains 500 all new reviews of the best the net can offer in job sites, resume databases and career management information. The authors have also collected and edited more than a dozen short articles from some of the nation's most knowledgeable staffing and career experts on the tools and techniques recruiters and job seekers need for success in their respective quests.

The authors, Gerry Crispin & Mark Mehler, share their years of experience in human resources and their passion for online staffing. They show where millions of jobs and resumes can be found among the tens of thousands of places where talented job seekers and Internet-savvy recruiters are connecting. The authors claim that the World Wide Web is becoming a "career cross roads" with more and more corporations and candidates seeking out each other online. Each review in the reference work includes extensive notes and contact information to help employers get in touch with the sites directly. More than a dozen, cross-reference lists help recruiters and job seekers alike target sites with a college hiring emphasis, find the places where programmers, chefs, truck drivers, actors etc, like to hang out or, just get to the places that will list jobs for a fee and for free.

CAREERXROADS is breaking new ground by incorporating a way to stay up-to-date as some jobsites disappear and others take off. Visitors to http://www.careerxroads.com can register for free updates to the directory- even if they haven't purchased it. The updates are sent at least 6 times a year via e-mail. The authors post their bimonthly updates at their website and they also take the time to answer employment questions from individual job seekers and recruiters.

Just as a restaurant guide helps you consider cost, ambiance and style of food when choosing where to go to eat, CAREERXROADS makes sense for discovering career, job and resume guidance for the best places to go where talent and opportunity connect on the Internet.

CAREERXROADS by Gerry Crispin & Mark Mehler can be purchased through most local book stores (ISBN 0-9652239-4-9), and, at more than a dozen online bookstores including: Barnes & Noble Online, Amazon book store, the IEEE's book store (www.ieee.org), and the Society for Human Resource Management's book store (www.shrm.org) or,

CAREERXROADS can be ordered direct through the publishers website

ALERT! Sites to Watch
DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF CONVENIENCE

Imagine that your company has hundreds of openings to distribute to sites on the Internet. Do you invest in the labor to post them one by one ? Do you pay a third party to post them for you for a fee? Do you invest in a technology like Netstart's Teambuilder or use your Resumix, Restrac or other optical scanning database management system to have your openings automatically forwarded to a partner's sites?

-Now, there is a new approach- "Do Nothing"

The above comment is our minimalist description of what's happening with services provided by the Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com), Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com) and recently Classifieds 2000 (www.classifieds2000.com) using technology developed by Junglee Corporation. Bottom line, the Washington Post (or WSJ or Classifieds 2000) will automatically copy ALL the jobs from your company site's jobs pages and reformat them to the Washington Post database. There it is- Do Nothing. Your openings on your site are, for want of a better word "cloned" each week on another site that has the traffic you may want. And yes, these sites will link interested parties back to you.

The developers of this technology twist, Junglee Corporation, are based in Sunnyvale, Calif. Junglee claims its JobCanopy product suite streamlines the recruitment effort by making it quick and easy for employers to get job listings onto various sites. Their Virtual Database (VDB) technology, as they call it, automatically aggregate job posting data from the Internet, corporate intranets, and legacy data sources and delivers the data into highly targeted and structured content databases- i.e. the Washington Post.

Junglee (www.junglee.com) is located at 1250 Oakmead Parkway, Suite 310, Sunnyvale, Calif. 94086. Phone: 408/522-9494. Fax: 408/522-9470.

-Our Take on this Development:

The logic of any newspapers who use this technology to compete with (instead of enhancing) their print products totally escapes us but companies using the Washington Post and/or the Wall Street Journal should seriously consider discussing this with their agencies or, directly with the newspapers. For a flat annual fee, $15-20k you "do nothing" and let these publications "refresh" all of your jobs on their databases every week from the ones you've posted to your site. Do your own ROI, but we believe you should easily pay for the service in the savings you'll have in reduced lineage- probably within 3-6 months.

The Wall Street Journal will assist you even further because it already restricts all the classified ads printed in its Journal from being seen by anyone but subscribers. Therefore, this new service is the only database visible to the job seeking visitors to the WSJ site.

-The Beginning of a Trend Starts Here-

Similar technology has been introduced by CareerCast, an IT focused site which has been developing agreements with companies who...do nothing. For approximately a $4000 annual fee, CareerCast automatically takes IT jobs from your company job pages (each week) and reposts them at the CareerCast site. What Mark and I like about CareerCast is they have a background in recruiting, the ability to push matching opportunities to job seekers via e-mail and partners in print who are sending IT candidates and prospects their way.

CareerCast

CareerCast, Inc.

sales@careercast.com

Suggestion: If you have a favorite site where you prefer posting your positions, start talking to them whether their service will ever reach the "Do Nothing" stage.

-And While We're on the Subject of Convenience... take a look at JobEngine

JOB ENGINE
http://www.jobengine.com
This just announced site is the brainstorm of the folks at I-Search and partner /publisher Ziff-Davis. If you have the time, put on your job seeker hat and pretend you are looking for an IT position. You will be amazed at the speed and sophistication with which you can add your resume to this database. The power and convenience of this model can be found nowhere else. We'll do a full report on JOB ENGINE in the next Update.

Sampling the Wares
HR Job Sites

Mark and I are compiling a special section on HR Job sites from the directory and updates and plan to post it at our web site by the end of the year. There are the obvious sites like shrm.org, trainingnet etc. that every hr pro should know about. Here are a couple more that have become active this year with job postings in the profession:

Benefits Link
http://www.benefitslink.com
David Rhett Baker
Very comprehensive free site with benefit links and articles. Now includes Benefits Jobs Would definitely be a bookmark site for this specialty.

HRIM Mall
http://www.hrimmall.com/html/whatsnew.htm
Jim Morrone - President
PeoplePros, Inc.
Greensboro, NC USA
jim_morrone@hrimmall.com
Monthly updates are pushed out from HRIM MALL to those who want to sign up although you never have to sign in to take advantage of their free services. In September, free services at the HRIM Mall included: 50 Events have been added to the HR Calendar; 24 new Job Openings since last update at The Job Op (56 total Jobs); 6 new Press Releases were added to the "New & Noteworthy" page; 6 HRIS-L summary posts added (17 total Summaries); Folks who register receive automatic e-mail updates when new jobs are added. Simply go to the "Job Op" and enter your e-mail address.

The Jack-O-Lantern Strategy:
One in every window

The announcements this Fall from TMP have become weekly occurrences trumpeting their new partnerships between The Monster Board, their flagship online job and resume database, and AOL, Excite, Microsoft and Yahoo. TMP also owns OCC's management group, MedSearch and Be the Boss. Will most opportunities eventually wind their way to a site whose engine is Monster Board? We think not. In fact the flurry of announcements by both TMP, CareerHub rival CareerMosaic owned by Hodes, are a frenzied realization that the day of the huge generalist site may be nearing an end.

Knock! Knock! Who is there?
PC-TO-PC INTERVIEWS.

In our last Update during the Summer, we described the PC-to-PC network put together by National Career Search (NCS), the owners of CAREER MAGAZINE (http://www.careermag.com, Page 71) and their partners called SEARCHLINC. Their concept allows companies to conduct interviews real time and with almost perfect clarity (24 frames, black and white) without the technical hassles or logistical nightmares by installing turnkey systems. addition, NCS will handle the logistics of arranging to find the nearest site where your long distance applicants can go to connect. This September, we watched while Dell Computer recruiters interviewed nearly two dozen candidates in New York City while safely ensconced in their offices in Dallas, Texas. The interviews were actually held in the midst of an IT trade show at the Javits Center. It looked to us like the booth was getting more action than the nearby job fair. If you haven't seriously looked at this technology and thought it through, you need to do so now.

Internet Surveys
Too much time is wasted discovering the obvious.

Note the Press Release below:

Date: 97-09-11
11:09:03 EDT AOL News
Austin Knight Survey Confirms Internet Has Become Vital College Recruitment Tool

BOSTON, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Austin Knight Inc. announced today that according to a recent survey of college and university admissions officers, 99 percent of colleges have or are in the process of building a website, while 60 percent of the admissions officers already consider the Internet to be a major recruitment tool for prospective students -- a quantum leap considering most of the schools surveyed have had their websites for two years or less.

Our take on this is that Austin Knight's well intentioned survey, like several that other vendors have sponsored this year are simply telling us what we already know. We need more practitioner oriented studies done on growing Internet useage. We want to see sponsors stepping forward who are willing to have some serious survey research conducted by national professional associations regarding Internet staffing use. We would like to see someone support NACE (National Association f Colleges and Employers) to survey their member schools and corporations about the frequency, quality and quantity of Internet usage related to getting a first job. We feel a serious effort by SHRM or their professional emphasis group EMA (Employment Management Association)would also have significant value.

To that end CAREERXROADS will continue to ask professional groups who have us speak to donate our honorarium to the SHRM Foundaton for work related studies.

BENCHMARKING IDEAS
Letter of the month

I work for Equifax Insurance Services in the technical recruiting department and we use an employment site with a twist. The site is called America's Online Help Wanted (http://www.ohw.com). All the jobs listed are in the computer industry and the job seekers have to choose which city they are interested in before they see the jobs for that city. The job seekers are asked to register in that city, with their contact info and skills. Then they can proceed to the jobs, which are separated by category, Programming, database, network, etc.

The site is not a resume warehouse, I have used a bunch of the resume warehouses and you end up contacting mostly people who have already found a new job, anyway, each day Online Help Wanted emails us the registration info on each person who has visited the particular city site.

I always get people who are in the job market now and who want to work in my city. It's pretty cool.

Check it out,
Stan
Equifax
