It's better to
do a few things
really well than
than to do
a lot of things
badly.
If you can't

efforts
scale back
your plan.

Tidbits
(November 26, 1997) Here are some interesting recent discoveries:
  • Metacrawler is a somewhat over-rated search tool. It will simultaneously search a number of search engines and provide you with results. The problem with Metacrawler is that you can not used advanced/boolean searches. So, you're left with a surface skim.

The most interesting feature is a page called Metaspy. If you view this page for a couple of minutes, you'll see the details of searches currently being conducted on Metacrawler. It gives you a sad but accurate view of the subjects that dominate the minds of most web searchers.

  • We like Dogpile a little more. It tries to offer some boolean capabilities but still misses the rich full file features of AltaVista and HotBot. Like Metacrawler, it's an interesting starting point if you want to skim the surface.

  • The ComputerWorld IT Careers Section continues to develop its strong suite of offerings. They have a current article called Paying Through The Nose that identifies key IT skills, the demand for them and very current pay scales. We're particularly fond of their Career Agent which helps IT professionals plan and manage their own career development.

  • Technology companies need different leadership styles at different points. Red Herring magazine presents an interesting article on the subject. The principles apply to a broad variety of recruiting requirements.

  • Lighten up with the useless fact of the day

Apologies

(November 25, 1997) Thanks to the many readers who were kind enough to let us know about the typos in yesterday's short piece. We agree with all of you who noted that typos will drive traffic away from a site. We appreciate those of you who took the time to guess that maintaining the site is a labor of love. Thanks, in particular, to the few who expressed concern.

We spent the early part of this week training a large group of bright recruiting professionals in a Fortune 100 company. Our extensive preparations for the course took us momentarily away from the newsletter.

The Pieces

(November 24, 1997) It seems like we're heading to a clear definition of the key components of a web based recruiting enterprise. From where we sit, they look like:
  • A User Centric Website
  • The Marketing Required To Have People Visit It
  • A constant stream of changing material that makes the traffic want to return
  • A research function that identifies the traffic (preferably by name)
  • Job Postings, with discrete URLs, individually promoted
  • Internal office automation
  • A Decision Making System For Introducing New Resumes Into Applicant Tracking
Can you think of any more?
